The last few days have been uncomfortable for Mick McCarthy.
Fans eager to find a scapegoat haven’t had to look too far and, for many, the reason for Wolves’ failure to reach the play-offs is staring them squarely in the face: the manager.
Ten days after the League season ended, McCarthy has had time to reflect and the Molineux gaffer believes as hard as the pill is to swallow at the moment, a stiff dose of reality needs to kick in as the antidote to lingering promotion cravings.
Wolves remain a club saddled by expectations from their glorious past, something which has spawned the ‘Molineux factor’ now readily accepted by the club.
That’s something which has proved difficult for several managers and dozens of players to embrace fully.
McCarthy has taken a slightly different slant and believes the supporters should also be looking back – just under two years to be exact.
The debacle and remnants of the damaging Glenn Hoddle era initially left just six players at a club which had become utterly unloved and rudderless on the pitch, and without the financial clout of previous years off it.
Wolves needed someone to once again embrace the fans and the hardworking culture on which the club’s rich heritage was built on, someone to live and breathe the same air as the supporters.
It was time for change and McCarthy was very much the right man at the right time.
Two years on, the Wolves gaffer remains convinced fans only need to wind the clocks back to July 21, 2006 – the date of his appointment – to see how far the club has come to put the play-off disappointment into perspective.
“We instantly tried to put a brave face on it and tried to be positive,” admitted McCarthy.
“Then I thought ‘let’s have a week and reflect’ and then see what everyone feels.
“But the fact we didn’t get in the play-offs doesn’t tell the whole story of what job’s been done and how the club has been managed over the last two years.
“And if anyone had thought I’d done a bad job they would have told me. I don’t think judgement should be passed on the last day of the season. It’s the two years that have gone on beforehand.
“I should be judged on the players who have gone in and out, the way it’s been managed – everything.
“Yes, we missed out on the play-offs but I think I’ve done a very good job, as have the staff.
“The club runs great from top to bottom. It’s a happy place to be and it’s a great working environment – ask anyone around the place.”
To many, Steve Morgan’s ‘make sure we don’t need the play-offs next time’ comments on the pitch after the Plymouth game heaped more pressure on the manager’s shoulders.
As a PR exercise by the new owner, they were plausible if only to echo the hopes of every Wolves fan anguished at the prospect of more Championship frustration.
But McCarthy reckons Morgan also has some harsh lessons to learn.
“The players will relish it more next season because they understand the league a bit more,” said the boss.
“Steve Morgan will understand it a bit more. Steve has followed Liverpool all his life and been to European Cup finals, but this league is different. I have no problem with Steve. The fans aren’t happy because we haven’t been promoted, but no one wants it more than Steve, Jez or me and we’re working towards getting it right.”
Far from blaming the Wolves faithful for their expectations, McCarthy believes the problem is endemic throughout the game.
Football is said to be a reflection of our wider culture and McCarthy believes the perceived impatience shown by the Molineux masses at his efforts are merely reflective of society’s ‘microwave culture’ of wanting everything instantly.
Even to the extent where current promotion-winning managers have been vilified by their own fans just before celebrating going up. “I was in a car listening to the radio and Nottingham Forest fans were chanting ‘Calderwood out’ and they were booing him,” said McCarthy.
“They said they wanted a new manager because he had taken the club as far as he could. I asked the driver to turn it off.
“Tony Pulis at Stoke had been getting dog’s abuse right up until the Leicester game. (last match of the season, 0-0 draw).”
McCarthy knows what they are going through.
“I believe in what I’m doing and I’ll continue to do that,” he said. “I know people at the club believe in what I’m doing,” he added.

