Football fans are continuing to flout parking laws in Wolverhampton, with double the average amount of fines being issued on match days.
Around 70 fixed penalty notices are dished out to motorists on a normal day - but figures show this rockets when Wolves play at home. Despite a crackdown by wardens, streets around Molineux are regularly packed with illegally parked cars. Figures released to the Express & Star show the highest number of tickets, 139, were handed out when Wolves played Ipswich on April 19.
As thousands of fans watched the nail-biting Black Country derby on April 15, wardens gave out 130 fines.
And when Wolves drew with QPR in a thrilling match on March 22, 132 fans returned to their cars to face yellow tickets on the windscreen.
The hotspots include most of the streets around Molineux, Whitmore Reans, the university, Chapel Ash, Graiseley and Merridale.
The area around the ground is the only place in Wolverhampton to have a residents’ parking scheme, but householders have been complaining in droves about fans persistantly ignoring the rules.
“We do have a problem with cars illegally parking on match days,” he added.
“It is a cause of many complaints from residents and businesses who contact us to say they are being blocked or cannot park anywhere near their homes or premises.
“On an average day we issue around 70 penalty charge notices, but that figure does increase considerably on match days.
“It is a problem that the council is actively attempting to tackle.
“There are plenty of legitimate parking facilities around the city centre and we would urge fans to use them.”
