Tony Mowbray today ruled out sweeping changes to his promotion-winning Albion squad as he begins planning for the return to the Premier League.
The Baggies boss has started scouting potential summer transfer targets - including a trip to a match abroad on Thursday.
But he insists the close season will be about “freshening up” his squad and not revamping it.
“I don’t think I can sit here and put a number on it,” said Mowbray, who will speak to his current players about their futures early next week.
“We have got a few things to resolve with our current squad and I would suggest you need to freshen football teams up as we did last year.
“You need to rely on the core of your team but you need to freshen it up and that’s what we will try to do.”There is a misconception from my point of view that you have to go and change your team and that’s not the case.
“But at the same time I’m not naive enough to think that the same team can go on and do exceptionally well in the Premier League.
“I think the team needs adding too, needs help and needs an extra bit of strength and depth.
“I’m not envisaging taking an axe to the squad but I’m not naive enough to think that it doesn’t need help.”
Mowbray’s top priority will be resolving the futures of out-of-contract duo Kevin Phillips and Zoltan Gera, both of whom he is keen to keep.
He must also decide whether to improve the terms offer to defender Martin Albrechtsen, whose contract is also coming to a close.
The loans of Roman Bednar from Hearts and Luke Moore from Villa will become permanent for £2.5m and £3.5m respectively while Michal Danek and Kim Do-Heon look set to have their loans extended for the first half of next season.
But Bostjan Cesar is likely to return to Marseille, while Shelton Martis, Tininho and Bartosz Slusarski could be made available to make room for new faces.
Albion will receive £8m from neighbours Villa for Curtis Davies in addition to more the £40 from Premier League broadcast rights, but Mowbray is not planning eight-figure swoops for players.
He said: “It’s a pretty open environment at the training ground.
“The chairman is a very accessible man who is always there to talk to and we have had chats and are in full agreement.
“There is a danger of headline figures being put around.
“People think you will have £50m to spend because that’s what you earn but that’s not always the case.
“I would like to think we are realistic about the investment that is required and the chairman is very accomodating but I understand we won’t be going out and spending £10m or £20m on a footballer.
“We will try to recruit the right players to help the team we’ve got and if the right ones come along at the right price I’m sure we will do that.”

Fact - West Brom are promoted
Fact - Dingles are hoping for other teams to screw up so they can just get into the play offs

Wolves young squad with a new stadium p-lan (even though molineux is still probabaly in the top 10 stadiums in the country) still a chance of wembley and promotion this season, albion have to look forward to losing all their best players and getting hammered in the prem in their tin shed of a stadium the long term future is gold super stevie morgan!
I hear Mad Mick feels the same,no need for a clearout at wulfs.’After all’,he said ‘we’ve struggled and under achieved for so many years, why rock the boat? The fans wouldn’t know quality if it bit ‘em on the nose,so let’s just keep ‘em in the dark’.
