Walsall 2 Hartlepool 2

MooneyWalsall ended their season frustrated after a late goal denied them their first win in four games against Hartlepool at the Banks’s stadium this afternoon.

The match was Tommy Mooney’s last ever game in English football after 739 league appearances and it was only fitting that he should score .

Walsall opened the scoring with eight minutes gone when Taundry went on a run down the left and picked out Mooney whose instant control and pass set up Dobson who made no mistake with a neat finish into the top corner.

Mooney got his goal when Dobson returned the compliment six minutes later.

The midfielder’s right wing cross found Mooney unmarked near the edge of the penalty area and his low drive beat Lee Barrett in the Hartlepool goal to put the Saddlers two up.

Hartlepool who were also on a run of three consecutive league defeats got themselves back in it after 19 minutes when Humphreys left wing cross was allowed to reach Mackay at the far post and the striker finished the job from a narrow angle.

Hartlepool had the better of the second half and should have equalised towards the end when Mackay blazed over the bar but then scored with minutes to go.

Walsall fans vented their frustration at Chairman Jeff Bonser throughout the match with chants and banners asking him to resign.

Well done walsall on a good season .Today i was shocked at the disrespect the mijority of fans had for the players and other fans when they would’nt leave the pitch for the players to do a lap of honour. my friend waited in his wheelchair for 30 mins to see the players he paid to see all season but he could’nt because of the silly fans not getting off the pitch . Thanks for wrecking his season.

Spot on. The fans who invaded the pitch have every right to vent their frustration. But they should make their point, as if they didn’t during the game and get off the pitch.
Do they not think that some of us wanted to see the players. Do they not think that some of the players may have wanted to show their appreciation to the loyal supporters who have followed them this season through thick and thin. Thank for being so damn selfish guys.

Walsall deserve to go up next season even though i support the albion, walsall should not have sold scott dan and and the other defender, i think had you have not sold them you would have won back to back promotions

whats with everyone having ago about the supporters going on the pitch? when all said and done if it wasnt for jeff bonser u could have been seeing a lap of honour from players who earned back to back promotions or at the least a playoff place, and other supports have just as much right to vent their frustrations on the pitch as u had to sit and wait at the side? we’ve paid all season as well remember
