A black Toyota Aygo and a Fiat Punto collided outside Freshways on the A449 Stafford Road in Fordhouses during this morning’s rush hour.

The accident caused chaos on the dual carriageway in both directions and motorists trying to get off the M54 at Junction Two were caught in severe congestion.

When police arrived they redirected drivers back on to the M54 to enter Wolverhampton at Junction One, the A460 Cannock Road, causing two-mile tailbacks between the two junctions.

The Highways Agency was forced to close Junction Two to motorists travelling from Birmingham.

The County Air Ambulance was scrambled and landed at the Goodrich factory following the accident at 7.45am. The driver of the Toyota was airlifted to New Cross Hospital and was in a critical condition this morning. It is not thought the male and female in the Fiat were injured.

Hundreds of drivers were caught up in the aftermath of the accident as emergency crews dealt with the scene.

Cars trying to get towards the M54 from Wolverhampton were stuck in queues more than a mile long that snaked back past Oxley Moor Road.

Emma Partridge, media relations officer for Birmingham Midshires at Wobaston Road, Pendeford, said many staff were caught in queues. “It mainly affected colleagues that use the M54, but it also took me 40 minutes to get in from Tettenhall, a journey that usually takes a few minutes,” she said.

“Pendeford was completely clogged up and traffic backed up as far back as Aldersley.”

John Russell, a 53-year-old office worker from Newport got caught up in the aftermath of the accident.

“I got off the M54 at 7.45am and the accident had obviously just happened because the traffic just was not moving,” he said. “I didn’t get into work until after 9am.”
