We cannot fail again - Morgan

wd2128001soccer-steve-mo.jpgSteve Morgan issued a fresh promotion pledge to disheartened Wolves fans after their Premier League dreams died for another year at Molineux yesterday.

The 1-0 victory over Plymouth in front of a packed crowd was not enough to leapfrog Adrian Boothroyd’s limping Watford outfit who clung to sixth place and the play-offs with a 1-1 draw at Blackpool.

That left Wolves stranded in seventh by the agonising margin of one fewer in the goal-difference column which brought a flat finish to a difficult season for manager Mick McCarthy and his players.

But Morgan, continuing the tradition of an end-of-season chairman’s address from the centre circle, came out fighting despite a year which has seen Wolves slide from fifth-placed finish on 76 points to seventh with six points less.

“We just have to make sure we don’t need the play offs next season,” he said. “We have to make sure we win it.

“I don’t remember ever seeing a group of players who have actually won a game look so unhappy. We all feel the same.

“It’s my first year at the club, it’s been a very emotional, up and down season, we’ve had our bad spell but plenty of good times as well.

“I’m so excited to be here and I know Wolves are moving forward and we will be back where we belong - in the Premiership.”The Cheshire-based millionaire staged initial talks with McCarthy and chief executive Jez Moxey last week to discuss their summer plans, a further sign that the grumbling disatisfaction among fans about the manager’s performance this season is not shared in the office that matters.

The biggest problem for the club will be to prevent their top players becoming unsettled by approaches from Premier League suitors.

McCarthy said: “There will be changes in the summer - players come and go - but the nucleus will be staying.

“It isn’t the end, it’s the start. We will re-group and come again. This is a young and developing side. If nurtured it will improve.”

Interesting comments but will be even more interesting to see how he acts them out.
Is getting rid of MM and bringing in an inexperienced P.I. as many people call for the right decision?Im not so sure.
One things remains though, we need centre halves and a CREATIVE central midfielder.
If MM goes, will FE stay?I think he will go whatever the case.

Brave words Mr Morgan, Brave words indeed.

But i fear you will not achieve this wjile ever Mick is in charge……
I was willing to given him the 3rd season he asked for but him NOT talking to the Nugget ( Fans ) after the match or even having the b@lls to walk round and applaud the remaining fans in the ground was the last straw for me… No more 190 round trip next season until Mick has left.

E&S - Would be great if you could find out the ” Real ” reason why did not applaud us !!

It seems to me that he is saying MM will stay. As far as I am concerned, if Morgan keeps Mick on, he has my backing!

I’m still bitterly disappointed, watching the empty parade yesterday after the match.
The walk back to the car, I reminisced the very walk I had a year ago to the day. Back to the car after we beat Leicester 4-1.

    What a different story?

Sorry but it has been rubbish all season and the supporters who want Mcarthy out are very much in the majority (not as so often has been wrongly reported, the minority)

It’s nothing personel against MM,he’s simply behind the times.Apart from this the Freddie Eastwood situation requires a thorough explanation, in my humble opinion.

Good luck to you and the future of our great club and fans.let’s get it right.

ok Morgan start making decisions get rid of muppet Mick and clipboard Oconnor and bring in a decent management team and back them for the future with a decent wad of cash. Get rid of McCarthys’ no hopers like Ward, Potter and Elliot, get rid of the old timers like Breen and Craddock. Let the new manager make a decision about Freddie if he doesn;t want him then lets use the money to fund new purchases. Lets sort the kids out and get a real assessment of their value and if they are any good (little bennett etc) then lets introdcue them into the squad. I have never been a supporter of MM and there are too many question marks over him to move the club forward (his favourites, his transfer activity, his tactics etc. We don’t want to get to next christmas and be drifting midtable again lets have a new manager and let Morgan say he is part of his long term plan to move the club forward and back to the premiership. Bye Bye Mick you are just not good enough to take this club forward

well you better get rid of mcarthy then..or in 12 months time you’ll be standing in the same place saying the same things all over again. you should have seen enough by now to know he’s not right for the club.

paul ince..one of the best captains both mancherster united and liverpool have ever had..or have you forgotten that?..there’s your beloved liverpool connection..use your influence and bring him in.

remember what a powerful driving force he was with both those great clubs and for england too..well he was the same here when he came..he’s proved beyond doubt he’s management material with maccelsfield and mk dons. get paul back and with the players available to him here..the top 6 would be a certainty.

his man management is first class, all his players respect him and try their best for him..hence his sucsess so far. mick can’t generate that respect and is often alienated from players because of behind the scenes bust ups. end of the day steve..it’s your club to do with as you please. but if the statement above is genuine..take the first step to achieving promotion next season by getting mick out and the guv’nor in!!