Steve Morgan has not bought our great club to stay in the championship, he has big plans for the club. We as Wolves fans have a lot to be thankful for.
1. A wealthy ambitious chairman
2. The club is solvent, it was even before Steve Morgan took over, so Jez Moxey cant have done to bad.
3. We have a great academy who we hope will continue to produce players like lescott, Keane, Hennessey and Murray.
4. A strong loyal fanbase.
5. Fantastic facilities.
There are not many teams in the championship who can say yes to all of the above.Clubs like Coventry, Leicester, Sheff Wed, Derby all have nearly gone bust or into administration. Look at Blues a club in turmoil.
We’ve had the post mortem with regard to last season, now is the time to look forward. Last season is gone we cant do anything about it.
Mick is going to be our manager whether we like it or not, so lets starting feeling positive about next season and move forward the negativity surrounding last season serves no purpose.
MM has made mistakes lets hope he learns from them and builds a side capable of promotion which at the end of the day is what all Wolves supporters want.
Last season is gone time to move forward and support the team, manager and the club.

Fair play, give this guy ago. I went to most of the home games last year and it was not great and
not as good as his first year incharge. But remember the Hoddle factor, its a far cry from that. Creating trouble is not going to help the team or the club, He will not be going so lets get behind him and see what happens!!!!

We have the necleus of a good young team. Now we need some quality in important positions to bolster the young guns. We need a quick and solid center back, a creative midfied player and one or two players to cover those who think there name is on the team sheet every week. To me it is next season we can judge MM by because lets be honest he has done a fair job since twaddle!

Wether we like it or not mccarthy is here to stay so w ehave got to back the team now. All I want is the signings in early so we can have a good pre-season. I dont want everything left until the last week in August.

Mick is going to be Wolves’ manager next season - please can everybody get over it and be quiet.
If some of our idiot fans had their way, we’d go through managers at a rate of ten per season. Please stop being so fickle. Just get behind the team. If Mick screws it up next season, Morgan will sack him. Let him worry about that.
Mcindoe left because he wanted to leave. Why should we keep players who don’t want to be here??
the fans are not happy and here is why -
Hull City - almost relagated last season, little or no investment in the team - finished 3rd !
Bristol City - newly promoted last season - little or no investment in the team - in play off final!
Crystal Palace - November 3 from bottom - new Manager little or no investment - in the play offs.
Wolves in play offs last season - 4 million pound investment and - not even in the top 6!
It can be done as you can clearly see - the list of Wolves players going out tells the story about our Manager!!
I do not think that Wolves have any chance of being promoted next season with the existing Management in place!!! I could be an OAP by the time we get our act together!!!

If MM once said I got it wrong I for one would be a bit more forgiving. Whether he can pull the rabbit out of the hat will depend on who he signs and whether he is prepared to play attacking football. Why do we play passing back and forth in the middle of the pitch? Who tells or allows the players to deliver this boring stuff. The top clubs have only one aim and that is to go forward and put the ball in the box.
There are questions about his judgement on signings. You cannot have a stable side when most of the players you have bought in are disposed of after a season. We all know that the best players will be off if we fail again next season.
There are questions about personality clashes. Can you believe that MacIndoe scored the winner last night when Mick couln’t get him to hit a barn door. And Freddy - whatever you think, a good manager would not have toyed with and belittled him. Same with Bothroyd who had a footballing brain even if he didn’t always get it right.
OK Mick I have no doubt you are doing your best, whether that will be good enough remains to be seen. We are certainly going to be battling with 10 clubs who will fancy their chances as much as we do so buy some players with character and staying power and skill please. Roll on August, in spite of everything I can’t wait for it all to begin again. C’mon you Wolves.

“Not many clubs in the Championships can say yes to all of the above.” That is true and that is why we should have been promoted almost any season in the last 15 or so. We may not have been the first club in the League to have a millionaire chairman but we were one of the first and what have we achieved. Not a lot. I can fully understand fans being frustrated as we under-achieve every year. I don’t blame Mick or Steve Morgan - they haven’t been here long enough but they need to start producing very soon. How clubs with half our support, no millionaire on the board etc can get promotion and we can’t - I don’t know - well I do really - we have been badly managed at Board and football manager level for years. Let’s just hope that Mick and Morgan use these advantages and start the club moving upwards.
If I were a cynic I could say in answer to your points 1). we’ve had a wealthy ambitious chairman for nearly 20 years 2). is the club solvent because Jez Moxey has run it well financially or because Jach Hayward paid off our debts every year (a bit of both I guess) 3). a good academy producing players for us to sell at a nice profit (there are two ways of looking at every story).

