Freddy picked to face Walsall

freddy.jpgWolves fans get the rare chance to see Freddy Eastwood in action tonight – in what will most likely be a farewell appearance.

Eastwood is in a strong starting line up being sent by Mick McCarthy to Walsall’s Banks’s Stadium for the Darren Wrack testimonial clash.

The £1.5m striker, the subject of so much anguish and debate among Wolves fans, has become an even bigger by-stander in recent weeks having failed to make the substitutes bench for two of the last three games and been unused in the other.

It’s all-but admitted by McCarthy that Eastwood will be up for transfer in the summer and that Coventry, having been blocked from signing him on loan before the March deadline, will be back in the queue.

He will play in a side that is not without other major points of interest for Wolves fans as youngsters Mark Little and Daniel Jones, back from their experience-gleaning excursions to Northampton, don the gold and black again.

And there will be a chance to see another of the Molineux Academy’s much-talked about proteges Elliott Bennett, who also gets the chance to display his potential.

In a show of support for Wrack, McCarthy is taking along the many of his senior squad who could get a run out from the substitutes bench.

“Anyone who gets a testimonial these days must be a fantastic servant to a club and it is a pleasure to take a team along tonight,” says McCarthy.

Wolves starting line-up: Stack, Little, D Jones, Neill Collins, Darren Ward, Elliott Bennett, Potter, Gibson, Stephen Ward, Eastwood, Elliott.

Will we ever know what Freddy did to fall out of favour? If he’d been given a run would we be in Albions place now? We’ll never know.Mick’s got to go now anyway cos if Freddy is that bad why did he buy him in the first place? My gaffer would sack me if I wasted 1 1/2m million of his money.

Would be a good idea to leave McCarthy at Walsall!

He could also keep all these players with him:

Stack, Neill Collins, Darren Ward, Potter, Gibson, Stephen Ward, Elliot and Breen.

And Jez Moxey could team up as well, him and Bonsor would be like two peas in a pod!

Win, win situation for everybody. Him and those players would be fantastic for Walsall and we get rid with one clean sweep!

    Perfect!

    9. I hate to say it but you made a good point, there where alot of pem clubs interested in Freddy at one point, but his reputation put them of. Mick took a gamble on him, and it didn’t pay off, simple as. I am glad on some of his other gambles though, they’ve been somewhat more successful

I’m just wondering what the E&S will write about when he does leave, and whether they’ll put the giant spoon down that they’ve been using all seaon

Freddy may be 2,000 minutes without a goal, but if he was given a fair crack, he’d score more then Keogh.

A final insult by MM to Freddie. Mr Eastwood where ever you go you will be appreicated by that club. We are stuck with MM and his muppets. Its going to be the muppet show next season. This is an absolute disgrace that a Manager buys a player and expects him to run around like an idiot i.e stephen ward or elliott putting a shift in. Instead he leaves him on the bench, in the stand etc. Why has he wasted £1.5M? Come on you pro MM lovers give us a reason? He spends money on D.Ward who is useless, money on N. Collins who is useless, Spends money on Elliott who is useless, S. Ward “useless” Breen has not got the legs anymore, fisty cuffs with his general aint great neither. MM best buys are Ebanks, and Kites. So overall MM buys have been shocking! What will he do next season? I hope Morgan sacks him, but my fear is that we are stuck with him for another season!

  16. Molly Knew Mick said:

    Well said Abdonwolf!

Saw Mowbray on tv last night. What a contrast! The team play with consistently good style and he talks well!

MM’s team is wholly inconsistent whereas by comparison, he is consistent in talking rubbish!

At the beginning of the season, the Top 2 was the right target and Freddy was the key signing he was looking to build his team around!

It’s all gone pear-shaped since Watford equalised on Day 1 and apart from the occasional spark of excitement, it’s been painful from start to finish!

If Sven ain’t good enough for Man City, what can you say about Mick?!

  17. wolveswolves said:

Disgrace, he’ll move to Coventry and get 20+ goals next year.

And people wonder why we call Mick Thick

  18. GW said:

Eastwood hasn’t fitted in, he isn’t that good and the sooner he is gone the sooner the thick fans we have can find something else to concentrate on other than the actual football.

  19. wolfmeister said:

Eastwood is not or ever was the messiah. He was bought as a panic buy when we didn’t get Sharp. His work rate was always poor. Yes he is a good individual talent.
Obviously something has gone on behind the scenes like it always does.We will obviously never know e.g Why was Ince out couple of years ago for weeks upon weeks with a ingroing toenail!(mmm!)