ONE PAUL INCE..THERE’S ONLY ONE PAUL INCE.

With the right investment, we shouldn’t have been having to aim for the play offs this season!

The general standard in the division is poor, and Wolves have achieved nothing more than mediocrity themselves this season.

Agree with Rob_Wolves, we need to sort the central defence out, find more creativity in midfield, and make the decision whether MM is the man to build the team spirit.

My opinion is that MM has not made good team selections this season, much to our cost, and his arrogance with certain individuals is quite bewildering. Time for a change Mr Morgan, unless you are content to keep up with the also rans!

Make no mistake, Mick will be here for the start of next season. In my opinion he deserves that chance. Mick made mistakes this season, but overall we definately have a better squad than this time last year. We need some investment over the summer, and hopefully Mick can spot some better centre backs than Darren Ward and Collins. I’ve seen posts on here saying that this season was worse than hoddles era, thats simply nonsense. Do you remember the apathy? The squad was full of overpaid aging players, finally we have a team of young and hungry players. Lets not throw away all the progress we’ve made in the last two years, stick with Mick for one more season. I truly believe he will be eager to prove himself all over again to the wolves fans who now doubt his ability.
I just hope Eastwood goes so we can put a stop to all this Freddy Freddy nonsense. He’s not the messiah.

I think Morgan simply has to sack Mick. This has been a crap season with some really dully uninspiring football. We will achieve nothing if he stays.

Come on Morgan watch back some of the dvd’s of our season I suggest the WBA game at our place for starters complete with Mick’s arrogant ridiculous sum up post game. Then do the only sane thing & give us a chance at a good season next time around.
We deserve better than the dross of this last year.

Give MM a damn chance the team is a young squad and wolves are building, look at Stoke for their last few season they ended up 7th and 8th etc. but they were patient and they got automatic promotion, they never rushed it! We need to be patient! Let MM build! And stop this thinking that it is a divine right as a wolves fan to be in the premiership, that’s what kills teams, the pressure from fans!!!!!!! There is no coincidence why wolves done so well last year when none of the fans expected wolves to achieve anything and this year when Steve Morgan took over with huge money and the expectation suddenly rose to huge pressure!!!!!!! ILL SAY IT ONCE AGAIN ITS NO COINCIDENCE AND GIVE MM A CHANCE!!!

  26. The Wolf said:

Besty, hes invested heavily with the likes of Darren Ward,Steven Elliot and Freddy Eastwood and they don’t get a sniff of getting into the team. You cannot blame Morgan for that, that is MM’s failings in the transfer market. That is why MM should be dismissed, can you honestly see MM establishing us in the premiership because i can’t.

It made we want to throw up seeing stubborn MM bringing Eastwood on when its 5 months too late ( no room for Fred at Cov was there Mick !?!) You’re a joke, man.
Mick stands by his merry band of ill looking misfits - the Keogh’s Ward’s Gibson’s Elliot’s Jarvis’ Collins etc Are you seriously trying to tell me these clowns are in the same frame as the Phillip’s Brunt’s Gera’s and Greenings of this world. Im sick of Wolves fans settling for second best - its not right. All season long Mick has given us the two fingers over the Freddy fallout - and wolves fans stand for it. Im reading posts from clappers stating Mick’s the man… Did you losers not attend the Stoke Palace Hull Burnley Watford Albion home games this season - we lost ‘em all. No guts - no glory !

I believe Mr Morgan wants to win the division next year. We will see what happens over players linked with other clubs. Will we be a feeder for Villa or Everton. I don’t think sacking a manager is good policy. Short terms bring short rewards. However I do think that MM’s type of football won’t bring joy in the Premiership even if we are promoted. And nothing’s guarenteed. Look at the clubs coming down.

