Boss hoping to find some bargains

korensecondceleb1.jpgTony Mowbray today warned Albion fans that not all of their summer recruits will be big-money signings.

The Baggies boss is on the lookout for bargains in the close season as well as significant cash buys as he looks to beef up his squad for an assault on the Premier League.

He said: “You get to a level where you start looking at a player who is going to improve your team and you can’t afford the transfer fee or the wages either.

“Don’t be surprised this summer if there are a few pretty low-cost signings where we buy the quality and the talent.

“We have seen examples like Robert Koren and Shelton Martis, who have contributed this season.

“There might be players who we recognise and like the talent of, but they cost practically nothing.

“The assumption is that we are going to go out and spend millions. I don’t believe we always have to do that. There is a media-driven impression that if you don’t spend £40m you’ve got no chance. Time will tell whether that is right or wrong.

“Hopefully we will spend a few quid on some players, but there will also be some players brought in that we gamble on a little bit.”

Mowbray is likely to have to strengthen the fringes of his squad with Premier League rules changing next season to allow seven subs.

Yes ABROAD how many players do good abroard and flop in England ? Shevchenko being one. Todd LOL. Did you see his mistake against Blackburn when he passed it to Roberts ? Theres only 2 players i’d have off Derby & thats Barnes & Miller.

  15. Boing Boing said:

    LOL.

Cole - He cant cut it in the Prem. Hence why Sunderland have let him go.

Todd - He’s shocking. Did you see his mistake against Blackburn when he passed it to Roberts ?

Iversen - Yes he’s record abroard might be good. What did he do at Wolves ? How many players come from abroad and flop in England ? Shevchenko being one.

I don’t know if others agree but I love a bargain like RK or Tex much more than a mega bucks player, keep on looking TM.
    6 TWB, brilliant.
Can’t help agreeing with Boing Boing more than RF and I don’t think TM goes for players on the downward spiral. Moses would be an excellent signing if we could get him.

  18. jsouthbank said:

shows how much your players like you having a parade!!!

  19. BENNYBOY said:

I am behind TM all the way. Only spend cash if it will improve the team considerably. Usually the big transfer fees means a high wage bill for the player. You have to find the value for money players and if they are no better than what we have, keep the cash awhile.
Hanging on his every word, Sir Tony Mowbray the main man.

Players are born with some difference in footballing ability, but it’s clubs that decide to pay 1 mil. or 50mil. for one guy.In other words, many players are overpriced,so TM has shown you can get quality (Koren,Tex,etc.)on the cheap if you know where to look.Have faith in his judgement.

  22. ProudWolvesFan said:

iversen is awful! think you should come for keogh and bothroyd!

  23. Paul Jones said:

Its going to be bargain basement signings unfortunately. Reports from Ireland suggest Paddy McCourt will be one of the first. Apparently a bit of a talent but not what the fans expect. However, Mowbray did find Sproule of Bristol City.

    Go baggies :(

  24. no1baggiesfan said:

7, sorry, andy cole is way past his best, wouldnt say no to richardson tho, i think he’d fit in better here than at macamland.
luke moore must have made a very good impression on tm in training if he’s staying.
1, how the hell could we get a good price from gera, he’s soon to be a free agent you plum.

If there’s one lesson we’ve learnt from the life of Bryan, it’s don’t go for ’stars’ in decline. It may have a very short term benefit but ultimately it’s counter productive. They want big money and expect to dictate when they play. Before anyone sites KP, players like him, Strachan and Speed are exceptions. Young and hungry must be the way forward.

oh dear, you may have the edge at the moment but how its going to swing back and stay with wolves in the next few years. reduced capacity at the poorthorns, bargain signings, giving 3000 tickets to local schools, tickets for a £10 to try to fill the ground when your winning the league & a chairman with very limited ambition, you just sold your best youth team player to pompey! look across to the bigger club 12 miles down the road, new quality signings, 40000 stadium (which would be easily filled in the prem) enjoy next season but you wont get more than 30 points. cheerio to your 2 best players.