Any clown who was actualy looking forward to the season when he joined would of told you they’d of been happy to be just missing out on the playoffs in two seasons. Fact is you need some perspective. Its all about expectation, why should we be in the top flight, there is no automatic right for us to be. Too much is made of our glorious history (when there was still a wage cap), its doomed generations at this club
And to end all the McIndoe rubbish, the man did very nicely out of signing/leaving wolves. Its called a signing on fee, and thats all he’s ever been after, if BC don’t go up he’ll prob move on again.

Fair comment, however, the way you have treated and managed players this season is appalling if you were in any other business you would have been sacked. As for remembering what you inherited and what you have done, well the club couldn’t have got much lower and itwouldn’t have taken a genius to improve the clubs position.
You have constantly publicy barated and abused the fans of this great club and whats more so have some of your players. 20 - Is it just me, or that seem like the brainless “McCarthy for president” campigners constantly throw in the argument “agree or go somewhere else” like they have some divine right to end every discussion about the clubs future with that comment.
I’ll share a little story, you might relate to:
Years ago, a mighty ship where sailing proudly across the ocean. After a while, some passengers startet noticing the inconsistency of the ships course. Sometimes they would sail left, and all the sudden they would turn right. Then one day they sailed straight at a giant iceberg. Fortunately nothing happened, but the scaring experience made some passengers pay attention to the captain. As they looked upon the bridge where they could see the captain standing, smiling as he waved at the passengers. Some said: “Shouldnt he be responsible and change the course so we sail straight towards the goal, and dont hit icebergs?” But others said: “shut up, he know what he is doing”.
To be honest, the captain did seem to care, but sometimes his decisions to change the course for the better seemed puzzling. One day, he called the crew in, and sacked 7 sailors, that he himself had hired, only to find 7 new sailors in the next harbour, who seemed to know just as little about sailing as the former sailors, and the captain did.
Then, as the ship did a huge turn and started sailing in the wrong direction once again, a larger portion of passengers started to get angry. One said: “we need to get another captain”, and one person shouted at the captain: “You dont know what you are doing”. Angrily the captain shouted back: “I think I do know”.
As more passengers gathered expressing their concern for their beloved ship, a small section of passengers gathered, pointed at the concerned passengers and said: “Well, if you are not happy, feel free to leave”.
Then they forced them into the lifeboats, and as the large group of worried passengers sailed off in the lifeboats, the giant ship sailed on.
But the journey didnt last long - All the sudden, the ship did a huge left turn, and setting a course towards another iceberg, the passengers in the lifeboat could only watch in horror as the ship hit the iceberg, and started to sink.
As the ship went down, they could see something weird. On the bridge, with the proud captain, still trying to hold the course was his small section of faithfull followers, who had always believed he “knew what he was doing”.

A question for all the negative thinkers on this board:
When Hoddle left us with a 5-a-side squad, there was talks that we would be happy to avoid relegation…but no they exceeded expectations and finished 6th…
I think if they had just avoid relegation last season and finished 7th this season everyone would have said MM is doing a great job.
Yes we missed out again but i do believe if we hold on to the current crop of players and keep fit then we’ll be there next season.
if kites wasn’t injured and SEB was bought at the begining of the season i think we would have been there…But that is “if” but what we need to do is back the team and keep the bloody pressure off them…Hull, Bristol City, Crystal Palace all had no pressure and look at the seaon they’ve had.
lets just stop having high expections and putting on pressure on the players. they are only human and they have proven last season without the pressure they can deliver…so just back the lads!

