Albion celebrate while Wolves miss out
Thousands hope to see an official celebration in West Bromwich town - a plan backed by mayor Gurcharan Singh Sidhu after after yesterday’s 2-0 win against Queens Park Rangers. And they are urging club bosses to make their dream come true.Councillor Sidhu said: “I am absolutely delighted that West Bromwich Albion has won the championship. It is fantastic for the area and puts Sandwell on the map. I would love to see an open-top bus parade through the borough so that the supporters can say thank you to the players and management team for their efforts this season and they in turn can thank the fans for their tremendous support.” Blind Dave, who ran seven marathons across seven continents in seven days said: “A parade would be the perfect way to round everything off.”
Celebrities Frank Skinner and Adrian Chiles were among fans cheering the victory - many dressed as superheroes in honour of super striker Kevin Phillips.
The pair, pals through their mutual love of Albion, were dressed as Batman and sidekick Robin and cheered the side to victory alongside The Incredibles, Captain America and Wonder Woman
Adrian - a lifelong Baggies fans said today: “It was fantastic. I have to admit, I didn’t realise how much it would mean to actually win it until I saw them lifting the trophy. It brought a tear to the eye but, luckily, I was wearing a Batman mask, so nobody saw.”
“We were in the pub with Bob Taylor before the game and he was killing himself laughing and saying it’s Del Boy and Rodney,” he said.
The pundit said Tony Mowbray’s faith in an attractive footballing style proved him wrong. “I didn’t think we could get out of this division playing good football like that but I hold my hands up and credit to Tony for having the courage of his convictions.”
Yesterday’s match was won by two goals in the second half, from Kim Do-Heon, a substitute, and Chris Brunt. Queens Park Rangers were down to 10 men after having Martin Rowlands sent off in the first half for a reckless challenge on Jonathan Greening. Baggies manager Tony Mowbray believes the club has got what it takes to be a success in the Premier League.
