Defiant Mick McCarthy has warned Wolves’ play-off rivals the race for the top six could still ‘turn on its head’.
Wolves go into tonight’s must-win game in hand against Cardiff trailing sixth-placed Crystal Palace by five points with nine to play for.
Palace have to go to third-placed Hull on Saturday before hosting Burnley on the final day, and fourth-placed Bristol City – eight points ahead of Wolves – travel to eighth-placed Sheffield United and host Preston.
Watford, who are six ahead of McCarthy’s men, would appear to have the easiest finish, entertaining relegated Scunthorpe before travelling to Blackpool.
“There are three games for us and two for Palace and it could all turn on its head just yet,” said the Wolves boss. “I would also look at Watford and Bristol City because they aren’t absolutely clear yet. It will be an interesting couple of weeks.”
Meanwhile, Kevin Foley is likely to find himself at right-back for tonight’s crunch clash – despite winning praise for his excellent contribution in midfield on Saturday.
The former Luton defender was man of the match in the 1-1 draw against Ipswich, despite switching from right-back to central midfield when Dave Edwards was injured.
His performance won rich praise from McCarthy, but the boss hinted the 23-year-old would revert to his regular role.
“Filling in is one thing, but doing it on a regular basis is completely different,” said McCarthy. “But at least I know he can play there.Kevin can play – he’s a footballer and if you put him anywhere, he’d do a steady job. But he was outstanding.”
McCarthy remained tightlipped on whether he would recall captain Gary Breen at Neill Collins’ expense.
Apart from conceding the free kick which led to Tommy Miller’s last-gasp equaliser, Breen was largely solid against Ipswich after replacing Edwards.
Breen’s arrival shunted Collins to right-back, and the Scot’s performances have been criticised by fans.
“Gary did really well and that shows his level of fitness and how well he’s looked after himself after being out for so long,” said McCarthy.

gary breen no !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Foley made Olofinjana looked ordinary!
irishwolves what are u on!!!!
id rather have him than donkey wooden legs collins!
sort it out son!
So this means Neill Collins will still be playing a part for the remainder of the season?
Not impressed with foley mark little far better foley struggles to get past the half way line when playing right back
“Apart from conceding the free kick which led to Tommy Miller’s last-gasp equaliser, Breen was largely solid against Ipswich after replacing Edwards”
He was ripped to shreds down the right hand side every time Ipswich ran at him!
What is going on, where do these quotes come from E&S, do you send a reporter to the ground or do you just phone McCarthy after the game?
mad mick out richard money in
Dicky Dosh on his way????
For once I find myself nodding in agreement with Mick Mac.His reading of the situation is, in my very humble opinion, bang on. All that is required is the difficult bit. Wolves winning three games on the trot. Not done that very often this year. Got to play Breen Not Collins surely! The rest as you were. They look great going forward, it’s getting the ball over the line is the problem. I think the order should be shoot on sight. Go get ‘em we can still do this.
Up The Wolves.
HOW MUCH MORE BULL DO WE HAVE TO LISTEN TOO FROM MCARTHY..SEASONS OVER DUMMY..DO THE RIGHT THING AND RESIGN..SO WE CAN GET A QUALITY MANAGER IN..AND SORT YOUR MESS OUT.
WE WANT MUPPET OUT..SAY WE WANT MUPPET OUT!!
mad mick said kevin can play anywhere perhaps he will be in goal tonight
The season rests on this game now. We must play better than we did against the Albion and Ipswich.
I’m not sure if Kightly will be match fit but its worth a gamble starting with him today.
the only surprises we want is morgan to open his mouth and say to you “your fired” and you to play a team tonight that is worthy of wearing the shirt, ie; henessey, little, craddock, elokobi, D ward, kightly, jarvis, olifinjana, rosa, eastwood, ebanks-blake. subs; potter, stack, keogh, breen, D jones. MM OUT NOW!!!!!
Whats happened to TerryJSABaggie???
It must be his signing on day, or he got lost when he went out yesterday to by a road atlas, i mean it’s 1 thing buying 1 and it another thing reading 1.
GO ON< SUPRISE US & GIVE FREDDY A RUN!! MUPPET!
