Wolves hopes hang by a thread

0448wolves-v-coventry.jpgWolves’ play-off hopes are hanging by a slender thread after a 1-1 draw with Coventry in a thriller at the Ricoh Stadium.

Sylvan Ebanks-Blake struck from the penalty spot to claim his 23rd League goal of the campaign after Elliott Ward headed Coventry in front in the first half.

How the two teams then failed to find another goal between them will be a mystery as they tore at each other in the final half hour.

With more than 5000 Wolves fans stacked behind one goal, Wolves were left in no doubt of what they thought of their first half performance.

Apart from a quality Andy Keogh header, Wolves struggled to assemble any kind of threat.

And their marking was nowhere to be seen when Coventry grabbed their 17th minute goal from Elliott Ward - brother of Wolves’ defender Darren.

It was a different story after the break as Kightly provided the inspiration for a much improved performance.

It was Kightly’s burst into the area which led to Wolves winning their penalty before he set up Keogh for a shot which was tipped over the bar by Jasper Schmeichel.

Coventry had their moments aswell in a rousing second half which needed Wayne Hennessey to be at his best.

The match finished with Schmeichel making the best save of the game to keep out Ebanks-Blake as Wolves pummelled away in search of the victory that they desperately wanted.

But results elsewhere mean that Wolves will take their top six hopes into the final weekend of te Championshiop programme when they face Plymouth at Mo.ineux next Sunday

Calm down, Watford failed to beat Scunthorpe at home, they have one once in thirteen matches and now have to travel to Blackpool, they will lose , my money is on it. A win for us at home to Plymouth WILL be enough.

With one game left we can still finish anywhere from 5th to 10th.

I’ve said all season we will still be in it with one game left…& we are. I’m not Nostrodamous or nothin, but it really doesn’t take a genious to predict this would happen cause it always happens!

My other prediction unfortunately is that if we were to win our last game it would have got us in the play-offs…but we will find a way to blow it!

    Simon :)

Not long back from today’s match. A very mediocre to poor performance. First half was inept, and was the best example of why we need centre halves who can play the ball, and take it forward e.g. as Lescott did.
The goal conceded was so amateurish, in defending terms.

What is Gibson on the pitch for? He is essentially a non contributor.

Olifin… had a lousy game, and this meant the midfield seldom influenced the game effectively.

Man of the match, Elokobi. I would, however, say that neither fullback seemed willing, or is it permitted, to overlap?

    The Manager remains tactically unable.

1 game to go still not in our hands, but having got back from the game and with 2hours to ponder what as gone on today, its clear MM is NOT the man for wolves, if we get up sorry with this bloke in charge we are DERBY revisited! simple as!!
can be as positive as you like, yea ill cheer them on till the cows come home, but these young lads need guidance, a purpose and not be afraid to hold the ball.
like i said against plymouth ill be there cheering them on, but if we did fluke the play-offs in the famous words of rodney marsh “it would be like putting lipstick on a pig, end the day its still a pig!!!”
please morgan keep this squad together and with a few additions we could have something special as you say, but not with mick mccarthy car parked in the “managers” car space!!
one man, who can make us great and if he leaves after making us successful then so be it. that man is Paul Ince!!!

One more goal would have put is in pole position but that familiar position of 7th in the championship is where stand again. Not impossible that Palace or Watford will slip up but it wouldn’t be the biggest surprise in the world if we secure that 7th place again - a position that sums up what it’s like to be a Wolves supporter.

We are in the Play Offs if we beat Plymouth and Palace don’t beat Burnley
We are in the Play Offs if we beat Plymouth and Blackpool beat Watford
We are in the Play Offs if we beat Plymouth by 3 goals or more and Blackpool draw with Watford
We are stuffed if we beat Plymouth by 2 goals or less and Blackpool draw with Watford

Will Mick want to stay? Will Kights stay if he goes? Let’s go back to supporting the team - like last season!

It’s all been said. It shouldn’t be like this. With the additional players and what we had last season, we should not be in 7th.

Totally down to the manager who continues to have no idea of team selection or tactics. I’ve not made up my mind about Freddie but it doesn’t take Einstein to realise that you need to keep a goalscorer on the bench who can create something out of nothing….just in case you need a goal from somewhere with 20 minutes to go!

Whether we fluke it or not, we need a new Manager or we’ll have another season of frustration….whichever division we’re in!

His latest comment that “we need to win next week or it’s over” is another classic and reminds me of the old Howard Wilkinson quote that he was a great believer in the theory that if the other team scores you need two to win!

