Wolves bid to cash in on slip-up

0448wolves-v-coventry.jpgWolves players believe the crumbling form of play-off rivals Watford could prove the key to their hopes of a top-six finish on Sunday.

Their Championship challenge is guaranteed another tense finish in the final match of the season against Plymouth on Sunday at Molineux when Wolves can still hope for a second successive play-offs appearance.

Victory is an imperative for Mick McCarthy’s side, who can then finish in the top six if Palace, at home to Burnley, and Watford, who visit Blackpool, slip up.

A 1-1 draw at Coventry kept Wolves in contention, but the big shock was Watford’s home defeat by an already-relegated Scunthorpe which suddenly leaves the one-time leaders and promotion favourites in danger of missing out entirely.

Wolves striker Andy Keogh revealed that he rang his former Scunthorpe team-mate Ian Morris on Saturday morning seeking a favour at Vicarage Road.

And he said: “Watford have now won only once in 13 games and I was on the phone to my mate Ian Morris on Saturday morning saying ‘you can do us a favour.’

“He said don’t worry and so it proved, they’ve been great for us. If Watford even draw next week and we get a good win with a few goals we can go ahead of them.

“There are probably still a few twists and turns ahead. We have to beat Plymouth and anything can happen.

“I’m sure all the fans will have their radios on and hopefully we can get that bit of luck – we’re still kicking ourselves about Ipswich last week.

“Last year it went down to the last day and we had to win, but we were already in the top six then.”

His fellow goal scorer Sylvan Ebanks-Blake now faces a high-stakes final day against the club who reluctantly sold him to Wolves in January after a £1.5m release clause was triggered.

“I had a slight inkling it would all come down to this game,” he admitted. “I don’t imagine the Plymouth fans will be happy that I left midway through the season. It’s the way it goes in football, though.

“You put any one of those fans in my position then they’d have done the same thing.

“To still be in the shake-up at this point is what we wanted. Anything can happen. It’s been up and down all season, no-one knows what’s going to happen but it’s certainly going to be dramatic.”

The only saving grace is that if we did win on Saturday and occupied a play off place, we would have guaranteed to mess it all up on the final day. At least we have a chance by other teams messing up, wonder if our team would have been ‘chokers’ if the Governor was in charge?

    1. Obviously not alot, winning 3-0 at home to cardiff was hardley blowing it.

Even if we don’t make it sunday the seasons not been a complete write off, a difficult season with the signs of an emerging team. Should only need a couple of signings in the close season to walk this season next year

    6. How many times have we heard this. Next year never comes! MM has blown the season with his stubborn attitude, woeful tactics and contempt for Wolves fans. If his public personna is an indication of how he talks to players tehn no wonder we are in the position we are in. This league has been there for the taking all year and we have not responded. Team choices have at times been bewildering, the treatment of Rosa, Eastwood and some of the youngsters has not been explained. The persistance of choosing certain players out of position, out of form and out of pig-headedness has been the cause of our mediocre record this season.

I see the Steve bull stand faithfull are out, whinge, moan, complain and phone up the radio.

Try supporting the team a little bit and you might end up enjoying your miserable lives, or would you complain at that?

  16. Pondlife said:

10 - Complete rubbish. I can explain all the points that you raise, as have others on many occasions. Rosa - Not good enough, reserve team football is completely different to first team. Eastwood simply refuses to play to our system. The youngsters have either been injured or are not ready for first team football, the squad is generally very young anyway. Mick has been forced to play people out of position through injuries. Seems that you, like a lot of posters on here, have forgotten that we are trying to build a team that can grow and improve together as a unit. Were getting close, just stop wetting your pants.
On the positive side, nobody can say that the squad we have now is not better than this time last year. Agree with Newbridge that we seem to be a couple of quality players short, this WILL be rectified during the summer.
    KEEP THE FAITH!

I love SEB but this quote is probably pushing it from a Plymouth perspective.

“I don’t imagine the Plymouth fans will be happy that I left midway through the season. It’s the way it goes in football, though. You put any one of those fans in my position then they’d have done the same thing.”

If Plymouth beat us they’ll finish above us and we could finish up 10th. Still I’m not trying to think about that scenario.

    Come on Wolves!

    16. I think anyone with half a footballing brain can understand these points, but they mearly pick them up from the herd mentality that persists.

Fact is if everyone was honest they would say the reason why they’re so upset is the fact that the boggies have done what we’ve failed to do, and because of that there has been no perspective on our own (albeit humbler) achievments this season

I’m not a great Freddy fan, but in a game we have to win, I would rather have 5 minutes of brilliance and an eye for the net rather than 90 minutes of S.Ward’s mediocrity

HappyBaggie…….. I was talking about the bickering.

But you are right; perhaps ‘trollops’ was the wrong adjective. In the accepted connotation of the word, what, indeed could be better.

Mind you, at my age, I can’t be bothered with all that mucky stuff any more !

MM is not going so it’s time you went instead and take the likes of peter, quality counts and the rest of your pro Freddie morons.

I really think if we don’t go up it’s not the end of the world. Providing we keep SEB, Kites and hennessey. Get Carsley in the midfield and sort the defence it can only get better.
Southbank to call fellow supporters fools is showing you for what you are and I’m sure the team and manager would perform better without the thuggish behaviour you and your fellows show at games and in web forums.
Everyone has their own opinion about this season but as 18 pointed out having the Baggies doing well has probably put the dampeners on things.
Look at the players we’ll have back from injury (hopefully) next season and some fresh new faces and things don’t look quite so bleak.

Comment 33. Have you not heard of freedom of speech. Southbank barmyarmy is spot on. Regardless what happens this season, it has been a mess. A few highlights alot of low lights. I cant be bothered to list them as I will be here all day. MM needs to go. But somehow I cant see the board doing the decent thing and sacking him.

  39. Hinton's left cross said:

While making the playoffs might be fun, the end result will be failure.

McCarthy always fails, ask people from the teams he has managed previously. At Sunderland he had the fans at each others throats, and it has taken Keane a year to sort out the mess he inherited.

So, let’s have some fun with this strange end of season, but I don’t think anything will come of it.