    1. Go shopping with the ugly wife every saturday
    2. Sod off to the Bescot
    3. Come to the Molineux and get behind your team. Every minute of every match

You are so short-sighted that you think that we deserve to be there. If we had gone up it would have been Derby part two. We need 4 or 5 players and we have the funds and the set-up to do it.

You lot slag off everything. The announcement about the development of Molineux was greeted with sneers and jeers online by you mindless fools. Not “great - it’s going to be awesome” but “we’ll never fill it MM out”

Get this into your thick skulls - Mick will be here next season, so instead of moaning just support the club.

  44. Soutbankboinger said:

What did you expect him to say? It’ll be tough next year, attracting good players won’t be easy with QPR’s billionaires and the clubs with parachute money to tempt the best who’ll be prepared to play outside the prem. If Palace don’t go up, they’ll be a good side next year, and I think Forest are on the up. What is really needed is a great manager to make a team from good players. Mick McCarthy is not a great manager.

We’re all complaining that we only made 7th. It hurts me to say though that the quality of football we played didn’t even deserve that. This season, our quality has been mid table and no more.

McCarthy wouldn’t hack the premier if he got us up (remember Sunderlands 16 points!) and won’t play the sort of football that will get the players back on side.

INCE (MK DONS) or MARTINEZ (SWANSEA) are two young up and coming managers who could cut it at Molineux.

Buy - Two quality centre backs and a utility defender as back up
    - Creative attacking midfielder (Commons from Forest would be great)
    - One more quality striker

    Sell - Bothroyd,
    - Collins
    - Kyle (terminate loan)
    - Breen
    - both Wards
    - Potter
    - Gibson (terminate loan)
    - Elliott

Let the new manager make their mind up about Freddy. I’d like to still give him a chance

Another one who can talk the talk, but yet to prove he can walk the walk.

It’s not all about putting money into the club, it’s about getting the right manager who will use that money well, get the right players in and get the most of them.

I don’t think MM has done any of those well this season, even if he did do a great job the previous year.

Next year looks like being much more challenging as with due respect to those going up this year, they are hardly big guns.

Just look at the sides coming down (Blues, Reading or Fulham and Derby) and even those coming up i.e Forest, Swansea and maybe Leeds.

With sides like Sheff Utd back on form towards the end of the season, I can only see a shot at the play offs again at best unless there is pretty significant change.

ok me personally when ince signed for us i thought here we go again another oap down the wolves getting ready for his last pay day!
but how wrong was i he was superb a leader on the pitch and off it anyway certain people you know are cut out to be top,top managers. and for me ince had that, good talker, motivator, and more importantly a WINNER!
ince didnt get the job as we all know, but he kept macclesfield up after being something like 13 points behind, ok a poor double in football terms, but in his first big challenge he took the league 2 title and the johnstone paint trophy in his first full season in charge of a club after spending less on players than peterborough (darren ferguson done a good job buying conference players, maclean top goalscorer and best buddy with kightly from there grays athletic days together).
and i can see ince being a great boss, we all know that if he is successful he’ll get a big job man utd, inter milan (been promised when he has a few years behind him he WILL get the inter job because massimo morrati the inter milan president as said ince has that hunger, will to succeed in football and rates him highly as a person) but if he makes us great, good even ill be happy and would take him to inter milan myself!!
i know your an albion fan so ill throw this at you was you happy with mowbray when his name was linked with the job?? if yes you are a rare one then because all west brom fans i know didnt want him “who is he, a manager in scotland, i could pick a team to finish below rangers & celtic” etc.
ince didnt get the wolves job because moxey, the board said they couldnt take the risk of a manager with no experience trying to handle a squad that had lost most its 1st team squad (lescott, Kennedy, Seol, Cameron, etc) and then try to assemble a new squad of freebies, loanies and cheapies!
well we aint in a poor state, financially anyway and im sick of the tried and tested formula, taylor (thanks for youth setup though), hoddle, mccarthy.
so lets go for ince we aint made the play-offs this season, and we have a decent enough squad, whats the worse that can happen hey???
and if he’s good enough for massimo morrati then he’s good enough for me!!!
LET THE INCE REVOLUTION START NOW!!!!!!!!

Anyone asking for MM to go and bring in a new manager is crazy in my book.

Play-offs last year, just missed this. If we keep this team together, we surely can’t fail to go up automatically, and if we don’t then I think a change is the correct course of action.

