Wolves blog: Put the pain aside

wolvesbadge.jpg

Of course it hurts; it always hurts when we lose to the Albion.  But now is the time for fans to put that loss aside and try to remain positive for the 4 remaining fixtures, writes blogger Nathan Lloyd.

I applaud MM for trying to stay upbeat and say that the only difference in the game was that Albion took their chance and we didn’t.  Presumably this sound bite is an attempt to keep morale in the camp high for those remaining 4 games?

The reality however was that Mick must have been watching a different game, because Albion looked like champions elect and we unfortunately failed to match them in any department.

As impressive as Greening and Koren were, I thought Olofinjana and Gibson were equally as poor and off the pace.  Jody Craddock put in one of the best performances from a Wolves player all season and he really was a one man defence, with Neill Collins again showing that this is probably a division too high for his abilities and I think the occasion got to Elokobi and Foley.

Michael Gray should be applauded for his genuine effort, but often looked like he was treading water and Jarvis on the other flank rarely found the room to use his pace and skill effectively.

Up front SEB was marshalled out of the game by the Albion rearguard and I thought Keogh played some decent stuff but lacked that killer edge which he needs to add to his game.

Although we could have nicked it at the end, it would have been unjust on an Albion side that, although it pains me to say it, thoroughly deserved to head back up the A41 with all 3 points.

Right that’s enough about the stripy lot.  Although I’m mature enough to admit we were outplayed, it’s no fun to write it down and laud over their obvious qualities.

Four games to go and the reality is that we will probably need to win our 3 homes games and at least get a draw away to Coventry if we are to stand any chance of a play-off place.  The battle begins against the Tractor Boys on Saturday.  Although Ipswich have a formidable home record, they have only managed 3 wins out of 21 games on the road this season, one of the worst records in the division.

And with a weird quirk of fate, tomorrow the fixture list has thrown up the unlikely scenario of the 3rd placed team playing 4th, 5th playing 6th and of course 7th playing 8th.

Realistically only 6th place is left up for grabs and it’s make or break tomorrow.  Lose or even draw and our season is effectively done and dusted.

But lets see what happens over the next couple of games before we begin the inquisition and the dissection as to where this season has gone wrong and which players have failed to deliver.

On a lighter note, this weekend fans attending the Ipswich game will be asked to vote for their player of the season.

We are not exactly spoilt for choice are we?  It could be Kightly, although he really hasn’t played enough games.  Michael Gray is an outside bet and Keogh will also be in the running.  Although a real find, SEB has only been here since the January transfer window and I think you need to contribute over an entire season to be truly in the running.

That’s why I think it will almost certainly be young Hennessey who will deservedly walk away with the crown at the end of the season.  He’s had a superb campaign and its great news that he has pledged his allegiance to the gold and black cause next season.  He gets my vote, does he get yours?

I’m also looking forward to seeing Kightly return on Saturday.  We don’t have an abundance of players that really excite and get you on the edge of your seat, but Michael is one of them.  I’ve no doubt that had he been fit all season, we would be comfortably higher up the league.

We need another patient and passionate crowd on Saturday.  The Molineux roar was magnificent against the Albion.  It understandably went quiet after it became apparent that we were being outplayed for large parts of the evening.

Whilst the top 6 is still achievable, fans need to believe and back a young team that will be smarting as much we all are from Tuesday night’s loss.

Good luck to the lads tomorrow.

have to agree, kightly has been a big miss and i think the team selections have cost us at various times this season, too many players out of position and never really had a settled first team…very few players picking themselves. candidly even if we made the playoffs we will struggle and if by some chance we made the prem mr morgan would need to spend a big chunk of the 30 million quid he promised….i live in hope

Mathematically the blog is right, but anyone who has watched this team knows we have no chance of making that 6th place.

Good blog. Albion played Pompey off the park for one half so I don’t think we should see our performance in too darker light! We can still do it and it would be good to see the fans give everything in support til the end of the season.

Trouble is teams which have been having bad runs, havn’t won for however many games, always seem to break their poor run of form when visiting the Wolves.
Therefore I think we are finished and could even end up in 10 or 12 place.

Whatever happens between now and the start off next season it has to be positive and pro-active,the sqaud is unbalancened. The public relations between the club and the fans is poor at best disgraceful at worst.

    All the best tommorow

another excellent blog, in full agreement with the albion match points, they were a well-marshalled and polished act, fully deserving of the title which i am in no doubt they will lift. as for us, i am not very confident of anyone else making the play-offs but the 4 teams there already, palace have hit form at the right time and look good, sorry for being pessimistic but 1 point from the last 2 games has scuppered our chances i believe.

