Schools prepare for strike

Schools prepare for strike action by teachersThousands of schools across the country, including many in the Express & Star region, are expected to be closed or partially shut by Thursday’s teachers’ strike.

See below for the list of local schools affected

The walkout by members of the National Union of Teachers (NUT) will lead to the closure of more than 1,000 schools in England and Wales and the partial closure of at least a similar number.

At least a third of schools are set to be affected by the stoppage, which is in protest at a three-year pay deal, including 2.45% from September and rises of 2.3% in subsequent years.

Local authority leaders on Tuesday night predicted marked regional variation in the number of closures, often depending on the size of the NUT’s membership in specific areas.

Around half of schools will shut in some areas, including Bristol, 10% in regions such as Cheshire but virtually all schools in some parts, including Newham in East London.

Schools affected by the teachers’ strike on Thursday, April 24 in the Black Country and Staffordshire

Ridiculous.Just shows how much they care about the children’s education.Notice they go on strike when the weather’s nice not in middle of winter.Don’t they get enough time off?Suppose they’ll tell us they spent the day marking or preparing lessons.

mmmmm they moan about truancy!!! they should be leading by example!! education is already on the slide….if everybody in every trade went on strike to try and get their own way the country would be at a standstill!!! muppets, get back 2 work and teach the kids something for a change!!!

  3. Bob said:

Ref comment 1. Obviously your 24/7 child care just failed and thats why you are stressed. If comments 1 & 2 gave as much support to teachers as they do moaning then perhaps things would be better. A little honesty folks about the number of days you’ve lost or given “parental” aggreement too compared with 1 day lost through a genuine grievance. If its so easy to teach, if its so easy to control 30 kids at a time, if the holidays are so good why don’t you two get off your backsides and go into teaching.

I wonder whether the parents complaining about the teachers’ strike attend Parents Evenings - or do they simply view school as a convenient baby-sitting service? I live next to a school and regularly see many teachers arriving at 7:30 a.m. and leaving well after 5p.m. I would have thought that most dedicated parents would be pleased with the opportunity to spend a few more hours with their own children!

For “Stressed Parent”, see work shy layabout. Note the time of the post.

I suppose your interaction with your kids centre around the conversation to which Wii game they want on the telly in their bedroom when they get home, followed by what take away they would like tonight!

    You haven’t a clue.

As a Civil Servant who will also be on stike tomorrow, the way public sector employees is a disgrace.

Beware Mr Brown, you’ll be out of a job by Xmas. We put you in power, we’ll get you out.

ALL OUT PUBLIC SERVICE STRIKE IS COMING!

I cannot believe the schools are striking!! Ridiculous! As if 13 weeks holiday a year PLUS 5 extra training days IN TERM is not enough time off school for our children AND the teachers, they have to have a moan about pay too, which is considerably better than that of other 48 week a year workers like me and many others, with only 4 weeks holiday a year! We have to pay extra childcare in these holidays, which is not cheap, I have 2 children and have to pay £240 a week in school holidays, thats £48 a day, which I will have to pay extra tomorrow, thats a weeks shopping money!! Obviously I understand that the teaching profession is a one which requires lots of academic qualifications and years of tutorage and examinations but so do many other professions and you dont see many of them running out at the slightest thing! The fact is that this is our childrens education that is suffering,(never mind that they are the future of our country which seems to be getting over run by other nationalities better educated offspring)and these teachers and staff that CHOSE this profession are more concerned with lining their pockets than actually educating the next generation, what example does this set to our children! Have another day off because 13 weeks isn’t enough, go on you deserve it! Do you?? I really could go on and on about this, as I feel our country is letting our children down very badly in the education stakes and this is just another reason. Mountain wolf, you are obviously NOT a parent, yes some teachers go in at 730am and finish later, but that is mainly due to after school clubs and in school childcare, which is not cheap, and the staff get paid extra for in most cases!! YES I do attend parents evenings, and NO I do not see school as free childcare, I work full time and rush around juggling 2 jobs, kids and their care, and pig headed curtain twitchers such as yourself will never realise as you need to actually have children to realise! There are many conscientious parents such as myself out there that are working to give our children a better future, but there must be other ways of getting the point across rather than depriving our children of the education that they need, deserve and that us taxpayers actually pay for!

Your comment contains so many inaccuracies that I will not even dignify it with reason.

  8. ranty pants said:

hmmmm arriving at work at 7.30 am and leaving at 5? sounds like a normal job to me.

How dare you criticise ’stressed parent’.
I honestly thought this would be a reasonable ‘debate’ and you turn it into a character assassination! All comments are aimed at the teaching profession, not you personally Keith Curle’s Big To, yet you stoop to child like behaviour. And you are a teacher? Because i can tell you are definitely not a parent.

Teachers get lots of holidays, more than any career, yes you do have to do work at home but what do you think i do after a days work? I have to come home (at 6pm) and cook, clean, wash, bath 2 toddlers, help with homework and everything else that us working parents do. It’s 10pm before i even get to sit down.
And you moan because you don’t get paid enough while having 13 weeks holiday a year??!!
I must explain the time of my post too as you seem to need reassurances that everyone else is busy at work….. today is my twins birthday so i have booked a day off.

  9. helen said:

do i see school as free childcare? No, it’s meant to be a free education to which all children are entitled to. What a stupid comment!!

And bob, why don’t i go into teaching…. hmmmm let me see…… it wasn’t my career choice, i have no desire to be a teacher. If you don’t like your career then leave.

Maybe it’s true what they say…… those who can’t, teach.

I wonder how understanding you will be come summer time and you want to jet off on your hols (in your 6 weeks!!! summer holiday) and the airport staff are on strike?

  10. Mountain Wolf said:

Education is not free. If you pay income tax this should be blindingly obvious!

  11. helen said:

it sure isn’t free! i thought it was also obvious that i meant we don’t have to pay ’school fees’ as in private schooling or college. YOU implied that parents see it as free babysitting. Your comment makes it sound as if parents ‘palm’ our children off on teachers just so that we can have a few hours rest. to be honest you sound like a very bitter teacher (are you a teacher? i suspect so) who really doesn’t like his job or even children for that matter.

  12. Bob said:

Dear Ranty Pants…..the name seems to fit. Teachers are Parents to. Your child care seems very cheap, where is it so I can take advantage. I think you forgot the little matter of Government financial help with child care or do you earn so much that this is zero for you? As for critisism of “stressed parent”, its simple , when you stick your head above the parapet….expect to get it shot off !

  13. mad bad world!! said:

for 3,4,5 i havent got any children, and like many other people have pointed out, teachers get enough holidays in the year, more than anyone else!!! parents do not see schools as free childcare, incase you hadnt forgotton, int the law that children attend school??? mmmmm

  14. Bob said:

Ah so stressed parent is actually Helen. Helloo Hellen. No I don,t teach and as for your career choices… no comment… pity you can’t do the same for others. Re my hols… such staff strikes don,t effect private jets.. especially when you are the pilot.. Have a nice day!