What we needed this year was consistency, not a change in personel (agree about centre half’s actually) and not a change of tactics, just consistency.

We finished 11 points off top. Converting 4 draws into wins would have seen us go top, not a great stretch at all.

I’m for MM staying, always have been.

As I live hundreds of miles away from Wolves - I have only managed to see one live game this season - home v Southampton. So - I cannot comment with any authority as many of you fans will be able too. What I can say is that I used to go to Wolves games 30-40 a season. What I saw v Southampton was shocking. The spirit of the 80s team with Bull Mutch Dennison Cook Venus etc would have destroyed that side -if thats going forwards then I cant see it !! The plus points from that game tho were Freddy eastwood when he came on - loooked differnt class - and evebntually SEB exploded into life !! Lets just hope that it was a bad day in the office and things arent really that poor.

We have a better team than last season… Collins Breen Elliot Kyle, what the heck are you on ? A better team, in a weaker league scoring less goals and finishing lower down… I JUST DONT SEE IT.

Seb is the only saving grace for the idiot’s 2007-8 campaign. Morgan says we cannot fail again next season. You bet we will under this inflexible reign

mock the anti-mick brigade now, but you watch it turn downright ugly when we’re mid-table in December. ./

    Hello Boys and Girls.

Can I ask how one is supposed to take the positives from our current situation ?

Another season under Mccarthy. A man who has proven to be inflexible, stubborn and totally inept at man management.

The very real possibility that we will lose Kightly, Hennessesy and Eastwood whilst Breen Collins and co are all set to take up their positions. All this as we square up against the likes of Birmingham and Reading who, would undoubtedly fill the top two spots

I think in Morgan we have someone who has the ability and motivation can take the club forward, there is just no-way that is going to be a possibility under mccarthy.

We need change. We need it now.

  91. Derby Wolf said:

89 well said mate - brilliant ! LOL
Look boys and girls we really needed 2 centre halves at beginning of the season so what does he do / Brings in an ‘iffy’ one and spends in excess of £4million on strikers of which only ONE performed properly SEB. He has wasted money by the bucket load and you have to admit his favouritism and tactics should be in a Monty Python sketch.
As a manager MM listen to what Alan Sugar says - “You’re fired!”

  92. Dave said:

I agree that we need new players. The most important thing is to get more players who can take the pressure. Too many of the lads in the team can’t. Plus our set piece defence needs work. Plus, we need more pace in the team. Plus, the crowd need to be patient…

The thing is we need to win well next season to begin building for the premiership. Squeaking up, as WBA and Stoke, did shows just hoe much work they have to do. WBA (well done by the way) lost too many games and conceded too many goals and will have a tough time of it in the Premier league. They are not much better than Derby were last year. Stoke are not as good as Derby were and all the play off team will be utter cannon fodder against premiership pace. I think all three will go down next season.

If we’d gone up we would have had to have thrown a lot of money at it and hoped. Perhaps this may be for the best, we can build up our squad and then push on next summer.

My first buy would be Kevin Philips of WBA. He won’t have the legs for the Premier league but he’ll score us 20 next season. A two year contract would be a small price to pay. I can’t see us swallowing that much pride though!

  93. wolvestillidie said:

Doesn’t morgan understand with mcarthy u are no way going to be guaranteed promotion next season and even if we do go up with mcarthy we will come straight back down again. Mcarthy aint good enough get rid of him. He needs to go soon before its too late for eg to keep freddy.

    all you so called fans,
you keep spouting about paul ince 4 manager. how long will it take you to start saying get him out?
you did the same with dave jones, now mm and previous others, try giving the team a bit more support instead of BOO’S. NO manager has a chance with you lot of whingers, i’d be very supprised if NO 1 wanted the job, when they have to put up with continuous negativety, do us all a favour and turn boin boing, because you are no better than them

  96. Big Sy said:

OK, Let’s face some facts here…

    1) MM will be the manager next season, I don’t think that Morgan will sack him unless he has a hand picked replacement - and why would Ince leave the Macdons now he’s just got them up? And as for Allardyce, how many of you want us to be playing defensive long balls scrapping for 1-0 win’s like Bolton?

    2) Nothing will happen with player moves for at least 3-4 weeks as the majority of people involved with football clubs will be on a beach and until then it’s just paper talk.

