The news was confirmed today by Saddlers’ Chairman, Jeff Bonser, who commented: “Richard came to the club at a very difficult time, when we had just been relegated to League Two and our playing fortunes were at a low ebb.

“During these past two years, through a great deal of hard work, he has led the club to the League Two Championship and to a position just outside the League One play-off positions, a very impressive achievement.

“We would like to place on record our appreciation for the work that Richard has undertaken for the club, and to wish him well for the future”.

Money added: “Looking to the future, I believe that this decision is in the best interests of both myself and the club.

“The timing of my departure will give the club the maximum opportunity to bring in a new Manager, and to give him the chance to bring in his own players for next season.

“I am proud of what we have achieved over the past two years. Winning the League Two Championship was a very special moment for me and keeping Walsall in contention for a League One play-off place for 44 games has been a tremendous achievement by everyone concerned.

“I need to thank a number of people, the Chairman and Board of Directors for giving me the opportunity to manage the club and for their support. I would also like to thank my staff, particularly Paul Taylor, and the players for their loyalty, commitment and hard work. I would also like to thank the fans for their support, patience and understanding.

“Finally I would like to wish Walsall Football Club every success for the future.”

Assistant Manager, Jimmy Mullen, has been placed in charge of team affairs.

Can’t say I blame him. Lots of promising youngsters that he forced to sell again and again.

    WELL DONE BONSER! YOU FOOL!!

Let our best players go and now our manager. What next for Walsall FC? I tell you what, a fight against relegation to League 2 again. Just follow Richard Money on the way out.

I didn’t like him as a manager, his tactics were far too defensive. But he gets massive kudos for standing up to Jeff Bonser and being a man of his word - his hands were tied financially, he didn’t like it, he left. At least he’s got integrity.

Well Done Jeff, once again, the club is terribly unstable, barely any players signed up for next season, no manager, no coaching system. What an amazing professional well run club we are.

I’m sure Dickie won’t be out of work for long. An outstanding job done at the Saddlers with no money and forced to sell talent.

I thought the club would be at an important crossroad during the summer but obviously Bonser has already chosen which path we’re going to go down - struggling mediocrity. It’s not so much that DD has gone but more about the club obviously demonstrating a lack of ambition for next season. Thanks for the Championship DD, a day out in Nottingham I will never forget! Shame it will take just as long to experience that again!!!!!

Hmm, although it is sad to lose Richard who hadn’t seen it coming? I’d just like to thank DD for a great couple of years. If we get the right person in then this might turn out to be a good thing. After all I dont think Richard’s transfer market dealings this season were great (and apparently he didn’t use up all of his season budget) BUT we will miss his coaching, particularly with the youngsters. I hope Richard gets a good job higher up the leagues, he is a good coach. Thanks DD!

    WHAT A SHAME!

Made a few mistakes with the media and signings but on the whole a very good organiser and coach.

    Well done mr bonser

Just don’t get it Walsall. What are you doing Bonser??? You ain’t gonna strike gold like that again. Richard Money has dragged you out of the mire to the brink of the Championship, dread to think what fate awaits you now.

This goes right the way back to when the club let Merson go. That should never have happened - if PM had been given more time then he would have got us up to the Championship easy

Thanxs DD for all your hard work the last few years. Hope you get a club with ambition like your you deserve it. BONSER WILL JUST GO AND FIND ANOTHER PUPPET HE CAN CONTROL LIKE MERSON AAARRRRGGGGHHH..

Sorry to see you go Richard
    A great job done
I am sorry you were not always given the support you should have got
More importantly Walsll goes on but can we replace Money with as good a manager ?
best wishes to Richard Money You will be snapped up by someone.
    Thanks for the memories

Am fuming!! great work Bonser, not only did you get rid of young talented players you have also got rid of the best manager we have had for a while! why can’t you have a bit of the ambition DD has shown??

Thanks DD for giving me the best day of my followong Walsall, at Swindon last year.

  16. Kev said:

I suggest we protest the Hartlepool game??

There is nothing at stake, half the team will be stripped down when the new bloke comes in.

We cannot let Jeff Bonser walk away thinking we are fine with the mess he has again caused!!

Don Happy- I seriously cant see that happening now. There would be uproar at this moment in time.

Not bothered at losing Money, can’t say I ever really liked him, his tactics or his style, granted it was successful but I always got the impression he seemed to think we should be grateful that he chose us.

However, I am bothered more by the fact that this indicates that Bonser is not giving decent funds available to whoever is going to be manager now. So well done for standing up Dickie, and our chairman has probably just started putting the nails in his coffin, he started digging his grave quite a while ago. Plummetting crowds and a very hostile crowd reaction towards him from those that remain.

