Micky Adams has refused to rule himself out of the running for the vacant Walsall manager’s job, as the club revealed that interviews are yet to begin.
The former Coventry City boss has been out of work since January, after leaving Colchester United following a brief spell as assistant to Geraint Williams at Layer Road, but he is known to be keen to get back in the game as a No 1.
“I’ve had no contact with anybody at Walsall,” Adams said. “But I’m an out of work football manager and I consider all options that are put to me.
“I haven’t applied for the job, but purely because of the fact that I think I’ve got a good CV and people know I’m out of work.”
Adams carved out a reputation as one of the brightest young managers in the business after leading Fulham from 91st position in the Football League to what is now the Championship, before Mohammed Al-Fayed’s takeover of the club.
He followed that up by turning round the fortunes of both Brighton and Leicester and appeared to be doing the same at Coventry until a 5-0 thrashing at the hands of Albion started a run of poor form which eventually led to his dismissal.
Saddlers chief executive Roy Whalley said: “There haven’t been any interviews so far, but the matter is under the active consideration of the board and we would expect the process to increase in pace in the coming days.”

“I haven’t applied for the job, but purely because of the fact that I think I’ve got a good CV and people know I’m out of work.”- NO THANKS BIG HEAD!!!
Im annoyed by the comment that no interviews have started yet! Get your fingers out, its taken Bonser two weeks to collect CV’s- oh no hes been on a sailing course for one of them!!
BONSER OUT!!
If JB had any sense at all he’d pick up the phone, ring dicky dosh, and tell him “here’s £250000″ to use for signing players that are actually in contract somewhere, not thrown into the football league bargain bin as no-one wants them!!
I know. I’m dreaming on all elements of comment there!
The E&S quotes Whalley as saying “Some difficult decisions have been made as we look to develop a squad capable of making further progress”.
Sounds OK until you look at the BBC’s version which says “… to develop a squad capable of making further progress at this level and build on the foundations that have already been laid.”
The difference in emphasis and context is enlightening and suggests that there is no real ambition. ‘Progress’ is then 11th place next year and so on. Notice too there’s no description of the ‘foundations’?
Financial ‘foundations’ may be strong (good balance sheet?); football-wise I think we’re as bad off as we were last year with yet another clearout pending the arrival of further footballing journeymen to shore up a small core of promising youngsters who’ll be sold on if they ‘perform’ next January.
We need, no DESERVE, a full and frank statement of intent from Bonser/Whalley about their targets for next season and HOW we’re going to achieve them, not meaningless management-speak.
Where’s the probing journalism to set the record straight once and for all and tell us all up front what we can expect for next year and beyond?? Is there a plan to get us into the Championship in 2-3 years or is it always going to be a non cost-effective goal??
Bonser will not employ anyone who has not applied for the job, and when I’m hiring I don’t pick up the phone and call people who haven’t applied either - so fair enough. Adams will not get the job if he doesn’t apply.
It would be a champion appointment.
“I haven’t applied for the job, but purely because of the fact that I think I’ve got a good CV and people know I’m out of work.”
Jason, I think the club actually said that they wouldn’t approach someone if they hadn’t applied and IF they were in a job already (Mr Kelly for instance). Presumably, they might approach someone who isn’t in work.
Also please remember that there are always names banded about and we always appoint someone that no-one has heard of!
Micky Adams?….That’s just paper speak.
Bonser made it quite clear that he will only interview paople that apply. That has always been his way cos he likes to have the upper hand!
My guess is that we won’t have a new manager for another month or so…………watch this space!
If you want it apply for it -you dont apply you are not considered are you?
Ah, but he is now at Brighton!!! Great rumour mill!!
i realy do feel sorry for you walsall fans i mean your a good club should be up there with the wolves and birmingham but instead your in league 1 and seliing loads of players including Tommy Mooney !! i mean come on!!
cmon walsall we can do way better than that
10 - Up there with Wolves and Birmingham!? No thanks, rather stay where we are. Maybe up there with Albion would suit.