    3) I agree that Eastwood should have played more, but he needs to go as his negative sulking attitude has been obvious to see from the sidelines, I can understand it and I think he’s been treated very badly but I think he was a post Billy Sharp panic buy and was never really in MM’s plans for the season - but he’s been a negative influence and will move to Coventry for £1.5m in the summer.

    4) Who cares what the hell Tesco Town do or have done? I couldn’t care less about any other football team than Wolves and would rather spend my time concentrating on us.

    5) Neil Collins should never pull the shirt on again! How many penalties did he concede!!

    6) If MM does stay he has to be given the whole of next season, we’ve sacked Turner, Taylor, McGhee, Lee and Jones early-mid season, and that season is a write off. If he stays we must back the team for the whole year.

    7) Losing McIndoe on the wing unsettled the side, Jarvis has the potential to be better but has had an injury hit season. If we can keep Kightly on the other wing and unleash them together we would be a whole different side.

    8) The promotion season was built on a basis of a powerful midfield supporting decent strikers - 2 flying wingers, Tough tackler and A BOX TO BOX CREATIVE PLAYER!!! Desperately need one to push the side forward rather than a couple of powder puffs who sit in front of the defence and pass the ball into danger just to get rid of it. We need to get back to what made us strong.

    9) Mick if you do stay, there are other players out there other than Irish ones who played for Sunderland - my advice hire some scouts to look somewhere else!

Apologies if I have ranted somewhat - just trying to say that we need to support the team whoever is in charge next year, we need to support the players (all the players and not boo them and call for replacements) and most importantly the team has to give the fans something to cheer about!!

    Out of Darkness….

is that right that mick didn’t applaud the fans well i’m glad i left just before the final whistle.this man has behaved apallingly for months now and treated the fans poorly who pay good money to see the team. don’t recall him acknowledging the fans for a while now seems to have a bit of a chip on his shoulder and has been behaving as if he couldn’t care less. steve you should get rid now not wait until 3 months into next season which is usually what happens after a poor start at wolves.get someone in who cares. never thought i’d say this but paul ince yes please!

  98. debigbadwolfman said:

    5. stuwolf. ive heard a rumour that mick never wanted to sign freddy but that it was the chairman who wanted him hence mm not playing him.seemed to put in some great throughballs and if i’m not mistaken set up the goal on sunday ,maybe it would have been a different story had he brought him on sooner.oh well the footballer will probably be sold to cov now and we’ll take the nail that is kevin kyle off their hands and freddy will probably punish us every time we face them.

    43. we’re not fickle, not idiots and not in the minority are you telling me you are happy with what you have seen this season ?you must be the idiot keep on happy clapping and handing your money over, thats if you ever bother to go to molineux.after having a season ticket for 14 years i think i and most of the other fans on here are entitled to our opinion when the manager makes such baffling decisions and tactics as mm has this season.not to mention the young players who played so well last season and haven’t had a look in this season.you talk as if the fans go to games just to abuse the team and the manager and are full of hate well its not hate its called passion,to want your team to win and do well not sit there clapping rubbish which is what mostly the football has been this season utter rubbish, thats my opinion

  100. TropicalHeathen said:

The fact is the fans have to support whatever Mr Morgan decides to do.
Obvioulsy booing our own players does not help at all, make the players want to give that little extra..booing does not inspire that.

It is time that Mr Morgan took a leaf out of Jeremy peace’s book. Take a long hard look at where you are, who is leading you and what assetts you have.

Wolves are a huge club - potentially a Midlans powerhouse with hugely fervent fans who care ONLY for the sucess of thier club. This season has been a bitter pill watching the restructured and revitalised Baggies make it back.
You need a new manager with a principal for GOOD football, a mna who can unite fans players and backroom in one cause.

Learn from Reading, Bolton, Portsmouth and maybe even Fulham. You cannot progress without leadership and harmony

You deserve to be back where you belong with STYLE!

Tell you what Morgan, why dont you s*d off and we’ll get another backer in, someone who will bring us a decent amanger, who will bring in good quality players and bring us the sort of really good team we havent had for 30 years.

Translated: Most of the crap I bought last year will stay and the better players I left on the sidelines will leave.
I said exactly the same thing last year as it sounded great to have a new start than dwell on the below average year I caused again.

We Baggies fans can see through it, why can’t you Wolves fans ? It is there in black and white.
