Fifteen injured in bus smash

wd2767978bus-crashes-into.jpgFifteen people have been injured after a bus smashed into cars before crashing into a house in the Lozells area of Birmingham.

Nine adults and four children were amongst those injured in the crash at around 5pm last night in Gerrard Street, near to the junction with Carpenters Road.

A single-decker Travel West Midlands bus, was travelling towards Hockley Circus, when it hit with a Peugeot car travelling in the opposite direction.

The bus then hit a parked Mercedes and a Volvo, before hitting the home in Gerrard Street.

The ambulance service sent a total of six ambulances, a rapid response vehicle, an incident support manager, two divisional managers and two paramedics with specialist training to the scene.

They were joined by fire crews and police investigators.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “The exact details of what happened are not clear, however, a West Midlands Travel single decker bus was in collision with a number of cars before crossing a pavement, a grass front garden before colliding with a two story terraced house.

“Ambulance crews treated a total of 13 passengers from the bus; nine adults and four children.

“Despite the damage to the house the bus driver, a woman, was able to get out of the vehicle along with all of the passengers.

“Thankfully they had suffered nothing worse than cuts bumps and bruises. As a precaution they were all taken to hospital.

“The six with most minor injuries were taken in a police crew van to Sandwell Hospital.”

Other patients were taken to City Hospital, Birmingham Children’s, Birmingham Women’s, and Selly Oak Hospital.

He added:““An elderly gentleman who was in the house was also taken to hospital after the shock of the crash caused an existing medical condition to flair up.

He was treated at the scene by ambulance crews.

Once his condition was stabilised he was taken to hospital as a precaution.

Two residential flats in the building were evacuated and the road was closed until 11pm while structural engineers assessed the damage.

Police are investigating the collision and anyone with information should contact officers at Thornhill Road on 0845 113 5000.