    1. lets not forget, its only a game of football and like you said wew wre beaten by the better team.
    2. quality counts for an awful lot in this league and lets face it we lack quality at the back and we lack quality where it matters in the middle of the park.
    3. we still have it in our own hands to grab a place in the playoffs but it really is make or break on saturday.
    4. michael gray gets my vote for player of the season, he is a perfect example of a true professional who never gives up and has always tried.
    5. the support this season has i believe been outstanding apart from when we were having that bad run which has put us in this position.
6.I believe and every other fan needs to believe for the remainder of the season, lets remember MM did say it would take him 3 seasons so lets get behind him and the team and ensure that we have that day out at wembley in may, god it would be a fantastic acheivement if we were to pull it off.

come on you wolves lets stick together and roar them on to victory for the next 4 games.

keep believing and anything is possible

After watching the game on Tuesday, i would agree about Collins. The overriding feeling about your squad is that you lack creativity, sure you have Kites, but when he is not playing it looks all huff and puff. Hens looks a fantastic keeper and has years ahead of him to get even better. SEB although disappointing on Tuesday looks a definate 20 goal a season Championship striker. You will probably need to win three from four to make the playoffs and that will be tough, but not impossible.
All the best for the rest of the season.

Loving the optomism Nath, but I think it has to be 4 out of 4. Should we get into the playoffs it is probably better than the team between mid September and mid March deserve, but we have to be foot to the floor going in to have any chance.

Agree about the stripey monkeys as well they looked too good for us.

My only gripe the other night was Gibson. He looked a passenger until the second half when he played alright until they scored. He turned to the South Bank to get the crowd fired up and then hits the ball straight to their back 4 from the kick off. Potter for me must start tomorrow, to anchor the midfield.

Nath, I know you are only trying to stay positive my friend, but really, c’mon on.

We’ve been here before where we need a minor miracle just to get in the top six. This team doesn’t deserve a play-off place, we have been lousy most of the season. I’ve sat there game after game bored out of my little mind.

After watching Tuesday’s game against a team that will be battling out with the Premiership bottom 6 last season, we are poles apart.

How many of our team would survive in that division? Hennessey, SEB, Kightly, Jarvis…. erm, anymore? If Mick is to stay around next season, he needs to stop the pal act with Neill Collins and get some quality in at centre back. Dump Gibson, Olofinjana, Potter, Henry and co and bring in some decent quality in the centre of the park.

I think next season this young team will come good, but I’m afraid we need to write this season off as another bad one.

  18. Weston Wolf said:

For all we may love or hate about Mick McCarthy the most pertinent fact of his tenure is that our players of the year for both seasons are likely to be Matt Murray (2006/7) and Wayne Hennessy (2007/8).
    Perhaps that says it all.

  19. wolvesmod said:

Sorry but i disagree with the Jody Craddock bit. He should of gone straight through the bloke in that tackle leading to the goal (i think it was Phillips) it was a half hearted challenge, i’m sorry but you’ve got to win those 50/50’s on the edge of your own area. It was an awful challenge. The least you can give away is a free kick, and that’s better than a goal.

  20. Pondlife said:

13 - It’s patently obvious that you don’t really understand football. Let go?!?!?! Your not really a fan are you? Me, i’m not letting go until it’s mathematically impossible that we won’t make the playoffs. Whats the point of calling yourself a fan and turning up to games if you believe it’s a foregone conclusion? That type attitude is counter productive and is definately not wanted at molineux, we need belief and passion for the fight, something you seem to lack.

Picking Gibson was a signal of our intent from the off on Tuesday. For a player educated in the Manchester Utd school of football, he certainly looked well out of his depth. He has no pace, and he think’s he’s got the ability to dictate the play and spray balls around, but lets face it, he’s a poor mans Johnathon Greening.

Playing David Edwards would have been a much better option. Not sure he’s 100% fit yet, but he wasn’t even on the bench. I think the game highlighted what we’ve known since Kites got injured in the same fixture back in November…we lack creativity.

We have too many ‘in between’ midfielders. By that, I mean that they’re neither attack minded or real ball winning defensive midfielders. Gibson and George just made up the numbers on Tuesday. A successful midfield always need a holding player and an attacking player. Thats why Lampard and Gerrard can’t play together. All the top teams have them. Hargreaves and Scholes, Essien and Lampard, Alonso and Gerrard. We even had our own mix of Rae and Cameron in our promotion winning season.

By I hate to end on a negative note, so my player of the season vote goes to Mickey Gray.

No flair, no creativity and the only reason we are in with a shout is because this division is so pants.

