Boss McCarthy defends reign

Mick McCarthyMick McCarthy admits he hasn’t delivered on the promotion pledge made to Wolves fans a year ago.

But the Molineux boss insists his two-year tenure can still be viewed as a success in the rebuilding of Wolves following the Glenn Hoddle era.

“I understand the supporters’ feelings. I know everyone was really disappointed,” said McCarthy. “If everything is judged purely and simply on being promoted, then I haven’t done the job well enough.

“But maybe people should take a broader view based on the two years I’ve been here.

“The team has evolved, changed and got better and there are four or five players knocking on my door looking for new contracts with Premier League clubs wanting to sign them.

“Well, I went out and got those players and I signed them.”

McCarthy added: “When I walked in here on July 21 almost two years ago, the first question asked was ‘are you going to keep them up?’ because people thought relegation was going to happen.

“So if we’d finished 10th last season instead of finishing in the play-offs, would it have been easier for me now?

“We did it the wrong way around in reaching the play-offs in the first season. But if we’d been 10th then seventh, we’d have been saying that’s progression.

“Unfortunately that’s not the case because we got in the play-offs the first time of asking.

“But I’m excited about the prospect of this team moving forward, and with a bit more help, we’ll try to get there because we’ve got good players.”

McCarthy’s ill-advised ‘sad fans’ comments added fuel to the fire following the play-offs miss.

But he insists he has no problem with the Molineux faithful and results will determine his future.

“I’ve never said I’m unhappy (with the fans),” he said. “I’d have loved to have sent them home happy against Southampton for example, but we conceded a late equaliser and I can’t go on the pitch and mark the scorer.

“Thirty seconds from being a hero, I was a complete idiot.”

Right Gents, I want this man out like the majority but its not going to happen! So we have to put it behind us and concentate on having a positive pre-season and good start. Mick tell Moxey to get off his backside, get the players you want in by the start of pre-season and lets push on, lets not wait until the last week of the window to get everbody in as I will not be happy, lets get orgainised and let us all unite together.

He is a idiot. I dont judge the season on not getting promoted , i judge it on the fact that i have been bored for 95 % of the games attended this season.I dont mind losing as long as we 2have a go” last game of season shows this as we need 3 goals and we had 2 shots. As for the players signed, kightly and Blake are the only good signings (foley 2 million yes please) the bad one far out way the good one- Ward (both), elliot, potter , gibson, collins.

Perhaps we should have listened to McIndoe’s comments when he asked for a transfer.

Well said Mick, maybe next season is the time to push for automatic promotion? Just a few more additions & the team will be able to do it. I have faith in your management, you’ve brought some quality players & you should bring a few more in next season. Good Luck next season Mick.

Obviously confused dot.com. He is trying to get us to see the positives and it’s true that MM has made good signings and moved the club forward but I am lost in the ‘if we had done it the other way round’ scenario. We didn’t. Ultimately a club such as Wolves, because of the history and expectation, should be in the top flight. Of course shoulds won’t come into it unless the team perform. There is no divine right. However there were blunders this season and not all of them were due to late goals. The problems in defense were there before the season started. It would be better if MM was honest and said particularly what he thought the problems were. At the moment he is being isingenuous and it is this not the mistakes that I don’t like. None the less for some strange reason I still believe in him and that the club will go up next season.

MM OUT!

As usual McCarthy dont understand when it is his fault. The late equalizer from Southampton was a tactical mistake from Hennessy in not having a defending player placed at each post. The late equalizer from Ipswich was also a tactical mistake from Hennessy who let in an easy freekick in his side of the goal. As long as staff and players dont understand their mistakes they can not learn and stop this kinds of silly season damaging mistakes.

Yes,Mick you’re doing a fantastic job.So how come Stoke ( I ask ya Stoke ) get promoted. Bristol City get to Wembley and probably Hull. We should never have finished lower than these and that’s whats so galling. We expect to be up there at least challenging the likes of Middlesbrough,Newcastle,Tottenham,Man City,Pompey not where we are.25 years of bad management and under acheivement.

“A complete idiot” your words not mine, Mick ! Inspite of the fact we have several young players attracting interest from the prem there was a distinct lack of quality about the rest of the team and the style of play. The retention of Collins and S.Ward fills me with dread - Eastwood may or maynot have been good enough - he scored 3 league goals from 10 starts - but how Rosa didn’t even make the bench for a team whose midfield was devoid creativity and goals for much of the season is a mystery to me. The trouble is we are all looking to the new signings (whoever they may be) to turn us into a side capable of automatic promotion and if we are midtable after 7 or 8 games next season the atmosphere will make last seasons jeering feel like a tea party! (ask Graham Taylor, Mark McGhee, Dave Jones, Twaddle etc…!)

