Armed raid at Nando’s

Nando’sA gunman wearing a balaclava burst into a Dudley restaurant and threatened a employee before making off with cash.

The robbery happened at Nando’s next to the Showcase Cinema on the Castlegate Way Park at 9am yesterday as an employee prepared to open up. Police today said the raider threatened a male member of staff with a handgun demanding cash.

No shots were fired, and the employee was not hurt.

The offender escaped with the money in a waiting getaway car as the employee raised the alarm. An exact figure for the amount taken has not been revealed.

The robbery is the first to have hit the restaurant, which opened in 2004 and is part of the Portugese chain which has branches around the world. Dean Boiles, managing director of Nando’s Midlands restaurants, said: “Fortunately, our member of staff was not hurt but I am appalled at what has happened.”

The restaurant opened its doors later in the day and was open as normal today.

A businessman on the Castlegate complex, who didn’t want to be named, said: “It is very worrying. We get a lot of children and families around here.”

The offender is thought to be Asian, about 5ft 11in to 6ft, and wearing a balaclava.

He carried the money out of the premises in a beige and dark green holdall, and escaped in a waiting small blue or purple car, driven by a second male, who is also believed to be Asian. The car has black trim down the sides and possibly has white wheels or wheel trims.
