Baggies fans set to salute SuperKev

phillips2.jpgThousands of ’superheroes’ are set to follow Albion to QPR next week after fans decided to honour leading scorer Kevin Phillips with their annual fancy dress day.

Baggies supporters have settled on superheroes as the theme for their fancy dress away-day at Loftus Road in tribute to Phillips, who is known as ‘SuperKev’.

The theme was decided in an online fans poll and was chosen over a range of other alternatives including Roman costumes in tribute to Czech striker Roman Bednar.

Fancy dress has become a tradition for Albion’s final away match of the season since supporters first held a beach party in the early 1990s.

West Bromwich Albion Supporters’ Club chairman John Homer said: “What can you say about ‘SuperKev?’

“He’s the ultimate professional who keeps himself ’super’ fit.

“Some of the feats he’s pulled off have been ‘heroic’.

“Seriously though, the whole team has performed heroics this season. It’s been great to watch.

“Hopefully, they’ll finish off the job against Southampton on Monday night so we can all have a great day out at QPR.”

Themes from previous years have included togas when Albion played Bristol Rovers in the Roman city of Bath, business suits after their were branded England’s scruffiest fans and blond wigs in tribute to former midfielder Richard Sneekes.

In recent years fans have dressed as former defender Darren Moore, referees after a string of decisions went against them in the Premier League and Vikings in honour of Danish defender Thomas Gaardsoe.

And last year they chose an Irish theme in tribute to Republic of Ireland defender Paul McShane and goalkeeper Dean Kiely.
