Blame yourself if you don’t vote

With reference to the letter from David Jackson – while I agree with his comments about the European Constitution, which Gordon Brown is trying desperately to pass off as the Lisbon Treaty, the fault lies with those who profess to have no faith in any of the three main political parties and refuse to vote.

I can sympathise with these people to a certain extent, but their apathetic stance is what gives this government the liberty to impose their ideas upon the majority of people in this country who want a referendum.

I feel none of the three main parties can offer me freedom of speech and the choice of being governed by democratically elected MPs. The public is being denied the right to voice their opinions on Europe in general and the Constitution in particular.

We have been lied to by successive governments about the benefits of being members. What benefits? We are being well and truly taxed up to the hilt to pay for other countries to reap the benefit.

Edward Heath promised us faithfully that the Common Market as it was then was merely a trade agreement. Some trade agreement! We can’t even deport terrorists from the country now because of this so-called trade agreement. We must consider their human rights and our own rights do not figure in the equation.

Yet our MPs cannot understand why we hold them in such contempt, especially the three representing Wolverhampton, who all toed the party line and voted as they were told to.

I suggest those people who refuse to vote because they feel that no party represents their views, do the same as I do, and vote for another party, and then politicians would have to listen to us.

There is no reason why you cannot vote for UKIP, a party committed to taking this country out of Europe completely. With enough MPs from a party like that in Parliament, the other parties would have to sit up and take notice.

If you prefer to sit at home and not vote, then you truly deserve to be represented by the politicians you now have, who appear to be both deaf and blind.

Exactly. There is no excuse anymore. There are multiple parties that are not puppets of the EU now. You don’t have to vote Labour, Tory or Lib Dem. It’s time we cleared all the rotten old parties out and made way for the new.

UKIP, Libertarian, EDP, you name it. Voting for the old band of prirates is no longer an option, IF you want a free and democratic Britain.

Problem is if you put a three legged donkey up in Rowley it will get voted in if it has a labour rosette on it. Most vote by habit.. what their Dad did, what their husband does etc and then spends the next 4 years moaning.

I’m with you Matt Davies- I’m voting Green. They’re the only ones who care about ordinary people rather than big business and fat cats.

You guys may not have noticed but it isn’t a general election at the moment.
I don’t vote by party, I get to know the people standing for office when I can.
Someone I find to be honest, reliable and willing to stand up for what they believe is right - to me is far preferable to someone who will vote the party line of ANY party.

Many people never bother to vote, yet whinge about the choice of those of us who do vote.
Sure, the current office holder can be crap. But they had more votes than the other candidates from those of us who voted.
Don’t always like who other people vote for but it is their right to get whoever they want into office.

One way of improving the pool of politicians.
Get 100,000 people who think like you. All join the same party. Doesn’t matter which one.
Guess who will have the majority votes on who stands as a candidate at the next election.

Make sure you fill the form in using ink, not pencil.

And further, take into account the doubts over the ligitemacy of this election in the Midlands, considering the staggering number of postal vote applications and the controversy surrounding the manner in which votes are handled after they have been put in the ballot box.

    scrap the postal vote!

It is a vote by not voting !!!!

True, it is a vote by not voting.
But the decision about who represents each area is then made by those of us who vote for a particular party or person on the day.

You may not like who we vote into office but it is our decision as voters, rather than decisions made by those who don’t vote.
You may not like it but that is our system of voting.
Have you tried running for office yourself?

Agree with martin. the trouble is you cannot judge what happens in the local elections with the big general election. The government will offer us all increases in tax credit, pension credits, higher minimum wage and they will swing all the voters again who vote for whats best in their pocket. So i’m sorry to all the tories out there because i think in the long run their victories will be short lived.

I thought London was an intelligent area full of people who know what they are doing. Who in the hell voted for a numpty like champagne boris to be mayor. I’ve seen it all. Now i know we are doomed as a nation!

Hang on..what’s the pointing in voting if the validity of the voting system has been brought into question? You’re assuming everything is above board..as we’ve seen, that isn’t always the case.

it doesnt matter if you vote or not, if you do
you give them the right to take control of you
do whatever they like with you just like the cattle going to market, and your votes dont count anyway. its all cut and dry
before the elections start, the ones behind the desk are the ones who vote them in.

in some parts of the world not voting is illegal,i always vote in local and national elections because in years gone by our forefathers have been transported/executed for trying to get us the right to elect whom we want to represent us.i will be the first to agree that at the moment we are ruled by crooks but we still have the right to vote them out,if you dont use your right to vote the e.u will find a way to take that right away from you.
