Having just read in a woman’s magazine that flaky popstril Geri Halliwell of Spice Girls fame is bringing out a series of children’s books; I can’t help but moan in true Meldrew style “I don’t believe it!” writes blogger Charlie Cashdan.
As if Fergie, Madonna and Jordan aren’t bad enough, Halliwell is now at it as well!
It’s nice and easy to trundle out a few children’s books when you are a wealthy famous person, your name will certainly guarantee a publisher and lots of sales from our celebrity obsessed society.
Oh it’s pathetic, please just back off and give genuine struggling talented writers a chance. How are they supposed to compete against the power of fame, no matter how talented and deserving they are?
I’m writing a novel in between working full time, being on call from work most weekends, step kids, responsibilities to rapidly aging and increasingly eccentric parents, being there for my husband and housework. This is why it’s taking me years to complete!
I’m not rich, not a celebrity, not married to a wealthy man or an heiress so I can’t give up work and write full time. I will really struggle to get a publisher because I am a complete unknown, and even if I did I would find it impossible to meet their deadlines as real life would make things impossible and my job is far too demanding (The advance they would pay me would not be enough for me to give up work)
Therefore, I am going to publish, market and sell it myself with my own money in between juggling kids, husband, work, parents etc. This is the sort of reality and constraints facing most first time authors unless of course you are famous in which case you just wave your celebrity magic dust over the whole issue and up pops a book, publisher, buyers and even more money to add to your pile. How lovely!
Basically, if you were a publisher or book store, who would you choose? Me, or Geri Halliwell? Would it even matter which was the best book?

I don’t believe for one moment that these “stars” personally write Children’s Books. somebody else writes them and the “stars” lend their name to them to make sales. For instance when a report says GH is “bringing out” a series of children’s books that’s a far cry from writing them. It’s a crock. Some of them probably can’t write.
its called ghost writing an its done by most famous so called writers. i write and it requires a good knowledge of english something most stars don’t have.
