When hundreds of runners from across the Midlands line up for a 10k run next month, it is unlikely any will have as much running in their legs as “Mad” Mac Carr.
As the running partner of “Blind Dave” Heeley, Mac was the unsung hero as the duo completed a record-breaking seven marathons on seven continents in seven days earlier this month. And glutton for punishment Mac will get this year’s Dudley-Kingswinford 10km Road Race under way on Wednesday, May 7. The 44-year-old is one of 1,100 entrants for the race.
But Mac, from Great Bridge who has taken part in the last ten races, says he is not aiming to notch another record by smashing the 20-year benchmark of 29 minutes 40 seconds set by Mark Dalloway in 1987.
“I’m just hoping to get a fairly reasonable time,” he said.
“I’m back running now and hopefully I can get a couple of good week’s training in and go round in about 36 or 37 minutes.”
Last year the run attracted record numbers, with more than 1,300 setting out on the roads of Kingswinford and Wall Heath.
The course takes the runners out from Dudley Kingswinford Rugby Club in Swindon Road, down the Mile Flat, past the Navigation pub and through the countryside before returning to the club.
The run is the largest mid-week evening road race in the country and a crowd of well-wishers is expected to line the route to cheer the competitors.
Food will be laid on at the club after the race, which starts at 7.15pm.
“Blind Dave” ran the course with Mac last year but will be in Dubai when this year’s race goes ahead.
Mac’s efforts in helping Dave achieve his marathon dream were recognised last week when he was presented with a Local Heroes award by the Express & Star.
