Motorists using a pay-and-display Black Country car park are being left baffled by £60 demands landing on their doormats.
Two drivers who regularly use the Moor Centre in Brierley Hill today told how they received fines.
This was despite having valid tickets. They say they fear others may be in the same position. Retired engineer John Phillips uses the car park several times a week but is reluctant to do so again after he was handed a £60 fine for allegedly not displaying a ticket. The 71-year-old was outraged by the demand.
He wrote to enforcement firm Excel Parking, sending a photocopy of the ticket he had purchased.
The Sheffield-based firm later withdrew the fine but is still asking for £10 from the pensioner to cover its administration costs.Mr Phillips, who lives in Chapel Street, Pensnett, says he is prepared to stand up and fight the demand because he claims he has done nothing wrong.
He said: “I am not going to pay for it because I don’t see why I should. I have always used the car park, long before it was a pay and display car park.
“I have arthritis and I can’t walk very far, which is why I use that car park. It has put me off using it as I don’t know whether the same thing will happen again.”
Pat Hickman said she also received notice of a £60 fine in the post after a visit to the car park.
The 67-year-old, who lives with husband Tony, aged 70, in Careless Green, Lye, said: “I had a ticket for two hours but when I knew I was going to be longer than that I went back and topped it up and got a new ticket.
“But then a letter arrived saying I had to pay £60 because my ticket had expired. I know there was plenty of time left on the ticket when I left. I think it is wrong that there are no signs up telling you that you are being filmed going on and off the car park.”
Mrs Hickman, who uses the car park six times a week, has sent photocopies of her ticket to Excel Parking but has yet to receive a response.
The company was today unavailable for comment.
