Car ploughs into beer garden

The silver Audi convertible ploughed through the beer garden of the Miller & Carter pub, formerly the Penn Cottage, and hit one of the outside tables.

The accident happened shortly before 8pm last night as drinkers were soaking up the last rays of the weekend sun in the garden of the pub, which overlooks the A449 between Penn and Wombourne.

Families using the garden looked on in horror as the car, which was travelling out of Wolverhampton, left the dual-carriageway Stourbridge Road and struck a sign before colliding with the wooden picnic table. An ambulance was sent to the scene, but nobody was seriously injured in the smash.

West Midlands Ambulance Spokesman Chris Kowalik said that the matter was now in the hands of police.

The accident has raised fresh concerns about the safety of the 70mph stretch of road.

The dual carriageway, which is one of the major routes into Wolverhampton, has been the scene of numerous accidents.