I agree with the fact that Albion were the better team but they weren’t miles better and I thought once again the ref was awful. The fact is they were holding on at the end, due to missed chances. Let’s look at the Hawthorns. Apart from 20 minutes, we more than matched them.Too many players that did well at Bristol went missing and we would had key players missing.
We will not need 10 points from the remaining games. I think Palace have got a terrible run in and will be lucky to get a further 5 points. Beat Ipswich and their chance will have gone!

If you look at the table, even if we win our last four games we are still way off on the goal difference. So realistically we are waiting for other teams to slip up.

It has been a poor season and I think I have made my feelings well known about the management. However I do take on board the importance of staying positive until it is impossible, so here’s hoping that kightly makes a big difference on Saturday. With him, Jarvis, SEB and keogh then going forward we will look good but the rest of the midfield and at the back we are a shambles!

    Players of the season:

    Hennessey and Gray.

Hi Nath - good blog, agreed with most, except I thought Olifinjana had a steady game, he played OK. I think you have to remember he was playing in the centre of the park on his own. Did Gibson actually touch the ball with the exception of that one shot? He was also playing against 2 very good centre midfielders on his own so he is going to get exposed! SEB was made to look average, not because Albions defence played particularly well but because we were playing the long ball everytime due to having 1 central midfielder!

Gibson to go back to Man U please! Collins to be put down! Elokobi to go back to training and do passing lessons for 15 hours straight every day!

Micky Grey for player of the season. What he lacks in ability he makes up for in work rate and seems to love playing for us! Hennessay a close 2nd! If MM was choosing it would definitely be Grey as he “puts a shift in”.
When will MM learn that the ball should put the shift in as it doesn’t get tired. No albion player put a shift in, they just passed better then us! (Elokobi take note!!!)

  33. Redge999 said:

Guys I might upset some people here!, lets start with the team Hennesey good goalkeeper, elekobi, in the same mold as Mo Camara, no idea what he is going to do, not good enough, foley, steady but lacks pace, collins, massive weak link not good enough, craddock, decent player needs young legs along side him. Jarvis ok, kightley, fantastic, george, most overated player ive ever seen in a wolves shirt, henry, under rated player, would be quality if other midfielder was good, seb, looks very good, keogh, what is he? not good enough im afraid we need 2 strikers who look like they will get goals! Gray done very well in 2nd half of season, to be honest we are an average side, mick has struggled and managers like johnson and brown have proved whats possible with an average side, this division is the worst ive seen for a while, yet despite 6 million pound of investement we are worse off than this time last year, we could make the play-offs still but that would overshadow what a poor season we have had, the poor football we have played. Its not good enough

Collins - Signed from Sunderland reserves (enough said!)
Craddock - Conceded record number of goals in premiership
Elokobi - Signed from relegated Colchester
Jarvis - Signed from Div. 1 Gillingham
Olofinjana - Signed from Norwegian league
Gibson - Man U youngster who will never play for their first team
Gray - 34 year old trier but well past his best
Keogh - Signed from Scunthorpe when in Div 1.
Ebanks-Blake - Signed from Plymouth, did anyone else come in for him when we signed him - no! (however looks good at times)

Compare that to Albions team and there is no comparison, they are miles ahead with some good premiership quality players. We have none. With this team we will not get promoted, even if Kightly returns.

Morgan needs to plan a new direction, with or without McCarthy.

Although your quite accurate with the team, remember that Albion have a wage structure which allows them to have the ‘Premiership’ quality players. We don’t. When Mick rebuilt the side, I’m sure the likes of Phillips and Gera would have been far too expensive in terms of salary.

Nice of you to say SEB looks good at times. He looks a great acquisition, I think your too harsh.

And so what if players are signed from lower leagues, that how players progress. Thats what football is all about.

Look at the Albion side on Tuesday night.

Leon Barnett - Signed from Luton
Roman Bednar - on Loan from Hearts
Zoltan Gera - Signed from Ferebcvaros in Hungary
    Carl Hoefkens - Stoke
Robert Koren - Lillestrom (Norway like George)

    Do you get my drift?

Nice blog Nathan, rightly gracious in defeat to a far superior outfit.
I hate having to post my comment being so negative about the team I’ve supported through mainly thin for the last 36 years but let’s face it, we have papered over far too many cracks this season with last minute equalisers and winners just to stay in touch with the top six. Until we get some genuine class in vital areas of the park we are always going to struggle. It goes without saying our lack of pace in the defensive areas was always going to a major concern. I wonder if Wolves have ever fielded so many clumsy players who look so uncomfortable in posession?

Collins: Repeatedly trips over the ball and leaves a stubborn toe in resulting in countless penalties.

