A former Dudley post office could soon be called home by residents if plans to turn it into apartments are approved. The Wellington Road Post Office shut in 2004 and has been out of use ever since.
Now plans have been submitted to convert it into two apartments. Mr Haspreet Kang, whose family bought the old Post Office after its closure, had an application to turn it into a takeaway or restaurant turned down. Now the family has applied for the building to become apartments.
The proposal will be decided within the next few weeks.
Mr Kang said: “It has been empty since it closed and it would be nice to see it brought back into use.
“We think apartments would sit well there and are we will have to see if the councillors agree.”
St James’s ward councillor Serena Craigie said: “I never wanted to see the Post Office closed in the first place, but we were rail-roaded into it and now it is better to see it back in use for something than sitting empty.”
However Councillor Craigie said she was concerned over the number of flats being built in the St James’s ward.
She said: “This ward has got more flats than any other ward in the borough and I would like to see less of them built and more family homes, that is what is needed.”
Post offices across the region have been closed down over the last few years including branches in Dudley, Halesowen and Stourbridge.
The closures came despite a desperate battle to keep them open by angry residents and councillors.
In Dudley, the offices in Alderwood Precinct, Church Road, Kates Hill, The Priory, Upper Gornal, Wellington Road and Woodsetton closed.
Quarry Bank’s Caledonia post office also closed along with the Colley Lane office, in Cradley and Stourbridge’s Wynall Lane office.
