Keeper frustrates Keogh

0448wolves-v-coventry.jpgAndy Keogh was full of praise for Coventry keeper Kasper Schmeichel as he produced a performance of which his dad would have been proud to deny Wolves at Coventry.

Schmeichel, son of the legendary former Manchester United keeper Peter, made a string of key saves to thwart Wolves’ second-half revival.

A stop right on the final whistle which prevented Sylvan Ebanks-Blake grabbing a winner was as good as any for a player whose recruitment by Manchester City triggered the decision which brought Wayne Hennessey to Wolves.

Keogh said: “It goes to the wire – but their keeper has made some unbelievable saves.

“It was a bad miss from myself in the first half, I think I almost headed it too well.

“You’re always told to head the ball down and I headed it down too well and it bounced over the bar.

“I flicked another one towards goal and thought Seyi was going to put it in but ‘yer man’ somehow bicycle kicked it off the line.

“Then there was the one from me he pushed onto the bar and from Sylvan right at the end he’s made another one.

“Sometimes you have to hold your hand up and say, ‘really good keeper.’

“But at the same time their goal, a free-kick straight down the pitch, should have been mopped up.

“Schmeichel has just been the thorn in our side. The one he saved off me he did a starfish which reminded me of his Dad.

“I don’t think he knew much about it but clearly he’s a good keeper and made the goal as small as possible and it flicked off his hand onto the bar.

“I couldn’t have got any more on it I think, it was a great little chip by ‘Kights’, but fair play to him he’s got a great future.”

Keogh had little interest in finding out the other results involving Wolves’ play-off rivals at the finish.

“At the end of the game I was just disappointed we didn’t win, I wasn’t rushing to see the other results,” he added.

“As far as I was concerned we needed six points, but it’s worked out that four could yet be good enough.”

The game also saw Wolves unearth further possibilities for Michael Kightly as a switch into an advanced central midfield position proved the key factor in getting the team on top after a tepid first half.

“We were average in the first half but in the second we put the pressure on and on another day if their goalkeeper doesn’t pull off a couple of ‘worldy’ saves we win the game,” said Kightly.

“It’s a good point even though we really needed all three but because results went out way we’re still in it.

“They played with three central midfielders and after they scored their goal they sat back so the gaffer moved me in to the middle behind ‘Blakey’.

“I think it paid off particularly in the second half when we had a lot of joy from it so it’s one of the things we can do.”

some fair points but its “not putting the ball in the net” that has cost us too many times this season, yes this 1 was down to good goalkeeping for most part but if by some miracle we scrape 6th place and end up playing hull ,we will have to hit the net at least 3 times to beat them as i feel hull will score 2 (at least)against us.

    Talk about ‘one sided’ reporting!

I seem to remember Hennessey making a number of ‘key’ saves too. The first half summed up Wolves this season, no creativity and rubbish defending. The second half we huffed and puffed a bit but showed the fact that we seriously lack quality players.

We could have lost that game by 3 or 4 on another day and if you didn’t know either team you wouldn’t have know which ends of the table they were from!

McCarthy’s interview after the game summed him up too. I hope I don’t have to listen to many more!

Don’t praise him, beat him…We were told at the start of the season only promotion would be good enough this year.We don’t want to hear any more excuses.Too many draws, stupid games lost, excuse after excuse.Daft thing is we could still make the play offs but we need WINNERS.

    “Team frustrate fans”
Andy Keogh epitomises our team’s profile…plenty of enthusiasm and endevour, but somewhat short on quality.
I really hope when Morgan says he will strengthen in the Summer, he does not mean more of the same.
No point in clearing out one set of journeymen for another bunch.
Midfield needs Carsley or Murphy and defence needs at least one Danny Shitu.
3 quality players is better than a dozen Kyles, Elliots etc.
We have the core of a good squad, let’s finish the job for next season.

Sometimes when i read comments by so called wolves supporters i give up.McCarthy started with nothing 2 years ago . Hoddle had walked out as the team with no players prepared for the new season McCarthy came in when the team was in shreds and begged borrowed and stole players to put out a team from then he has been building what could be a great young team which takes time which you wont give him why do think other clubs are sniffing around our team because they think the team McCarty is building is bad ? are you thick ?it is because they can see a class young tem in the making. I have love wolves all my life and i cant stan the negative comments made by so called supporters

Schmeichel makes an “unbelievable” save at the death? I was 10 metres from there, and believe me it was not that unbelievable. I think the 3 outstanding saves Hennessey made in the 2nd half were better. I do not understand MM comments, we played v poorly 1st half, touch better in the 2nd. And we spotted Eastwood sitting in the stand behind the visitors bench. Is he injured??