Is it just me, or is it just slightly insane to be playing this game a few days before our biggest game of the season?

I know the 11 picked are all fringe players (including Fred), but even so, I would have waited until the season concluded before playing any testimonal games.

Although, looking at the team, if Potter and Gibson get injured, where does that leave us on Sunday?

  24. wath wanderer said:

Well GW if I’m thick then you had better explain how someone who was player of the month in August and scoring goals, then bang all of a sudden for no explicable reason he becomes a bit part player and you and others like you have the audacity to rate him as not that good. So how come that you can reach that assumption on so little first team appearances??

Not being a braindead South Banker I am not sure if I am qualified to comment on this story ?

Freddy Eastwood has been shamefully treated by our Club and in particular our current Manager for the last nine months.

I can only hope that if and when Eastwood does move on to another club that our much derided Mr Moxey ensures that there is a sell-on clause in the Sale of him to wherever he finds a new club.

I have a strong feeling that this fiasco will haunt us again next season when Freddy is a regular scorer for another Championship side.

Of course it is entirely possible that he will play regularly for us next season and that the stubborn Yorkshire man who promised so much is no longer part of the equation !

GW & Adie well said. Feddie has not been good enough to get a starting position, end of story.

I rather have SEB in my side any day.

MM is building a side that will not only get us promoted, (albeit maybe not this season) but will also help us compete in the Premiership. However they are still young and need time.

Unfortunately some people and I sure you KNOW WHO YOU ARE, can’t quite work that out.

  38. GW said:

Why don’t people get behind Ebanks Blake instead, a goalscorer worthy of wearing the shirt and try to get over Freddie, the man who hasn’t scored a goal in over 2000 minutes on the pitch?

    Laughable.

  39. Dave said:

As a brain dead south banker, with a masters degree and a very successful career, I’d like to ask GW if he thinks that a businessman like Morgan will look kindly on a Manager who buys an asset for £1.5m, then does nothing with it.

The only scenario that should see MM still employed by Wolves is us making the play offs and selling Freddy for what we paid for him. Even then I don’t think he has a long term future, unlike Freddy who will be a success at his next club and will haunt us when he plays against us (especially as he will know the weaknesses of our ageing central defence like no other).

  40. abdonwolf said:

    35. SuperMick says…about CAPS!

“its doesnt add extra emphasis to your point, infact im more likely to ignore it”

Are you sure about that? You could use a few capitals in your sentence though!

Anyway, how can you get ’super’ and ‘Mick’ into the same word? NO!

Surly it’s a typo, it should read:

    SufferMick or ScupperMick shouldn’t it?

  41. Mozzawolves said:

MM has his pals yes, but can anyone say that under the situation of last season and the building work he has done this season, that he has been a terible manager? We as a club don’t have the strength in depth, may be that’s MM fault, but to want him sacked is just stupid!!!

We all have our views which is fair enough, but you are not seriously telling Mick is worse than Mark McGee, Colin Lee, Glen Twaddle?

We need to have a settled club just for a few years, I think one more season under Mick may make all the difference.

I could be wrong, which sometimes happens, but I would rather see Mick there next season than an ex-Liverpool player who has never done anything, which is the most likely thing to happen under Mr Morgan. Who wants Roy Evans, Sammy Lee, Gerrad Houlier????

    Keep the faith!!

    South Bank Middle Bit.

It’s just one of those transfers that hasn’t worked out. It doesn’t make Mick thick, just one of those things. Not all transfers work out, happens at every club and to every manager. There seems to be a group hysteria that has been fed by the constant leading headlines and articles published by the E&S. Mick is not thick and Freddy is not the messiah.
This article is a perfect example, I bet this will not be his farewell game, Mick could just be giving him some valuble match time, keep him sharp. But I suppose the truth just gets in the way of good copy.

  43. S.E said:

Same old crap about Eastwood again.
“Never given a chance”. “treated bad by McCarthy” - what a lot of rubbísh.
Eastwood has been treated better than most players would with the same performance, and has got more chances than any other non-scoring striker in Wolves history. Hasnt scored in his last 31 games for Wolves. Hasnt scored in any reserve game for Wolves (3 or 4). Refuse to get in the box (where was he when Henry scored against Charlton?. Why did he get the ball before he set up Keogh for the goal against QPR?).
I still cant understand how a bunch of so called supporters can back a player who thinks he is bigger than the club. It is so obvious these people are brainwashed, down know anything about football, or are in love with Freddy more than Wolves.

