What a result it was for us on Sunday. Many feared the derby would be a tightly contested, nervous affair with the two teams separated by the odd goal, myself included, writes blogger Gregg Williams.
How wrong I was, instead we totally outclassed the Blues with some ‘terrific’ football.
It certainly bodes well for the future that we have found a formula with which to put the lesser teams to the sword. What a boost for our English players to finally show Fabio Capello what they can do. If he is looking for a way to inject some inspiration into England’s attacking play, he could do with trying Ashley Young in the free role he is currently revelling in for us.
We can build a really great team around Barry and Young, that seems obvious now, and with any luck we will now be able to attract some top quality players in the summer to complement the ones we already have.
There have been a few special moments for us to savour this season, none less than the late substitution of Olof Mellberg at the end of the derby game.
It was very good of Martin O’Neill to make the change to allow Olof to receive such an ovation from the Villa fans at such a high point for them and the great man himself.
He has always worn his heart on his sleeve, played with passion and commitment, even when he was dropped for a time by David O’Leary. He never hid his displeasure of our rivals, which didn’t help our cause in one particular derby game, however it is hard to hold that against him when we would all struggle to remain professional if asked to talk about the Blues.
I’m sure his official send off in our last home game will be emotional, but at the same time it will probably be this moment that will be looked back on with the most fondness by Villa fans when recalling our favourite Swede.
I must mention the tragic loss of one of our own, the young lad who was killed in a car accident after the game on Sunday. This sort of incident will always put football firmly into perspective, and i’m sure I speak for all Villa fans when I say Christopher Priest, RIP.
