Thirty-six down, two to go. It’s our last home game of the season, and the pressure is on to sign off with a victory, writes blogger Gregg Williams.
If we win we will go into fifth place, and all the pressure will be on Everton to take it back when they face Arsenal on Sunday.
I’m pretty worried to hear that Olof Mellberg may not be fit to play, and not just because it will deny us the chance to say a fond farewell to the big Swede.
The fear is that without him at right back we could struggle, and how sick I am to be talking about us having that problem. With any luck he will make it through the remaining two games and we can then look to sign someone who can solve the issue for good. I would love to never have to use the phrase ‘right back’ again after this season.
As for the game itself, I do feel like we have been here before, and it would be typical of Villa to slip up and fail to beat Wigan when it is so important that we win.
Having said that, Martin O’Neill has built a team that has far more belief and conviction than the sides I have been used to watching over the last 10 years, and the hope is that the team can help to put the bad memories of past failings behind us on Saturday.
I am dreaming of those big European nights returning to Villa Park, and how dearly I would love another tie such as Athletico Madrid or Inter Milan. It isn’t exactly in our hands, we will need Everton to drop points, however that is more likely to happen if we can beat Wigan and force them to have to attack Arsenal on Sunday.
Come on lads, don’t let us down this time.