His ability to manage them is woeful, he failed to deliver and like anyone else who works should take the blame and do the honourable thing and resign. My estimation of him then would actually go up.

I’m just going to comment on last night, michael Mcindoe has showed mccarthy up and proved our football club wrong. as one of our best players last season, we brought in jarvis who yes is a good player but not as good as mcindoe, it shows mccarthys ambitions for the club which are low if we are selling club, thats why we haven’t won PROMISED promotion, i have renwewed early bird for next season and that for a 15 year old is expensive, i sing my heart out for the club yet don’t get rewarded like many other fans, i know mccarthy won’t go so weve got to get behind him otherwise the finish of next season will be even worse than this season.

I would like to see gerard pique from man utd come on loan for the season as well as chris riggott from boro, he played reasonably well on loan at stoke and helped them get promoted. As for the creative midfielder what about mark davies or denes rosa? as for up front what about rory fallon from plymouth he did well against craddock and breen and could be perfect foil for SEB. At least Kyle has gone back. Despite what has happend this season we need to get behind the team ever match whether we are winning 1-0 or losing 3-0 and stop booing the players, if the boo boys are not happy with the performances vote with ur feet and don’t attend future games. Come on Lads lets get to the promised land!!

McIndoe has played for the following clubs : Luton, Hereford, Yeovil, Doncaster, Derby, Barnsley, Wolves and now Bristol City.

You’d think he was 35, but no, he’s 28 years old. Does that tell you something ? Its nearly 1 club for every year of his 20’s !! May be MM did make a mistake, or may be McIndoe through his toys out the pram because he “wasn’t getting enough of the ball” as he was quoted as saying on leaving Wolves.

Point is none of us know and Im tired of people saying MM was wrong to sell him with nothing to base it on !

31 spot on mate. We did over achieve when we got in the playoffs but after spending a few million last summer on players who in the end, contributed nothing last season and persistantly playing players who are Div 1 standard, we got what we deserved because we aint good enough. Tactics and players signed are down to MM, he should carry the can and be dismissed. But it won’t happen i’m afraid.

Great shout McIndoe has caused problems wherever he has been, I work with a lot of Derby fans, when he was on loan there, George Burley the then Derby manager dropped him and fined him for being drunk at training, he never signed permanently, its very ironic he scored last night but it wouldnt surprise me if he leaves again this summer.

Matt Jarvis is a more than worthy replacement and I am sure he will prove that next season.

With regard to Mad Mick, he is going to be our manager next season so the moaners and groaners better get used to it, you can moan, wing, log your personal and unconstrustive comments but it wont change a thing, so start looking forward, last season is over moaning about it wont change a thing. Hopefully MM will learn from this season and turn us into team capable of challenging for promotion.

Its time to look forward last season is over

I can understand why he wants to be judged on 2 years rather than 1 cause the first year he did a good job and the second year he didn’t.
I do feel we go into next year with the basis of a team to challenge for promotion but I felt that a year ago. The biggest reasons we didn’t progress was the cautious tactics adopted for most of the season and the fact that a number of the new signings did nothing to improve the team (or in one case weren’t given the chance to).
With SEB, Kightly and Jarvis we have the basis of a really good attacking unit. And with the likes of Edwards, Davies and Gleeson in midfield we could have good attacking support.
But sadly under MM the focus will be on trying to win games 1-0 and then saying if only we scored more goals.
The players we have could win this division next year but I think a brain transplant for MM would be needed to get him to go for it rather than concentrating on putting a shift in and defending from the front.

Why don’t we all take a chill pill, give up on our pity parties, and just see who Mick brings in over the Summer. He seems to have looked at the squad, put the ones who haven’t worked out on to the transfer list, and hopefully is looking at bringing in two CB’s, at least one striker, and a few youngsters already at the club as back-ups.

Hopefully we will see Davies, Gleeson, Gobern, Little, Lee Collins, Liam Hughes, Dan Jones, Elliott Bennett and a few others of our own youngsters at least play a part this season.

If Davies can be fit we don’t need to sign a midfield playmaker. He is exactly that. Our midfield has a surfeit of riches. In addition to those mentioned, we also have Kights, Jarvis, Olly, Edwards, Henry. There are at least two full sets of midfielders there that would get in most Championship sides.

In my opinion, CB is our biggest area of weakness, but maybe Little and Elokobi may eventually be playing there. We still need another two though, for now.