  22. Tom Jebb said:

Money was good manager if it should be anyone leavin then the board should go, get the board out they are waste of time because they dont put their hand in their pocket and spend cash on players.

hope last game of the season the fans are singing get bonsor out

Im a Wolves fan and cant believe Money has gone, its obvious he has left because he had a different vision for the club than the chairman. Money wanted Championship football, and Bonser wouldnt back him for that. Sad end to a great 2 years for Walsall, i can see them back in League 2 in 2 years time!!

    Money for Wanderers! hahaha!

  34. Sim The Saddler said:

tbh im sad to see richard money go but in my opinion bonser has forced him outta the club e.g no funds and forcing him 2 sell or not offering contracts to key players for example dann, fox, keates and westood. well looks like a very hard season next year now, we need a whole new team apart from gerrard, weston and ince who i cant see staying now tbh. BONSER OUT! why didnt he just sell 2 doug ellis when he had the chance the muppet.

Is it any wonder we constantly get ridiculed for being ‘little Walsall’. While JB remains in charge there will always be the same mistakes time after time. This is a very sad day, even if not a totally surprising one and there really is no point to being a Walsall fan as they will never get anywhere by playing it safe. JB took the plaudits for his appointment he should now take the stick for his departure. Will the last one out please turn off the lights!!!

  41. SWAMPY - SADDLER said:

Like all things football, you never quite know what has gone on behind the scenes. Yes Bonser hasn’t reinvested but then we all know he likes to keep the club in the black.

Yes I am sure he paid off a few debts from the sales of Dan & Dann, but he won’t ever commit the club into debt!

Just remember there are two sides to every story and DD did us proud, whilst loosing the plot on occasion too, both with tactics and signings he was never going to use! So I say all the best DD and we move on……..

Can we all start shouting for DAVID KELLY again now????????

  42. Saddler said:

Why do the Wolves fans want Money? I thought part of the thing about McCarthy you dis-liked was his liking for long ball football. You think Money is any different?

We are very direct, very boring, very slow and quite predictable. We employ the same tactics home and away, which is keep it tight, keep a clean sheet and see if you can nick one on the break. Hence why our home record is so poor, becacuse we don’t attack teams, we let them attack us.

Even the staunchest Richard Money fan will admit his football was not very pleasing on the eye, and the only time it got you on the edge of your seat was when you came close to falling off because we’d fallen to sleep.

  43. Pete the fozzmeister said:

    Same old same old.
Well done Richard Money and thank you for what you did for the club over the last two seasons. But even you can’t make a silk purse out of a Bonser’s ear. You may be hacked off and frustrated at the fact you had to sell two starlet players when we had a REAL chance of promotion to the championship - let alone the play offs - if only you’d have been backed a little bit more financially. But how do you think the long suffering supporters feel?
Still I don’t know why I’m complaining - Joe Longthorne’s coming back to the Bonser suite and there are some great bargains to be had at the Sunday market.
Walsall FC a professional football club? Apart from this season’s magnificent players, what’s professional and football got to do with it.
Do us a favour Jeff …… get some new acts on down the Bonser suite.

Richard Money did well for the Saddlers and, with the right backing, could have taken the club further. But he obviously saw what was coming and decided to get out. I don’t know how much longer I can stand supporting a club with no ambition as much as I love the Saddlers. We have promising players who get sold on for good money but then we don’t see the money then. I am realistic that we have to sell bright players to fund further players….but 150k Walsall record signing for a player called Alan Buckley…..a balding gentleman now in his 3rd stint as manager of Grimsby amongst other clubs…..need I say more. Bettings on DD being at Coventry or Wolves next season….pretty good bet I’d say

It is absolutely irrelavent who the next manager will be. The reason for that is; he will come in as Manager of a Div 1 football club., and as such he will receive all the kudos that that positin deserves. The one thing he won’t get is any money to rebuild. It will all be loanees and free’s again
You know what, times don’t change, we have always been the same.

  51. Paul Humphreys said:

As a life long Saddlers fan, I’m used to being riding the roller coaster of emotions. However, in the cold light of day, we were the worst team ever to win a divisional title last season, we’ve played boring negative football for two years and at least we now have the chance to employ someone who will get us playing ‘the Walsall Way’ with some flair. We haven’t had that since Alan Buckley was manager. Some may say that Richard Money had his hands tied, but he had no excuse for playing the style of football we played. As for Mr Bonser, he doesn’t have the millions to throw away, but he has kept us financially afloat. If someone came forward with money to invest and had the interest of the club at heart, I’m sure he would step aside. But until then we live on a shoestring and we should be thankful for what he has done for the club.

