Coventry to haggle on Freddy cost

freddy.jpgCoventry City chairman Ray Ranson today confirmed his club’s interest in signing Wolves reject Freddy Eastwood.

But the Midlands neighbours are set for another conflict over the valuation of the 24-year-old striker.

Coventry were ready to give Wolves their money back when they originally bid for the player in a loan now, pay later offer in the last days of March.

They agreed to take Eastwood on a loan basis until the end of the season before paying £1.5m to secure the player on a permanent basis.

But having survived their relegation scare by the skin of their teeth, Coventry owner Ranson is ready to haggle over how much his club will pay for the Welsh international.

That Coventry are still interested has at least been confirmed with Ranson saying today: “Would we be interested in signing Eastwood? Yes.

“We’ve got several bids on the table for players.

“It’s an ongoing daily process and needless to say the fax machine is working at the Ricoh. I’m speaking to clubs and agents all the time.”

Ranson and Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey have not yet started negotiating over Eastwood and the air could be frosty when they do. Coventry were furious that Wolves pulled the plug on the previous deal at the last minute.

The Molineux chief then hit back with an equally critical response over the comments of Coventry manager Chris Coleman.

But Eastwood is now on the transfer list and his agent has indicated to Coventry that he favours a move down the M6.

The only other club so far linked with Eastwood has been Crystal Palace although their manager Neil Warnock has distanced himself from that speculation.

    1. pondlife - getting good money for our players is the one thing Moxey is good at. Would love to know how many potential signings he has lost for the club due to not wanting to pay the transfer fee or the salary that people want nowadays. While Moxey is here the Balance Sheet will always look good. If that makes you happy rather than promotion then he is a star.

Okay so we have SEB, but we dont have a proven goalscorer if SEB gets injured or supsended, or even, if he decides to leave. Eastwood will score goals wherever he goes. Keogh is not a goalscorer. I think its a big mistake letting Freddy go, he has been treated unfairly by mccarthy who has been too stubborn with the situation. Would love to see him have another season and given a good run in the team. I truly believe with Freddy in the team during the season we would have surely made the playoffs, maybe gone up automatically.

Pondlife - I have absolutely no confidence in Moxey’s ability.

I have absolutely full confidence in the ignorance of some fans that still quote one bit of good transfer negotiation in light of a high number of disasterous deals. I know the managers also have to share responsibility but in the same time that he did well with one deal, we signed Silas for money and let him go for nothing, we didn’t make anything on McIndoe, we got way under market value for Lescott (certainly based on the £2.5m them lot got for McShane from Sunderland), can’t see us recouping the Darren Ward money, Franckowski cost us, we didn’t do that well financially from Kenny Miller, we lost £100K on Seol despite selling him to a prem team, Carl Cort, Paul Butler, Cedric Roussel etcetera etcetera. I can only think of Camara, Naylor and Lescott - two of whom came through the books - where we actually made a profit of more than the cost of a bag of chips. Same certainly can’t be said of the club down the road who are so much stronger financially because of considerably more astute transfer activity. Yet people still praise Jez ???

Still, why let facts get in the way of a good argument. Moxey’s spin must be working (on some).

But it will always be a mystery to me why McCarthy didn’t let him go out on loan as if he had been as successful, as many here suggest he would be given a run in the team, we could then have either kept him or sold him at a greater price. Even more of a mystery considering he hardly even played after the loan deal was scrapped.

For those of you that thought Eastwood was the best thing sinse Marradonna, please bare in mind Kyle as a good player.

The set up cross for Henry was sublime against Charlton away. He made a real difference against Boggies when we resoted to direct play. And the goal against Palace was amazing. And he has been on the pitch far less minutes than Freddy.

I am not saying Freddy is uselss or that Kyle is brilliant. They are 2 different types of player.

But please do not make Freddy out to be a super star. He has played more than enough minutes of football to prove himself and he has failed.

You lot make me laugh. How fickle are all of you? I will tell you the real reason why Eastwood will not be a Wolves player next season. Mick got proved wrong with Jody Craddock, the fans were right to chant Craddocks name and sort out our defence. It was shoddy until Craddock came back from Stoke. He didnt want to lose face against the fans twice so he simply did not pick him out of principle.

You can say he did nothing for us, he didnt fit in blah blah blah. How about the games he came on and saved us? Half of you obviously dont go up if you think he didnt.

Who put the ball through for Olofinjana against plymouth? Who gave us the chance to draw against QPR? I just think that given the chance (instead of 30 mins at most) he wouldve made a real difference to our promotion campaign. . Instead the only time McCarthy did start with him was with Steven Elliott, who frankly doesnt know his back passage from his elbow.

Mick wanted a player who can work hard, track back and get 25 goals a season. How many top strikers do you see doing that in this day and age? He could have the best scouting system in the world and still not find a striker that does all of that.

I’ll always rate Eastwood has one of the best strikers we’ve had up Wolves for a long time. The fans know it and I honestly beleive Mick knows it.

I agree with someones comments earlier, about McIndoe he had the most crosses of a ball in the league for us last season. We let him go cheaply in my opinion, he didnt want to play for us, but he was under contract. He had a decent injury record too.

I really hope he comes back to haunt us. Good luck Mr Eastwood.

Wolves are always trying to get players on the cheap and promotion on the cheap. He loves MM’s policy of buying players at low cost and low salaries from the lower leagues cause it keeps the clubs finances healthy.
All this is great - unless of course like me you want Wolves to be successful. Wolves are no closer to being a premier league club now than the day Moxey and MM arrived.

The trouble with us football fans is that everything is either brill or sh*te!
Yes, Moxey cleaned up the club well after the mess with petty criminals and rippers-off in the late 90s. Also, he’s done a fair job keeping us in the black.
On the negative side, the floodlights failed before a match a few seasons ago. This season the Scunny match had to be postponed after the underground heating failed. Over the last eight years there have been several occasions when ticket-sales arrangements were unsatisfactory (although I admit these have improved recently).
Now the regular sniping between Mick McCarthy and some of the players, on the one hand, and some of the fans, on the other, is a PR disaster. Moxey has not only failed to prevent this civil warfare, he has set the tone for this self-destructive behaviour.
But what really irks is the complacency of the fans who say Moxey did well over Henri Camara. We should have been able to do a good part-exchange deal with Portsmouth or Wigan, e.g., for Diomancy Kamara + cash. Instead we only got cash, £180,000 of which was paid to Moxey as a bonus. With the rest did we buy a player or players who helped get us back to the Premiership? And at that time we had the parachute payments too!
In 1999-2000, the season before Moxey came we finished 6th. This season we finished 7th. No progress in eight years!
Those who defend Moxey simply prove that they are satisfied with everlasting mediocrity. Moxey is not brill or sh*te–he’s mediocre. Mediocrities do not gain automatic promotion!

(league)freddy has made 21 appearances for wolves, he has had 10 starts (league). in those games he has scored 3 goals, 2 in the same match in which he was a sub (blackpool). If you take away those 2 goals against blackpool he has scored 1 goal in 30 appearances, with 10 starts included in those 30 appearances. so he has a strike record of 10 starts, 20 appearances as sub…… 1 goal. (prolific??, not given a chance??) I believe his stats are far worse than frankowski’s!!

So, if you look at his stats he is as poor as any striker we have at the club. He has started around 1 in every 4 league games this season… and has been poor in each.

how can you say he hasn’t had any chances when he clearly has and he has clearly failed to produce. Why do you imagine him to be some goal scoring machine, when he clearly isn’t?
