A teenager who drove an uninsured car into a Willenhall father narrowly missing his young daughter as they walked on a pub car park has escaped being locked up.
Richard Keay took the full impact after a Ford Mondeo careered into him but managed to push his two-year-old daughter Ellie out of the way. The driver of the car, 18-year-old Mark Shepherd, appeared at Walsall Youth Court today.
He had already admitted charges of failing to stop after an accident, failing to report his details as soon as practicable, driving without a licence and having no insurance when he appeared at a previous court hearing.
He had also pleaded guilty to criminal damage after smashing up a stereo system with a baseball bat at his Essington Road, New Invention, Willenhall home on March 19.
Miss Stacey Turner, prosecuting, told the court Mr Keay was hit by the car which mounted the pavement as he was walking on the car park of the Whimsey Inn, on High Road at around 1pm on April 5.
She said he was able to push his daughter out of the way before the car struck him.
“As they reached the entrance to a pub car park he heard the sound of a screeching car behind him,” she said. “He turned round and saw a blue car coming towards them and pushed his daughter out of the way, but the car struck him.”
Mr Keay had to be rushed to Walsall Manor Hospital. Police arrested Shepherd shortly after and charged him with the offences. Miss Turner also said Shepherd had used a baseball bat to smash the hi-fi and punch holes into a wall at his home on March 19.
He was handed a four month prison sentence suspended for 12 months and banned from driving for 12 months.
He was told to pay Mr Keay compensation of £500. He was also told to pay £400 compensation to the other vehicle which was damaged and £80 compensation for the damaged stereo.
