Pupils at a school had the chance to meet their football heroes at the official opening of their new £120,000 all weather sports pitch.

Saddlers stars Anthony Gerrard and Mark Bradley were invited to the launch of the game area at Lower Farm Primary in Bloxwich, Walsall.

The school, which is based in Bakewell Close, has funded the all weather pitch to ensure youngsters can enjoy outdoor sports even if the ground is wet.

The existing field has suffered from being waterlogged for days after heavy rain, making it hard for youngsters to enjoy outside games. It can now be used by the school’s 430 pupils for a selection of sports such football, cricket, hockey and netball and also at playtimes.

Deputy headteacher Ivor Bolton said that the project had been supported by school governors, and the pupils enjoyed the chance to meet Walsall players and also get their autographs.

Lower Farm Primary head Joe Baker added: “This is a great facility for the children and we are really pleased to provide it.”