Nerves seemed to get to everyone and with te two CMs getting booked it took a lot of bite out of that area.
WE just need to go for it and hope, maybe its not what we deserve but if you get the chance go for it.

I keep getting flashbacks of when we were chasing Bolton for 6th back in 1999. Would like to see us make the playoffs but it would probably do this team good to stay in the Championship if we are to blood the likes of Little, Davies, Jones etc. They will have a massive role next year if we’re still in the Division from Hell. If we end up in the Premier these guys haven’t got a chance as it’ll be more ex-Sunderland rejects on their way here.

In two minds over next Sunday, technically I have to work but I’ll be no use there with the game on. It’s a toughy!

If we had a decent manager, we wouldn’t be clinging on to hopes and relying on others.

In a game we really needed to win, MM chooses not to have Freddy Eastwood even on the bench but rules in favour of a poor AND not even fully fit striker.

He is putting personal issues and favouritism before the good of the football club and regardless of what happens next weekend he should go.

I was backing him until recent weeks, but how anyone can fail to see that he has wrecked what should have been a real promotion push this season is now beyond me.

  50. John (Cheslyn Hay) said:

Wolves fans - take a moment to look at things from a player’s perspective. Keogh scuffs a shot and hears “Freddy, Freddy”. Collins and Elliot get booed when they come on. Foley, Elokobi, Oli, Jarvis, Gray, Henry, etc, never hear their names echoing around the stands: but they do hear plenty of “South bank”, “Left side start the wave”, “Middle bit”, etc. Next, ask yourself if it’s possible for a crowd to influence a player’s performance. Finally, ask yourself, “If I was a player, would playing at Molineux get the best out of me?”.

The players know this and it shows in their attitude & performance (with a few exceptions)!
I don`t see any new blood being given a tryout, just the same old failures.
Dismal displays may be excused if the results are obtained but this has not been the case this season.

We are still at least 4 players short of a decent team and our manager and coaching staff are tactically inept - we have spent £5 million since the end of last season and we have gone backwards.

I never like predicting results for my own team,
    tempting fate an-all-that-stuff.

I understand this season as been frustrating to
all you Wulfies, big expectations after last terms unexpected success,
but i honestly believe Wolves will end up in the playoffs, and at the expense of Watford,
i said last week that they were wobbling worse than a drunk, NOW i think they have stopped wobbling, and have fell face down on the pavement.

    Good luck mate.

We again failed to defend a set piece from the right of midfield were punished with a simple header. Coventry could have caught us on the break three times in the first half. Wolves came out after half time with more urgency and bossed the game. It was never going to be an easy game with Coventry playing for their lives. It would have been a welcome win if SEB had scored at the death but I didn’t see the game as poor, I saw an exciting, end to end match between two teams with different agendas.
I don’t see what a lot of supporters see with McCarthy, last year he was a hero because he over achieved (a bit like Billy Davies) this year he is a failure because we haven’t got automatic promotion. We have failed to put teams away at Molineux and have won only one game comfortably at home (Cardiff) nevertheless, I believe that we are building well and have a very good season to look forward to (albeit, probably in the Championship) It won’t surprise me though if Watford slip up on Sunday, leaving the door open for us.

#85 Morgan…. reckon you are the actual Morgan! How can anyone see this being a good game? A penalty is not the result of great playing, its a result of a bit of bad luck..Wolves should have lost this one..we haven’t been consitent all year. It’s that factor that gets teams up to the top.

I can’t figure out any team based on the players he has who would make a great team. One or two players are indeed brilliant.

MM is always confused when it comes to picking a team. Apart his “buddy” Breen who always appears to get a place irrespective of his performance.Never picks anything close to the same team each week. How can the guys get used to playing with each other if they only have the odd game. MM must pull the players names out a hat.

Last Saturday he called out Nike as he has pulled the label out of the cap! Took him 20 minutes to discover he wasn’t taking a pee!

“Settling for the playoffs will be failure” Thats what super *ick said back in August. Now theres a good chance we wont even be in them. The season that promised so much but delivered so little. After last seasons great achievments, the squad needed afew touch ups, central defender with pace, wingers (as back up)and a goal scorer. There was only one man who could mess it up and he has.
On your bike Mick and take your trash with you!!! p.s. we have actually got good young players, as northampton or everton!!!

how can we expect our team to get fired up when they come onto the pitch to the sound of the limp wristed ‘hiho silver lining’ - barmy - we need an anthem that stirs the players, makes the fans stand loud n proud - and intimidates the rest!
ACDC- ‘FOR THOSE ABOUT TO ROCK- WE SALUTE YOU’ BRING IT ON!!! BRING IT ON!!!
