Street shut after shots

Shots were fired in West Bromwich town centre, prompting police to seal off the high street.

Nobody is believed to have been hurt during the shooting in the early hours of yesterday morning, but a 27-year-old man has been arrested.

A large stretch of High Street was cordoned off by police yesterday following the shooting, which took place just before 4am in the Duchess Parade area. 

DCI Danny Long, from West Bromwich Police, said the gunman was caught on town centre CCTV cameras firing several shots into the air. A gun and bullets had now been recovered from the scene.

“Thankfully no-one was injured but there are plenty of restaurants, kebab houses and late night bars around West Bromwich so even in the early hours there are people around who could have been in danger if they had walked across that,” he said.

Police spokeswoman Sarah Astbury said officers were now appealing for witnesses following the shooting. 

“To date no-one has been reported injured,” she said. “Investigations are ongoing.”

Throughout the day forensics officers scoured the pedestrianised area around the markets and along the Duchess Parade section of High Street outside the Kings and Queens Square shopping centres. 

 The man was arrested on suspicion of possessing a gun with intent to injure.