  50. Molly Knew Mick said:

Of course Freddie has not done himself justice but the point is whether he’s been treated fairly in comparison with, say, Stephen Ward - “my best buy ever” who kept getting picked even though he was out of position, was too slow and equally failed to score any goals!

If you buy someone as your key player, there’s a presumption that he will be treated fairly and given chances to prove himself. I don’t know whether he’s a good buy or a bad one and he may be overrated but it is a further example of Mick saying one thing and his actions showing something completely different!

  51. Spirite Wolf said:

GW & Supermick have you been to most games this season? I’m not a Freddy fan because i haven’t seen him play enough but are you trying to tell me that Collins, Elliot, Kyle, Ward, Gibson and Potter all players who could not get in their respective squads are the players to take us forward. I admit weve played better the last 8 games but do you not think that other teams will strenghten. Basically we need QUALITY. You guy’s have been sucked in to some Wolves propaganda.

Our fans are the problem - not the manager. Having so many managers over the years proves it! Try getting behind the team and not booing after 5 minutes and they might have a chance - dare I say - like they do down the road??

I noticed Wolves fans raving on about Graham Turner, Graham Taylor and Dave Jones all managers we’ve sacked because the “fans” thought it was time to go. Good on you Moxey stay with McCarthy, keep recruiting the young, hungry kids ( with the odd experienced player), and push on. Hopefully those idiots on here will be made to eat there words this time next year. Why is it’s the same people commenting here while games are going on - why aren’t you there supporting the team.?

Sorry you were never given the chance to show us what you could do. I myself am undecided, but know that any player needs an extended run with confidence to perform, given that, then everyone would have been able to make an informed opinion, as it stands you have given us plenty to discuss.

I think FE started very good but he has just sometimes been lazy. Against Charlton Kevin Kyle sped past FE to deliver that cross for Karl Henry to score. I have respect for him but i have more respect for Andy Keogh and SEBs partnership which could possibly be the best in years. AK has hit the goals since SEB came. Mick is building a very strong team but they are still young so give them some time. MM said he wanted 3 years so give him the 3 years and i think in the next 3 years Mick will have established a premiership team. In Mick We Trust.

Mick said it was a 3yr plan and it looks that way to me - he has built a decent squad and has got down to the last couple of positions to fill. Kightly, Jarvis, SEB, Keogh, Olofinjana, Henry, Foley and Hennessey are great talents and they all love the club, and we have plenty of long contracts and money to keep them here! Mick has recognised the need for CBs - with that recent trialist and Berra. The future looks promising to me, am i the only one??! Get behind the team, its only going to get better!

Well he aint S.E.B Is twice the player freddie is and the sooner he gets out the team the better. He unsettles them as when he gets the ball he tryes too hard to please and loses it 95% of the time and then the players wont pass it to him (Bristol was 1 game that happened)

Ever thought of getting your facts straight first before accusing fans who know more than you of being ‘idiots’.
Graham Turner, Graham Taylor & Dave Jones were the 3 managers that the majority of fans WANTED to keep. McGee & Hoddle were the ones most fans wanted gone (although personally I thought McGee was doing OK)

If you remember back to Graham Turners days he was hugely popular and it took many seasons of stagnation before some fans got on his back. Out of loyalty for his achievements the majority of fans publically, & even violently, supported him against any critics. Remember the reversible Turner must go/must stay badges?

Dave Jones got us up & because he didn’t get the greatest of starts the first season back in the Championship Sir Jack & Moxey fired him…long before fans were critical. Their lack of funding for him in the Premiership caused friction between him & them…but it had nothing to do with fan pressure.

    Good luck to Freddy.
Has not fitted in but has a touch that a few others havent, I would have liked to see if he and SEB could have worked together, but I do not think his work rate would have put th eopposition on th eback foot.
Agreed Keogh lacks that composure when he gets near goal but that can be fixed.

  76. adie baker said:

agreed joshwolves…….it looks promising to me aswell.
I wish more fans would have more patience, with the players, with mick and with the club as a whole.
2 very short seasons ago everyone was saying lets build a young team for the future instead of throwing big transfer fees at 30yr old has beens that dont care enough.
I think we had enough years of wasting money and trying the quick fix, it didnt work did it?