It’s pretty clear that a small number of posters will never forgive MM for missing out on the play-offs. Judging Mick over two years he has done a good job, his mistake was over-performing in the first season and falling below that standard in the second season. Yet if we look at the team we have now it’s a better side, with tremendous potential. If the seasons had been reversed fans would have accepted it more. What is obvious to most supporters is that, apart from the Cardiff game at Molineux (Norwich didn’t count), we laboured in every league and cup game. None of it was pretty to watch and most games had us on the edge of our seats at the end dreading the inevitable equaliser or opponent’s winning goal. If we try to establish cause it was probably down to a mixture of things; lack of strength in depth, bad luck with injuries, signing strikers who failed to perform and Mick’s stubborn streak. I hope that we can bring in our new signings early, escape any pre-season injuries, avoid the sale of any of our talented players and get of to a flying start. The Molineux factor must be affecting the players and is manifested in our poor home performance. We must create an environment which motivates our players, intimidates opposition players and silences their supporters. For the record, I think we will be promoted automatically next season and am willing to nail my flag to the mast. I think Super Mick is still Super Mick but I would also warn Jez, Mick and the players that Wolves fans will not tolerate being criticized by employees of the club for voicing criticism. The reality was that we did under-perform and we were not pretty to watch. On the positive side we have a club that is financially viable with a millionaire owner. (Let’s hope the building industry recovers quickly!!!)

Some of the comments about MM are unfair.Though,I admit that his stubborn way and refusal to admit mistakes do not endear him to many fans. There are two massive reasons Wolves fans feel hard done too:
1/ In their heart of hearts they know that Wolves are an average CCC side, who by finishing 5th and7th in the last 2 years means the have over achieved. The name Wolverhampton Wanderers does not automatically mean you should be in the Prem.
2/Wolves have been overtaken ,like it or not,by Albion. They have won the CCC in an entertaining cavalier fashion. The petty hatred towards Albion has intensified the fact Albion are moving forward, while Wolves stagnate.
MM has an impossible job, while Wolves fans are jealously looking at Albions achievements.Albion are Premier league…get over it,and concentrate on SUPPORTING you own team.

Couple of good signings but as for the rest ! Oh dear ! Ebanks blake was a great signing but wasn’t rocket science to find him as he had already scored 12 goals for plymouth ! All the teams in the play offs have had virtually no money to spend and still got there, as for the slagging off of fans ! That sums him up really ran off down the tunnel after the last game and didn’t appreciate that the fans pay his wages !

I watched the first game Mick was in charge and also the last game of this season. Both were against plymouth. The difference in the performance of The Wolves sides on the two occasions was total. Mick is not a BAD coach or a BAD manager. He is an honest man and because he speaks his mind bluntly he ruffels feathers. Mostly on those who do not have brain enough to see what he is trying to achieve. Stand back, have a real look at the club. I suspect if he had played Eastwood more than he played Steve Ward or Steve Elliot, we may have just got that extra goal, but that’s easy to say now (even if we did say it at the time too!)
He’s built a good team that has not been able to play together enough. (Kightly, Jarvis & SEB) That said it could be argued his team selection has not always been the best (IMO).
Hopefully the lads who went out on loan to gain experience have now done that and will be challenging and playing. Add on to that a fit Mark Davies, potential new signings and culling of the donkeys and it all looks rosy for YET ANOTHER season in this crap division. Mick has even put Elliot on the transfer list - he can see after all.

He played the unfortunate Stephen Ward in a position that did not suit and played the awful Collins - good in parts the previous year with Rob Edwards by his side - and then does not play Rosa, give the kids another go and messes with Eastwood - more than likely due to a bust up!
We have however signed more quality players in Elokobi, Jarvis, Foley, Edwards and Ebanks-Blake and although getting on Michael Gray was quality.
Less of the bickering, get players like Little, Jones, Davies and Gleeson back, sign 4 or 5 and we are going up!

The current team would have got into the playoffs had breen and kites been fit for the whole season. Mick has done a great job and why the doom and gloom merchants keep whinging god only knows. There us a determination at the club and I can see us going forward next year. however the competition will be very great and from now we compete with massive ‘parachute payments’.
We need to really impress by Christmas or Mick should walk. I believe he will be here in one year and we will be happy bunnies celebrating a great campaign. BUT THE CHANCE OF THIS WOULD BE IMP[ROVED IF THE MOLINEUX FACTOR WAS NO MORE.
Put aside the negatives and for one season focus on making Molineux a misrerable for the opposition - not our own players.

