A sports car smashed through a fence onto a railway platform today – narrowly missing Black Country commuters.
A bright yellow Toyota Celica ploughed through a garden and fence before coming to rest on the edge of a platform.
Trains were halted after the car went down Vicarage Street, Oldbury, before careering into Langley Green Station on Western Road. Two men escaped from the wreckage unhurt but were arrested by police called to the scene at about 7.45am.
Robert Hill, of Vicarage Street resident whose garden backs on to the station, said: “With people travelling to work on the train it is amazing no one was killed and that the car did not go on to the track. Whoever was in the car or on the station are very lucky.” The car was lifted over Mr Hill’s garden by crane at around 10.30am.
A resident, who asked not to be named, said: “The car went across three front gardens, knocking down a fence and some trees. I was I bed when it happened.
“I just heard brakes screeching and a really loud bang. I got up to see what had happened. All the neighbours came outside. The fence was down with a really big hole in it. Our front lawn and those of two of our neighbours have been damaged.”
Daljinder Mattu, of British Transport Police said:“Trains were initially stopped. BTP officers are on the scene and investigating working alongside West Midlands Police, Network Rail and London Midland. No one was injured. Trains have resumed but are not stopping at the platform bound for Worcester. Platform two trains for Birmingham bound are continuing to run.”