It will be interesting but not for Wolves, we will have difficulty scoring enough goals starting tonight1!
13: muppetout. I disagree with your team, it would get ripped apart in this league. Thats my opinion.
Still time for surprises?
The only surprise is if he still here next season….
We are far to-late now get the Youngster back–Little-Jones–Time to go MM you have had your chance–Crazy Dave
I think team for tonight should be: Hennessey, Foley, Gray(left back), Breen, Craddock, Kightly, Olofinjana, Potter, Jarvis, Ebanks blake, Eastwood. subs: keogh, stack, Gibson, Kyle, Little
like the team muppetout… but will never happen!!
more likely the usual crowd of ward, colins etc!
this is the one thing that really winds me up about MM, if the team isn’t working he will not change things around, just keeps going with the same players… aparently we have the biggest squad in the league.. so why not use them?
BUT it isn’t over yet, so come on lads!
The return of DJ tonight should serve as a reminder of past mistakes:

Still time for surprises !
Is that a flying pig I see !
It will be interesting to see if the owner turns up for the game tonight or goes to see Liverpool !
I think Richard Money would be a great shout as the next Wolves boss. He has done wonders with Walsall and he wouldn’t have to move house. Jez, tell Steve Morgan that there is a successful local manager available and he has to act now. You can probably get hold of him by ringing Anfield’s reception. They should be able to tell him when he turns up there tonight for the game.
Richard Money’s Gold n’ Black Army!
So three games to get promoted. Just shows how terrible a league this is that we have played so badly and are still in contention. In the last 24 league games (half a season) we have won 7. If we maintain that form next year we may well get out of this division but not in the direction we want!
20 - Gray got injured at half time on Saturday and is a doubt for tonight. I would play Mark Little at left back.
As for the rest of you banging on about EAstwood - he aint good enough and he doesn’t work hard enough. When he’s on the ball he’s too selfish - end of. You can’t play him with SEB as there too similar.
Up the Wolves. Muppet is KING
A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO MICK SAID HE KEPT FREDDY BEACUSE HE SAID HE COULD BE THE MISSING LINK TO THE PLAY-OFFS AND SATURDAY MICK SAID ABOUT FREDDY “IN THE STANDS WATCHING I HOPE” !! MICK DID NOT STOP THE TRANSFER !! MORGAAN DID !! MORGAN GET THIS CLOWN OUT AND KEEP FREDDY AT THE CLUB !! BIG SAM IN !! FREDDY A WANDERER FOR LIFE !!
27 - do you think keogh is playing well enough to keep his place along side ebanks blake because i don’t think he is. any other player would have been rested by now. he has had a very poor last 4-5 games!!! and looking at the other strikers at the club ie elliott, kyle eastwood, freddie is the best of the substitutes. i do agree that little should be left back f gray is not fit. as much as i like his effort and style i do feel Elokobi is a liability at present!!!
i hope you win tonight, just so palace dont take there foot off the gas on saturday, then i hope you loose at cov boing boing we,ll never play you agen
When has MM ever stated something that has been fact and actually panned out?
Not looking at the league table must have surprised him after the last game when he realised we weren’t in the top two!
Has no idea and I think at least Cardiff will get a draw here.
Famous phrases come to mind, such as, “clutching at straws” and “the final straw that broke the camel’s back”
Sky Blue thinking, Mick!
no.15 as said it for me give freddy a run out or play him in goal nothing surprise’s me with dopey mick, still good luck tonight lads.
5. > HAHA.
BRILLIANT MICK,YOU SHOULD BE ON STAGE MATE,I DONT KNOW HOW THESE DINGLES PUT UP WITH YA,BRITAINS GOT TALENT IN MAD MICK,,,HAVIN A PARTY THE MOWBRAY WAY,,,IN STYLE OF COURSE,,,OH YES
Has McCarthy finnaly started to look at the table now!
What blarney, which probably accounts for why he gets jobs at all. He just isn’t good enough to hold down a job for more than a couple of years before his limitations are exposed and he is out on his ear again.
Unfortunately, this manager is going to get protection from Moxey, who has now picked 6 management failures and knows that he’ll be out on his ear with McCarthy!
