Wolves blog: Down to the wire

wolvesbadge.jpg

I’m hoping that this doesn’t turn out to be my penultimate blog and that our season is still alive and kicking after Sunday’s game against Plymouth, writes blogger Nathan Lloyd.

I went through all the permutations in my Monday blog about Blackpool versus Watford and Palace versus Barnsley.  Everybody probably has their own predictions on what will happen Sunday.  I personally think that a win against the Pilgrims will be enough and that Blackpool will beat a fading Watford team.

Another possible scenario, pointed out my neighbour Martin, is that Blackpool and Watford will draw, meaning we will have to beat Plymouth by 3 clear goals to overhaul Watford’s superior goal difference and get into the top 6.  I certainly don’t expect any favours from Palace.

Who knows?  At least there is a bit of excitement left in a season which has at times been akin to watching paint dry (in the dark!)

At this point in the season I fully expected to be writing all about how the season never got going, about some of the dreadful signings, the unfortunate injuries to Kightly and Jarvis, the players being constantly played out of position, the homegrown talent being squandered and sent to play elsewhere, Mick’s lack of respect for the fans, Mick’s blind favouritism of players he has bought in a previous life, Mick recruiting more strikers than Arthur Scargill, the list goes on and on.

And the whole Freddy thing has just become so boring.  His face doesn’t fit for some reason and if he can be sold in a couple of weeks so that the club nearly breaks even, then great.  I’m past caring to be honest.  I know in the past that I and many others have argued quite ferociously for his inclusion in the first 11.

It hasn’t happened and Freddy will go in the summer to hopefully find success elsewhere.  His mere name has become an unwanted distraction these past weeks.  Some fans have stupidly booed when he doesn’t get to come on from the bench and other players do.  I don’t want to hear that and I’m sure the players out there in gold and black are just as disgusted by the behaviour from some of their own fans.  Anyway, see, I mention the name ‘Freddy’ and I start rambling.

I’ve written over 60 blogs this season, some received more favorably than others.  I’ve come in for criticism, abuse, unwanted spell checking and sometimes even the odd compliment.  My season summary blog can wait though; the timing isn’t right whilst we are still in with a slim chance of promotion.

What do fans want at the end of this season?  I have spoken to some who bizarrely would prefer that we don’t get into the play-offs in the vain hope that it might spell the end for Mick and some fans that do want a top 6 finish.  Personally, I would rather have a battling season at the bottom end of the Premiership any day of the week than have to sit through some of the bile I’ve witnessed this season against the likes of Barnsley, Burnley and Hull.  I always want my club to win and I’ll never share the sinister agenda of some who hope for failure in order to relieve Mick McCarthy from his managerial duties.

Other so called big teams such as Leicester and Southampton are in real danger of dropping down to the third tier of English football this weekend.  For those with short memories, when Glenda (Hoddle) left the club in a right mess and MM came in, it was fully expected that we could well be battling to stay in the Championship last season.  As it is, he almost became a victim of his own success by grabbing a top six finish.

Let’s just focus on Sunday for now.  A full house of passionate Wolves fans roaring the team to success is what’s needed.  The shameful boo-boys need to either stay away or at least stop the idiotic Freddy chants when Wolves concede so much as a thrown-in.  Sunday represents one final bite of the cherry and this young Wolves side need to hear that we are behind them from the kick-off.

Good luck to the boys and Happy Birthday to my Dad, Alan, who has a big birthday on Sunday.  Let’s hope we both have reason to celebrate!

Good blog Nathan. Agree that recriminations can wait until the season is over. Let’s hope it ends with success in the play-offs.

The Freddy saga will run until he is hopefully sold and probably certain people will still pine for him when he’s gone. But onwards and upwards I say.

Booing players is disgraceful and negative and it’s little wonder they’ve struggled at home. I wonder if people will boo Neil Collins or Stephen Ward if they score the goals that get us in the play-offs on Sunday?

A Little bit of positivity goes a long way and while there’s life in the season there’s hope.

The shameful boo-boys need to stay away.

sorry mate but at that point you lost my interest i’m afraid. they pay their money like everyone else..their entitled to their opinion like everyone else..and they are certainly as passionate as anyone else..maybe more so as displayed by their anger.

pro mcarthy fans are a very small minority at molineux these days nathan..and if as you suggest, the boo boys stayed away..i bet molineux would even be half full on sunday. i doubt moxey or steve morgan would pat you on the back for asking paying customers to stay away either.

but your a fellow supporter and i respect your views and opinions, please try and do the same nathan. we all want wolves in the premier..of course we do..it just ain’t gonna happen this season..or any other season as long as thick mick remains in charge..he has to go.

RITE..SEE YA SUNDAY FELLA..LET’S HOPE IT’S A GOOD UN’ AND WE GET THE RIGHT RESULT..MCARTHY OUT!!

