Boertien seeks new contract

boertien.jpgWalsall defender Paul Boertien wants his contract talks concluded as quickly as possible so that he can look forward to another season at the Banks’s.

The former Derby left back has been offered a new deal by the club and is keen to remain at Walsall for at least another season.

“It would be nice to get it tied up as soon as possible really from my point of view,” Boertien said.

“All I know is that I’ve been offered a new deal and my agent is speaking to the club about it at the moment.

“I’m just waiting to hear back and I just want it sorted and then I can look forward to the new season.”

And Boertien is optimisitic about Saddlers prospects for the forthcoming campaign.

“I enjoyed it at Walsall last season,” he said.

“Obviously it was disappointing near the end because I got injured and we tailed off in terms of League position, but if we can bring the right players and manager in, I think we’ll do well next year.”

The 29-year-old endured an injury ravaged campaign, which ended with him breaking his toe in April, forcing him to sit out the final six games of the season, but he revealed that he is now almost ready to commence full training again.

“I’ve got another x-ray on the toe this week and hopefully that will give me the all clear and I’ll be able to start running again from then onwards,” he said.

“If the x-ray results are good, Jon will tell me what he wants me to do and he’ll have me in on certain days during the summer to progress the recovery.

“Hopefully, all being well I should be pretty much back to normal and then I’ll need to get my fitness back up, which I’ll do in June before we start back.

“It’s been frustrating not being involved at the end of the season. I was sitting, watching the games, which makes you want to get out onto the pitch and be involved”.

Quick sign him… we may have enough players then to make a 5 a side team.

Umm?……..steady enough player…..nothing exciting but does a job. I would want to see him encouraged to move forward more, but we need a good central defender to partner Gerrard so Paul can do this. I have no problem with Manny Smith, but he needs time and doesn’t need the pressure of being the other main central defender in the team. We saw how youngsters can fold last season. If we are going down the route of developing new/young talent, which I have no problem with, we need to ensure they get time off the pitch as well as on it……..Well done Paul for committing yourself to the club!

Surprised that he is hoping for a new contact but will not know until his agent has finalised discussion with the club. My understanding of that statement is that it is not his decision, but how much his agent can negotiate = how much money his agent can make.