  34. Wbaforever said:

    Bully

    100% correct mate.

Journeymen after a last pay packet is not the way to go.

Quite a few Albion fans appear to be ready to condemn the board in general and JP in particular regarding articles like the one above, stating bargains or loans,
we have just witnessed a season of great football, acclaimed by the press and pundits,
and what did we achieve this with ?……….
    BARGAINS & LOANS.

The fact is Albion will not go out and spend
£10m and upwards on a single player,
and it confirms the absolute ridiculousness of
the current climate when Liverpool slap a
£15m price tag on Peter Crouch.

I trust our manager IMPLICITLY to unearth the
as yet, unknown talent to preserve our new found
    status.

  35. Romsley Baggie said:

Lots of dingles on here trying to ridicule us? I honestly don’t get this? Can some dingle explain to me how you can say anything detrimental about your superior rivals? I say rivals but that suggests that you are an equal to us and you are quite clearly not.

People who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones, Ward,Breen,Jarvis, gray talking about bargin basement without any quality need I go on you MUPPETS!!!!!

Koren (FREE) Texiera (650K) (Miller Loan then 900K) Bedner (Loan then 2M) Barnett (3M)Hoefkins (900K) Gera (1.5M) Super KEV (650K) All of these players would walk into the Wolves team ahead of any of your players now that is what the article is about quality not quantity of Fee. Maybe you should use our club as a business model then you wouldn’t keep failing season after season and you may actually start achieving something. If anyone of you dingles can’t understand me I’m sorry but I have tried to keep the explination a simple as possible!!!

    Boing Boing

Leaving the dingles behing the Mowbury way, value for money but still with style……… Of course oh yes

  36. Baggie boy said:

33.. How wrong can you be our best youth is a young black lad cant remember his name.

Whats the problem with idiots like you and giving tickets to schools and under privaliged kids.

We could go down the line of your owner paid ten pound for the whole club trying to fill it every week.
If we only get 15 points thats 15 more than you will be getting in the prem wont it!!!!!!!

  37. Romsley Baggie said:

33 Laughing Wolf, I think you need to wear a hat when the sun is out mate then you would be able to keep hold of what little marbles you actually have. Quality signings?, who exactly? 40,000 seater stadium with 20,000 at best inside it, makes loads of sense. A football team capable a of mid table place at best currently in the Championship with a manger who plays football in the dark ages with little hope of going anywhere.

    I think the truth hurts.

Watch and learn, we will stay up next season, on thing is certain though, you definately won’t go up!!! Lioke your school report, NOT GOOD ENOUGH SUNNYJIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    BYE BYE!!!!!

I am quite intrigued by the name though,

    Laughingwolf

Are you of native American extraction ?

Does your name imply hilarity at the dismal failure of Albion ?

Or, the contented warm glow of your season ?

If the latter…..you are easily amused.

Was it not Laughing Wolf that predicted our downfall this season? Was it not Laughing Wolf that predicted His tribe winning the championship this season? Was it not Laughing Wolf that said that the buffalo would return to Bilston and the mighty Dingle nation would rise again led by Geronimick?

From News of the world “SUNDERLAND are prepared to sell Kieran Richardson and Paul McShane at knockdown prices — with Premier League new-boys West Brom set to pounce.
Black Cats boss Roy Keane signed the pair for £8.5million last summer but will now accept a combined £5m for the duo”. I say take it.

Lateef Elford Alliyu is the young lad you’re thinking of. England U-16 international and already playing for the reserves age FIFTEEN!! Scored a goal from 40 yards out in a pre-season friendly!! The other lad Hirst is also gonna be top quality tho and it’s sad to lose him but we picked up David Worrall from Bury last season in much the same manner, it happens!!

McShane is a complete non-starter! Awful at Prem level!! I’d take David Murphy off the Blues tho!?!?