60 - if our aim is to get promotion name me one team who has from this division in recent years averaging 1.2goals per game!
not a gd of 1.2+goals per game but scored 1.2 per game

We all accept that the fans aren’t always right but from early in the season MM was warned by many that the collection of statues he called centre halfs were not good enough. The same applied to Stephen Elliott. Far far too late he has seen the light and is getting rid of them to “freshen things up”
Typical fans? with no football to scutinise.
The knowledgeable of us new we needed a few seasons to build, so why be unhappy when it happens?
MM brought guys in that he thought could do the job, so what! they did not and they will be replaced. (Chelsea 30M for Shev?????)
Patience is a virtue and we need it, I would like to see us promoted but unlike some teams I would like the chance to stay there.

We were told last winter to wait until the end of the season and sit in judgment then; now your saying wait for 10 games into next season, then it will be 20 games and then wait until the end of the season, and we will have failed to get promotion yet again.
Pillocks like you are letting this management make monkeys out of us! Under Moxey we have not improved from when he arrived here, and we are light years away from the Premiership. The teams coming down this year are much better than average, and next season will be much harder than this one.
In our hearts we all know that McCarthy isn’t capable of doing the job we want, yet nobody will step up and give his cards. Is he a big, hard bloke that everybody is frightened of? If so, I’ll do the job free of charge!

It’s not the fact that we finished 7th this season but its the fact that the performances week in week out were lacking in effort, passion and the will to win. MM could not (or would not) see this and been the stuban northener thats he is he stuck to his guns and failed to make any changes before or during each game, maybe he saw this as been weak in front of the fans and others in the club. But once he started been stubern he could not stop. If only he could have been less blinkered in his view of the players and the games as they were played.
As far as the players trying to stick up for MM and having a go at the fans, i think Jez and the PR people should put a stop to it. They should keep there mouths shut and proove to us next season that they are commited to the club and give there all in every game.
A prime example was Mo Camara (flymo) he was not the best player we ever had but he gave his all in every game, the fans knew that and got behind him when he flew down the wing (with or sometimes without the ball) never once did we accuse him of not trying.
Good look boys next season,
Northbank forever

37 Goldenballs. Good post but im afraid it falls on deaf ears. Our home form always lets us down time and time again, I wonder why??? . All this anti McCarthy rubbish is going to destroy another campainge. Back the Team totally through the entire season, good and bad performances, then have a moan if we are not where we should be but for god sake lets be united for once and lift the team. This is not a McCarthy made problem, its our problem which managers for years have had to battle with. This division is hard enough to get out of as it is without all this infighting.

Keogh is a good player and does a job with his hard work However he is not a 20 goal a season man So are we about to let Eastwood go looks like it another bad move by Mick the Mad man Hope we can get him out before next season is another flop

Why are we messing about with this 3rd rate managerial excuse? Out there is Paul Ince, one of the greatest players of the last generation. It is now obvious that he is also going to be one of the great managers of the future, because that is the type of fanatical winner he is.
We are so fortunate that Paul Ince wants to manage us and has promised that one day he will! Mr Morgan, just pick up the phone, pay him his worth. Sack McCarthy and Moxey, because I doubt that Ince would work with that flawed individual (Ince has standards), and just get the Guv’nor here. Let’s stop the split in the club that McCacrthey is creating, as he does everywhere he manages, and just let us become winners again. It *IS* as simple as that!
I am sick of us being a wolf pack of loosers! Bring back one of the footballing world’s biggest winners to be our Guv’nor!

We have judged McCarthy over the two years that he asked for.
He has been found Guilty by a vast majority. The penalty? Let’s give him another year!
This club is dysfunctional. No business could succeed with such idiotic thinking, and Wolves will fail to go up again, as a result!
Morgan OUT! Moxey OUT! McCarthy OUT!
OUT OF DARKNESS COMETH PAUL INCE!