Hi Nath, i can sense the despair and tension in your blog.
I also feel that if you win on Sunday (possibly by 3 goals) that you will finish in the top six.
I am also interested in what the reaction will be of the Wolves fans if you fail to make the playoffs.
Good luck, and wish your dad a happy birthday.
    See you soon.

trouble is wolverine that coliins is more likely to give away the penalty that prevents us getting to the premier league and ward couldn’t hit a barn door with a stick - hence the anti mick feelings cos he keeps sticking with these players when better were available to him (and i do not mean just freddy but Rosa, Davies, DJ, Gleeson, etc.)

However, - never boo players and come on the Wolves!

Good blog Nathan. Agree that the recriminations can wait until (hopefully) after the play-offs. It’s now come down to the last game and whatever happens in the other games we have to beat Plymouth by as large a margin as possible or the season is over. Of the two games that we are dependent on, I just can’t see Palace slipping up against Burnley. However Watford are not going to have an easy ride at Blackpool and that’s where our hope lies.
Let’s get behind the team 100% on Sunday. I know I’ll probably get people coming back at me saying that they always do give 100% but to those I say go that extra mile then and make the Moll a cauldron of noise on Sunday and put the fear of God into the Plymouth players.

    Come on you Wolves !!!

Have just seen the pictures of the new kit on the Wolves site. The pictures that were available the other day did not do the home kit any justice - it’s awesome !! Still got my doubts about new kits every year though. I know you don’t have to buy a new shirt every time but I think ardent fans will any way !

Great blog nathan but I have to agree with Barmy. There are extremely passionate fans out there who are sick and tired of the inept tactics that mick has employed over the course of the season. Frustrations boil over to booing, and whilst I have never booed myself, I cannot see the boo boys laying off whilst we have this moron in charge.

Morning. I did give the boo-boys a choice! My point is that the team and yes, even the manager needs our support on Sunday. I think anybody who has stumbled across some of my previous blogs knows that my stance on Mick changed after the turn of the year. Some even accused me of being fickle, ah the memories. Up to that point I was fully supportive in his methods of mixing homegrown talent with some exciting youth.

Unfortunately I have been bemused by his tactics, his team selections, his inability to shore up the creaking central defence with any real quality, etc etc.

But I’m putting all that aside to fully get behind the team on Sunday and that’s my point about the boo-boys. Perhaps saying they should stay away is a bit harsh, but how detrimental is it when they start the Freddy chants or boo Mick’s substitution choices?

Southbank, let me know if you fancy a pre-match drink and we can have a philosophical discussion… or talk about football.

    Cheers.

Hi Nathan , another good blog and one I am sure that the greater number of wolves fans will agree with . While I can understand , and accept to a degree , the feelings of fans who say that their booing is an equal sign of passion to those who cheer or merely tolerate , I believe that during the match itself we should cheer our team on and reserve any booing , if appropriate , to the end of the game . MM is still the manager and will continue to make the decisions until he is replaced by the board and that may even be at the end of this season . The football played throughout the year has on the whole been awful and therefore the paying fans MUST have the right too show their feelings toward the people who make the decisions in the hope that this will encourage change where necessary . I also passionately want us to make the play offs and get to the premiership but do look at the facts beyond sunday’s game . If Woves win and other results go our way we will finish the seaon with 70 points . We could then go on to win the final and get to the promised land with far less points in this poor division than a great number of current premiership clubs have already got from fewer games . The investment required to at least stay there , as shown by Sunderland ( sorry for having to mention them ), will be incredible . We must all then ask ourselves if MM is the right man to be in charge of that investment . I already have my opinion and I wonder what the MAJORITY also think .
Whatever else I will be cheering the lads on all through the match on sunday and keeping everything crossed that the other results favour us .

The only reason we get the Freddy chants is because of frustration with Mccarthy. Freddy certainly hasn’t done anything to warrant a starting place in the team all season. I won’t be sorry to see the back of him.

However, Collins and Elliot must be two of the most dire players to pull on wolves shirts in recent years - booing mccarthy’s decisions to play sub-standard players is totally justified. He could quite easily have bought a dencent centre half in the transfer window and if he had we’d be at least 5 or 6 points better off. Collins in particular is a liability.

I am worried that I might be starting to *hate* this manager, because of what he has done to the club this season. I have never felt this bad about a Wolves manager before, maybe it’s his arrogance and insulting us, the fans, that does it.

    raffo - oh dear mate!

Thats the way to get the ‘clappes’ all wound up, for sure!

Better to dress it all up nicely with good grammar and spelling, no ‘caps lock’ helps!

Anyway, despite being a terribly nice chap with a list of footballing credentials long enough to impress any FA board member, Mick McCarthy has had some shocking bad luck this season.

The injuries to his wingers and his young talent off gaining experience elsewhere meant he had to play everyone out of position. But being a gruff sort of chap he soon got the grafters onto the pitch and jolly well they did too!

