Wolverhampton’s red route is the first Labour-led project to be scrapped under the new Tory-Lib Dem alliance.
The “no-stopping” scheme along the A449 Stafford Road is facing the axe under the new regime.
Conservative leader Councillor Neville Patten today described the red route, aimed at cutting jams, as “unnecessary” and pledged to dump it.
He said: “It was unnecessary to spend all that money when yellow lines would have done the same job.
“The Liberal councillors are supporting us in getting rid of it. We will wait for officers to complete a review of it in June because we want to do it properly but we want it scrapped as soon as possible.”
The move, which has the backing of all five Liberal Democrat councillors, will see the red lines removed and 250 signs torn down.
The alliance is also hoping for no council tax rise next year and is speeding up plans for kerbside recycling for plastics and cardboard.