“something which has spawned the ‘Molineux factor’ now readily accepted by the club.”
It is NOT accepted by the club (meaning the fans), it is just more spin being propagated by a few failures frantically looking to save their own skins and spinning the truth like mad!
It is so juvenile that, as a connoisseur of Wolves spin, I can confidently state that it emulated from the Moxey School of Spin!
Please don’t let these spin doctors make the fans the scapegoats for these failures own faults. We are loyal beyond most clubs, we pay out Premiership prices for Championship rubbish! We cheer any player who is playing fort the shirt. We have no respect for journeymen using us as a meal-ticket!
Moxey and McCarthy OUT NOW! Morgan is starting to look like an accomplice as well… he needs careful watching!

I am concerned that my last 11 comments have been censored, when I agree whole-heartedly with the policies of the management group!
Obviously the E&S are trying to suppress support of the the fine way that the Wolves are being run!
Mr McCarthy has managed to discover an oasis of football talent in the lower divisions which he has bought cheaply, and which we can nurture and sell on at a good profit. Why decry this achievement?
Wolves are not a Premiership team. Their future rest with being a nursery team for one of the important Premiership clubs.

I wonder if Rudyard Kipling was thinking of MM when he wrote:
‘If you can keep your head when all about are losing theirs and blaming it on you’.
I think the poem ends with:
‘If you can do all this, the world is yours, and all that’s in it.
And which is more, you’ll be a man, my son.’
– Enough said!

Fact is Mick the players you have brought in ain’t good enough. Apart from the Premiership season which SJH screwed up we have been in this league since 1989. If you pick your personal favourite team since then how many of the current squad would be considered ? Obviously Murray and Hennessey would be there. I dont think any outfield player would make the top 50. Any comments ?

So Mick has to be judged over two years. Has it taken the managers of Hull and Bristol City two years to get into Championship playoffs? Yet more teams who have come up from Division one, overtaken Wolves and gone to Premiership glory without the need for building, progress, and all the other claptrap. What will be his excuse next season when Carlisle come to Wolves, give us a lesson and move to the premiership?

McCarthy wants “judging over 2 seasons” well we have gone backwards! But don’t just put him on trial a certain Mr. Moxey should also put his hands up and admit his part in this season’s debacle. I, like most of Wolves bemused supporters had no idea wether we would finish 2nd or 22nd!!
There was no formula, no tactial approach and no formation to the sides that were sent out.
What we need is a manager who is passionate about our club, someone who can put his point of view over not only to the media but also to the board and Jez Moxey and win the arguement with passion and desire to push this club forward with a team blended with youth, experience and quality, not with just some of the cheap & cheerfuls picked up in last years close season.

37 Golden Balls and 59 The Chosen One
I agree with you both.
MM and the lads are probably just as disappointed as we fans all are that we did not make the play offs but i am still behind them 100%. What is the point in keep on changing Managers. This season is now over and the next season starts in August.
I am Wolves through and through and would have loved to have seen them in the play offs but realisticaly I did not think we were ready for the Premiership. I would prefer them to go up automatically.
Hope MM and the lads have a good break and come back fighting and get those balls in the back of the net (on a jovial point perhaps the groundsmen would like to have a look and make sure there is no cling film over the nets stopping the ball from going in for next season).

First it was judge me at the end of the season! Then wouldn’t admit he was terrible and looks like staying. Now he wants us to judge him over two years! geez, why not the end of the next millenium! Give him even more chance to show us how inept he is!

Oh i see. SEB played 39 games this season. Kev played 29. That is ten more games for SEB and only one more goal. He actually played one more game than the whole team did. He should have been top scorer then.

for us to be challanging for the play-offs next season i think it is crucial for us to strengthen our defence.
i work in the ASDA next to the mol and there has been talk that Julian Bennett has been in talks at the club this afternoon.
i feel that with a signing of this calibre it will increase our chances of a top 6 finish.
what do ppl think?

I am left cross by the refusal of the club to listen to the majority of the fans. Reminds me of a certain politician who is still promising to listen, but doesn’t!
If Morgan and Moxey won’t get rid of this serial-failure, then remember that there is another way to get rid of him. It is ugly, but he seems to like ugly, judging by the dire football we have to put up with.
When the fans chant non-stop for McCarthy to go, then Morgan will have no option. That’s how football works. Ugly, but if it’s the only way, then so it has to be!