Its all very well talkin the talk but we need to walk the walk. Patience is required, the future is bright, but rome aint built in a day !
Ask a certain mr ferguson at man utd.
Sacking the manager isnt the way ahead, its not going to happen, but if it did, it would be back to the drawing board and simply a waste of whats been achieved so far under mick.
I applaud the low profile of the chairman and also for ignoring a section of the fans and sticking with the long term plan.
We have the nucleus of a very promising young squad that only needs fine tuning, im sure the staff are fully aware of this, and lets be honest here…they know better than us fans ?
If i was mick id feel personally insulted by some of our fans…..i certainly wouldnt expect mick to tell me how to do my job cos he aint an engineer, likewise im not an ex pro or a football coach/manager etc so i wouldnt even attempt to comment on his job let alone tell him how to do it and call him thick.
Do you want a manager that sets out to try and keep all the fans happy by picking the likes of eastwood to play every week. I hope not, i want an honest man with discipline who has belief in his football and management principles and has a backbone. I think we have that in mick.

On the subject of eastwood…none of us are privvy to what goes on behind the scenes and on the training ground, and nor should we.
Mick maybe guilty of signing him in the first place but thats football, not all signings work out do they. Show me a manager that hasnt signed a player that hasnt worked out/fitted in etc at a club.
eg Kluivert at newcastle utd, a proven quality world class player without doubt but couldnt fit in/adjust etc and was moved on. Hes just one of many players far far better than freddy eastwood that just havent worked out for one reason or another.
My own opinion is that a lot of micks knockers simply use the freddy debate to attempt to get on his back.

Its strange i dont hear many comments reference the great signings hes made….SEB, Kightly, Foley, Jarvis etc etc.

Mark my words, Mick will be in charge for another season at the very least, im no expert but whatever your opinion of him i reckon we,ll have more chance of success if all the fans unite behind him and our team.

    The future is bright…….be patient.
In the team and mick i trust

To clarify, I did not say I did not want McCarthy sacked. In fact I have not voiced my opinion either way on here as that wasn’t the point I was originally making.

What I did say is that McCarthy won’t be sacked. This is my opinion based on the comments that Morgan and Moxey have been making in the recent weeks. If some people (not you) read the few Wolves stories that the E&S write that they don’t twist into Eastwood vs McCarthy epics then they may come to understand this too. but I’m not holding my breath ;)

we’re stuck with the muppet im afraid, and, sadly, the idiots who think he knows what he’s doing.

I find it intriguing that with all the evidence piled up against him, (he is on the verge of failing to meet his minumum requirements) muppet fans still come on here and slate those pointing out the hard facts, as being “stupid” ” fickle” or “sheep”, when you offer NOTHING UP as opposing fact.

Who the hell gives you the right to say who should or shouldnt support this club, i’d sooner sit next to an albion fan than a mindless turncoat. i dont boo players, but im certainly vocal about mick mccarthys incompetance.

    PS
Freddy is a great player, he will be missed, and he will score for fun against us next season.

It’s amazing the Freddy discussion also brings into discussion MM. I myself belive that MM has gone backwards so badly that his three year plan has extended. His first year was better than anyone could have dreamed and for that we will always be grateful, but surely everyone has got to be realistic, and in my opinion MM has severely under achieved this season.
If MM stays with us next year I will back him from the begining of the season fully, but he must repay that loyalty with results and performances, and I would like him to swallow his pride and admit his mistakes, because this season with player selection and tactical selection we have been let down.
Sometimes when you go down one road it’s difficult to turn round retrace your steps and admit you have taken the wrong direction, but if you do that it makes a better person of you.
I was so pleased that MM and Roy Keane buried the hatchet because life is to short, and maybe MM should bury the hatchet with all of us FANS and admit our season has been poor, then maybe we would believe in him again.
No more spin MM tell us the truth, and if you do lead us into next season good luck, but don’t hide behind falsehoods, we see what’s going on on the pitch were not blind.
Best of luck to the whole squad for Sunday.

Even though i’ve never been the biggest Eastwood fan (but that stems from the senseless hype that surrounds him here) i don’t think he’s been given a fair crack. It’s obvious him and Mick have had a bust up, and Mick being the stubborn tart that he would rather play anyone else upfront apart from Freddy. Mick fell out with Bothroyd pre-season and couldn’t wait to get shot of him, and he fell out with Breen and decided to play Collins ahead of him. I just hope that Mick’s stubborness doesn’t prove to be his or our.

Even though i’m not his biggest fan, nobody wants hime to succeed and score goals for Wolves more than me. I hope he gets a hat-trick tonight, to show Mick up for the stubborn prat that he is.

I just cannot believe that Steve Morgan is going to allow a serial failure like McCarthy making team decisions after the end of this season.

He had to do that to satisfy his commitment to Uncle Jack, but who on earth would want the Yorkshire Mule making long-term, intelligent decisions about any team.

Personally, I wouldn’t allow him to pick our local pub team!