His disciplinary record has been outstanding this season. We don’t want those lazy so and sos’ on the pitch even if they are talented and might lead to the odd victory. No, better they stay in the stands and make way for the shift workers until they learn to train harder!

Anyway lets all remember how jolly lucky we are to have a management team with such a powerful vision. Next season should be blistering once Mr M. has been handed the transfer kitty from the sale of our latest stars. And the rest of our young chaps will have the experience of this season to draw on as they ’steam roll’ their way to the premiership!

    Toodle pip everyone!

I think with the pressure on the teams at the top, fighting for the 5th and 6th place then I believe Watford are the most likely to falter. The Wolves team will be under pressure to get the win and also very nervous for the first 15 mins of the game. When I remember the Season we stayed up and the news filtering through of what the other teams were doing, there were anxious moments but the fans kept on believing and supporting the team. I say to the Wolves fans for this Sunday, you are the main players because you can help/influence to make or detroy your Season, keep the faith until the 90th minute because things will be changing right up until those last few seconds. Become nervous and impatient and the players will feel it, best advise is to have a total news blackout at the ground and don’t listen to the other results. Good Luck.

leaves the door wide open for your good selves.

    Wolves to beat Plymouth,
but the atmosphere must be right, people pay their money, so they takes their choice.

I, along with yourselves expected Wolves to be slugging it out at the top this term, and frustratingly it has not happened,
and from an outsider looking in, the main reason for this is your managers often bizarre
    team selections,
so i do have an empathy with those fans who let their feelings and frustrations spill over,
but in my view any sort of booing, aimed at whoever, during a game, can ONLY have a negative effect.

IF Wolves fail in their quest on Sunday,

dont mean to sound negative but i think palace and watford both have enough to get a result when it really matters. but really this team is not ready to step up anyway. i think mick McCarthy as to go really because he thought he could do no wrong after last season which to be fair any manager coming in would have made an improvement, McCarthy was just refreshing from what was served up by the pompus hoddle. the way Mick has handled situations this season has been shocking playing players out of position the loaning out of our best defender, not stregnthening the defence, the last straw for me would be if he signs kevin kyle on a perminent deal. has for the freddy debate…4 goals in 4 games for wolves was a great start and i’m sure franksie on wm who i heard knocking freddy the other week would have been coming out with comments like “its ready, steady, freddy he does it again!” so all was good but mick drops him in what i think was an attempt to keep freddys feet on the ground(back fired like a 1979 austin allegro!). people forget that he is young and thrives on confidence so i think all the freddy chants are the fans trying to breathe some confidence back into freddy that as been so wrongly knocked out of him by mick McCarthy. if Mick thinks no player is bigger than Mick McCarthy….Mick McCarty is not bigger than Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Don’t know if anyone else has the same conundrum as me but last night I was having a discussion with my old man (one of the more reasoned baggies fans) about our chances of promotion. I would absolutely love to see us back there next season playing against the big boys and playing the old enemy in the top flight but at the same time I hate the thought of being the whipping boys for every other club in the prem. IF we get promoted I cannot see any other scenario other than being the whipping boys whilst muppet is in charge and that really stings so would it better to spend ‘08/’09 in the chumpionship establishing new players in our glaringly obvious weak spots…any thoughts?

    59. I tend to agree with you there. West Brom have built there team up over a couple of seasons and are now ready to go up. If we were to go up this year Morgan would need to throw a lot of money at the club in order to give us even a chance of staying up.

Thanks for your best wishes, my dad will have read that, cheers.

I can’t see McCarthy doing it either, but is all we have at the moment. I’m not sure that he will be replaced next season either.

Just wanted to say a quick thanks to Nathan for writing the blogs this season. Enjoyed the majority of them and it has certainly sparked some lively debate.

Well said Nathan, you’ve nicely summarised the season and how most Wolves fans feel. It must be the lowest ever total of points to get automatic promotion - we missed out there. Sunday could be nerve wracking.

I would just like to say how disgusted i was when Mick McCarthy didn’t do the lap of honour at the end of todays game with the rest of the team. The least he could of done is clap the supporters ( the people that pay his wages ) and gain support but instead i bet there is even more people turning against him so i think its time for him to go and for us to get someone in that knows how to spend money properly.

MM is not the answer although I fear he`ll still be there next year(Morgan apparently rates him!)
If Freddy goes then I can`t see MM ever gaining the support & respect of the majority of Wolves fans as they can see F E `s skill & potential if managed correctly!Saturdays cameo performance confirms that.
In 25 mins. Freddy changed the game & set up the winner.
Who`s to say whether given 90 minutes he wouldn`t have set up or scored the extra 2 goals we needed! Then multiply that by the times he`s been left out or not started & I guarantee we would have at least gained auto. promotion & probably been Champs.
Still—I suppose MMMM`s ego is more important than WW`s promotion!!!
    Ince is the guvnor!!!

    Up the Wolves….!