  52. Peter Keough said:

Well done DD did us proud as For JB need I say more keeping us in the black is good but Man Utd and other clubs dont be successful by being in the black a little more risks and we might even get in the championship to play in thw west midlands league, also as for futre managers I think the following could be good DAVID KELLY, PETER TAYLOR, IAIN DOWE, RAY GRAYDON(GET SOME DISPLINE IN THE TEAM), SAMMY LEE, NIGEL CLOUGH (DONE A GREAT JOB AT BURTON)the list ie endless so there is light at the end of the tunnel as long as they have backing from JB………… wonders would never cease…….

I have been following Walsall for over 20 years now and for the last 3 years from living in the US. I never liked Bonser and never will. He needs to sell up and open a stall on the Sunday market if he is that concerned about money. Money as many oyther managers have done before, tried to move the club forward. I am sick of living in the wings of the other midlands clubs, when i know we could be up there exceeding the expectations. Look at Reading and Wigan, they have the finacial support and have made it to the top flight.

  56. Super Saddler said:

Pete Waterman come and save your favourite club, your the richest fan for Walsall :D
With Bonser we will have some pathetic unknown, unproven manager.
With a new chairman we would get someone such as the Bournemouth manager Bond or Ian Holloway :D
Or the ex Brentford and Leicester manager, cant remember first name, but he was something Allan.

I’m sorry that Richard Money has decided to leave Walsall, but it’s not surprising. It must be soul-destroying working for a chairman who is tighter than a camel’s “armpits” in a sandstorm! We had a real chance of getting into the play-offs this season until Bonser sold our best players and didn’t replace them. We will never move forward with Bonser as chairman - he is killing the dream. With Bonser in charge: what is the point in supporting Walsall FC? Oh, and congrats to WBA on their impending promotion to the Premiership (that’s especially for We8Wba and Optimistic Wolf!!).

  59. saddlers fan said:

Im am just so fed up what JB has done this season is criminal he is killing everything about WFC the fans are fed up & are gonna start to stay away. If he does not want to invest in an ambitous club then take youe pension fund and go save another club like Bournemouth maybe you can get them on the cheap.Time to go now jeff you got a good pension from a small club nows the time to be fair the club and its fans have given you a good life and retirement, if your not gonna go nows the time to pay them back.

back in the real world nigel clough can’t be a bad shout, and as a gamble…tommy mooney as manager…he ain’t gonna cost naff all and has a wealth of experience and/or jimmy walker back in some capacity!!
realsitically it’s going to be someone who has a mediocre record in the lower leagues i.e. martin allen, leroy resoinier
buckley, as much a legend he is would be a bad call.

  64. Karl said:

Nice one. Once again Walsall are a laughing stock. Claims of not being a selling club are obviously false when promising players are sold on - and Cov are expected to cash in by flogging the pair to a Prem club in the summer. Bet JB didn’t include any clauses to get more money, just looked at the short term as usual. Still, got to pay for the shareholders’ meals at the AGM somehow, eh?
Sick of seeing teams we left behind show ambition when we don’t. Wigan, Reading, Stoke, Blackpool (who had 3,500 last time I went up there, and about 2,000 of them were Walsall) - even Colchester overtook us and showed ambition last season by having a crack for the Championship play-offs, even if they haven’t done it this year.
Colin Lee had it right. He came in and made certain changes so the club was more 21st Century professional. But that cost money and he had to go. Back to the fudge it and hope amateur antics.

Sorry to say it, but we’re a joke and not a very funny one. SHOW SOME AMBITION, JB, OR GET OUT!

  65. Mr.Ambition said:

Twice now a greedy owner has missed out on Walsall being successful and increasing their fan-base by refusing to invest at critical times.
A couple of years back in the championship, just after xmas, we were on the verge of the play-offs, a small investment to keep Baird, O’neill etc, we could have been in the prem.
This year he not only sells our two best players for half of their value, he keeps the transfer kitty and fails AGAIN.
He now thinks having the largest advertising board in Europe is going to stimulate the population of one of England’s biggest towns.
8 season ticket holders in our family all refusing to renew because they have had enough of NO AMBITION.

  66. TOM said:

Best wishes DD. Thanks for everything especially the Championship.
Anybody know what David Platt is doing nowadays. I understand that he was 2nd in the running when Money was appointed.

  67. SWAMPY - SADDLER said:

Next Mgr has to be a name that the fans know, like and want, otherwise the club is destined for a struggling relegation battle.

Really sad about what has been allowed to happen at WFC. JB has obviously persuaded the board that ano risk strategy is right, so that they can all take their share.

A complete clear out is the only solution to that. But I don’t think that will happen and we will continue in the same vein.

    LIKE I SAID……REAL SHAME!
Sorry Saddlers, but I will be one those picking my games next season, until I see some commitment. 32 years a fan and this is really depressing. Worse case scenario when a manager resigns!

Bonser saved Walsall, but he also took its heart. As for Money, He did a great job and has to be admired for his integrity.