  89. Billy Wrights curls said:

Well said, McCarthy just makes it up as he goes along. This isn’t a solid, experienced manager as the blaggers try to pretend, he is just a make-it-up-as-you-go-along Irish blarney peddlar.

Personally, I read every one of his press articles with total amazement. I don’t understand where this ego comes from, especially when you realize how he has produced such little success in his whole undistinguished career!

Real reality check is that the Wolves fans will be here long after the Yorkshire Mule has gone.

He is an abject failure, and we should not let class players like Freddy go until we get a class manager to makean assessment. I believe that Freddy has the capability to be a great goal poacher, but a very limited manager like McCarthy can only assess personal pain in his “do a shift” mentality. He cannot understand anything above his very limited personal intelligence factor!

  91. Dave S said:

    70. People who pay good money to watch Wolves play awful football go on at McCarthy.

He did a great job last season getting us to the play offs after taking over so late in the close season.

This year has been a different story. Can you name even a handful of games where Wolves have looked a top six side?

I think you over estimate the talents. Some of those players are average Championship players at best.

I always get behind the team at matches, but on here, I like many others are entitled to express their opinions where it does no harm.

A building process involves making progress. We may end up in the play offs yet and some will say that is standing still. In reality this was a poor division and we have gone backwards in my opinion.

eastwood has not been picked since he got involved in alleged nightclub punch up in late aug/early sep. obviously MM made his mind up about him then ,but if MM had not gone 4 SEB in jan our
season would have been over long ago so his decisions are not all bad, think he should get till nov if we don`t make play offs.
if MM did get sack do you think ince would come here, i`ve got my doubts,so who else would be in frame realistically, next thing the morons will be after bully

Nice to see Mick has FINALLY put his faith in Freddy as he selects him in the starting 11.

Freddy duly rewarded him by scoring 2 in probably his last game for the club.

    31. adie baker…Here’s another reality check, we won’t reach the play-offs or we won’t go up and your precious little thick Muppet will be sacked. And for your information Freddie scored twice tonight so he still has the touch, should he actually go to another Championship side he will bag a shed load for his new club and I hope he gestures to the Muppet if he is still here when he does. And GW, I don’t think you know anything about anything from your posts

Freddie all the best mate, hope you have it in you to let us all know what really went on between you and the muppet after you’ve gone. A few home truths won’t hurt

everyone seems concerned about the freddy eastwood saga, although i can’t understand how certain players get preference over freddy my biggest concern is midfield. we don’t appear to be able to compete physically or skilfully with most teams.look at most successful teams in any league and see how many midfielders add to the teams goal tally. that is why we have not dominated a single match at home this season.we need to improve midfield get a stronger captain to organise on the pitch, and more tactical ideas from our coaching staff

  100. billyg said:

final match of the season, give the team a lift lets not boo anyone mick saved us last year moxey keeps us in the black (no leeds scenario)players do their best.changes may be needed but booing won’t accomplish it

He scored against a pub side, come on ….. Don Goodman? Hardly challenging opposition. But then he did score against the mighty Luxemburg! Making him a world class international striker? Agree with 99 we desperately need a midfield general and a new defence. Midfield is way to flimsy. We have a goalscoring hero in SEB get behind him and support the team.

  102. baggy 1 said:

some of you really are idiots
Eastwood is a quality player, but then again when you hear a manager say S Ward is his best ever signing, thats just about sums it up for you lot.
Give MM 30 year contract. Doing a great job, you lot have no chance of play offs forget it, unless you play walsall, Did S Ward score last night, MM will build your next team around him.

  103. Alexwolves said:

Exactly…he scored against ageing has beens from Div2 and Luxembourg! We owe him nothing he is nothing to Wolves, he played about games and rightly or wrongly Mic dropped him, there must of been a reason though. From what I hear he doesn’t pull his weight in training and he walks around like he owns the place.

US TRUE SUPPORTERS SUPPORT WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS NOT A RESERVE STRIKER !!

I hope the Freddy fans log off with Freddy at the end of the season and get over their little love affair ASAP…it is shameful to be honest.

Have tried to post twice but for some reason my posts disappear. Just wanted to say a lot of so called supporters are more like a muppet than muppet Mick are. For some reason they deny the fact that Eastwood has got lots and lots of chances and has figured in a lot of games without impressing. He has not been good enough. Not scored in his last 34 games in the Wolves shirt and when he finally does a lot of you think that he scores everytime he plays. Ok - now he has scored in 100 percent of the last 1 games. YES!.. lets all forget about the 34 games before that. Get rid of him and then he can be lazy and ignorant at lower levels where he belongs.
