They thought they had seen the last of the traffic cones, stop signs and red lights. But motorists and shopkeepers in the Compton area of Wolverhampton have been hit with another set of overnight roadworks.
Sixteen weeks of work were due to come to a close last Friday, but the diggers were back on the streets last night. The resurfacing work along Compton Road and Bridgnorth Road, near the Daisy Fresh and Essential supermarket and the Oddfellows pub, will continue tonight and tomorrow from 6pm until midnight.
Driver Emily Edwards, aged 24 from Willenhall, was stuck in last night’s jams, which left motorists trailing back along Henwood Road, Bridgnorth Road, Finchfield Hill and Compton Road.
Miss Edwards said people were being directed around the roundabout and were brought bumper to bumper. The office worker said: “I was there at around 9pm and it was madness. There were a few sets of temporary traffic lights and workmen holding stop-and-go signs.
“The workmen had to direct the traffic and were ushering people around as it was so confusing. There was a lot of shouting going on and people were bumper to bumper.
“I was stuck there for about 20 minutes.”
Malcolm Crump, aged 53, has run the Spar supermarket, in Bridgnorth Road, for the past 11 years.
He said the past 16 weeks had been “an absolute nightmare” for his business as people steered clear of the area. “We were ready to get the bunting and flags out when we thought they had finished,” he said.
“This is a nasty sting in the tail and my heart sank when I saw the temporary traffic lights go back up, I couldn’t believe it.”
Wolverhampton City Council is putting the finishing touches to £400,000 of road improvements.
The work, originally estimated at 12 weeks, has hit local trade and seen traffic backed up along Compton Road and Finchfield Hill.
A burst water pipe at the junction of Bridgnorth Road and The Holloway brought even more roadworks to the area last Friday.

you think that’s bad…try living in London, we have had roadworks for what seems forever, streets closed off, temporary traffic lights in every other street…just when you think its over.. they put up another set of lights further down the road!!!
Complete madness!
Do people have nothing better to moan about or is this reporting hyperbole? “Nightmare! Anyone would have thought there had been a plane crash!
I drove twice through Compton on Monday night during the resurfacing and there were minimal delays. It was all very well organised with traffic lights and plenty of workmen getting on with the job.
As a resident of Compton, at the end of the day we’ve got a new CCTV system, new pavements, bollards and smooth new road surface – it’s a much nice village centre now – lets not lose sight of that!