Elokobi: Great bloke came over to the fans after Bristol match but passes to the opposition in bad areas too many times for me.

Olifinjana: Likes to play in his slippers, another loses posession in bad areas.

Foley: Looks frightened to death when he receives the ball. What does he really offer? Seldom gets forward and is far too weak.

Gibson,Henry,R.Edwards,Ward and any other fringe players not mentioned below are simply not good enough to play for Wolves.

    Players who are:
Jarvis and Kightly on the wings. We have been starved of this exciting partnership all season.

SEB and Freddie up front is potentially devastating, better than anything this league has to offer. I like Keogh but third choice in my book.

Our Goalkeepers are excellent, it’s probably because of all the practice they get!

Dave Edwards not seen enough but looks promising.

Mark Little is surely a better player than Foley from what we’ve seen. The same should be said for Dan Jones at left back.

Finally Mickey Gray who will receive my vote who epitomises what the Wolves fans wanted to see on Tuesday night. He has played in various positions this season and been outstanding in many of these games. Certainly in the last few I recall him being taken off also when you could’ve picked any number to be replaced before him. He hasn’t moaned just encouraged, a true pro and credit to his profession.

I think that’s maybe 9 i’ve mentioned to be part of the squad next season. Please Mr Morgan can we have 9 more with proven quality to win the Championship next season in an entertaining style worthy of upholding the great name of Wolverhampton Wanderers.

As a Baggie I have to agree with Cpt Wolves. As well as the ones he mentions we have Miller-Man City reserves, Brunt- Sheff Wed, Albrechtsen-Danish League. You won’t get Prem ’stars’ to come down to our division. The secret is to pick up players with the right attitude and then to blend them.

While I agree about Johnson and Brown having average players, the similarity ends there. If Hull go up playing their style they will come straight back down. We’ve been there and got the T-shirt. Bristol City and hopefully ourselves if we get up could do a Reading. Nothings guaranteed but hard work and organisation only get you so far. Ask Derby.

Don’t know why we’re talking about it on here but as a season ticket holder I agree a contract with the club for my seat. What they choose to do with the others is up to them.

No chance of Bristol City doing a Reading !!
Can’t score goals in the Championship and would have to invest heavily to have any chance of obtaining 20 points next seaason.
    Agree with you regarding Hull.
The way the Premiership is funded now none of the top six teams in the Championship at present could have confidence in surviving one season without a massive injection of quality players.

Am i missing the point? what woulg getting promoted this year actually do? (apart from the obvious cash) with our direct play we would soon be doing a derby! under the current management we have had the same problems all year and NONE have been addressed-terrible partnerships at the back, similar players playing in the midfield, players playing out of position, favourites,no creativity,no end product and pretty poor entertainment IMO.
how would we fair next year vs ronaldo, rooney, torres, adebayor etc? or even kitson, carew, yakubu, owen, berbatov? i know……………it would be embarrassing! fact.
we need a new man in who plays attacking, passionate football-mick does’nt fit the bill.
we also need atleast 6 first team players-2 centre backs,2 centre mids,a different type of striker(not kyle!) and a player that can create somethng out of nothing(maybe we already have 1 in freddy?)
little should play instead of foley, elokobi will improve, jarvis and kightly are top class at this level(if played correctly) and in seb we have a goal getter(25 a season)
the hard part will be finding teams to take our rubbish away_ATLEAST 15 players that i can think of! we are too poor to go up this year!

If Hull go up I’d guarantee they would get a lower points total than Derby this season.

I’d have thought the West Bromwich Albion Football Club supporter who starts the ‘Give us a W’ chant is probably up there as well.

Give us an L…. Or what about the Dutch team NAC Breda? The full version of that is Nooit Opgeven Altijd Doorzetten Aangenaam Door Vermaak En Nuttig Door Ontspanning Combinatie Breda!

We have had a lot of must win games but tomorrow is surely last chance saloon for rescuing something out of what has been largely a disappointing season.
If we get in the top six then we have every chance of winning the play off cause the other teams in there are nothing special. If we don’t then you have to question how much progress we have made in the last 12 months. It can be said that the fact that we have never had Kightly and Jarvis fit at the same time is a reason why we haven’t been better as an attacking team. But defensively we have not improved and in midfield all the players have been inconsistent.
The goalkeeper will get my vote for player of the season cause although a number of players have played well for a couple of months I think he is the only one to maintain a high standard all season.

  80. Happy_baggie said:

Cpt - I was going to point out that there are more letters in wolverhampton wanders football club than in west bromwich albion football club - but there are some fans on here who would see that as reason why wolves are better than albion.

I can see it now - “we have more fans than you AND more letters - so we are the best”.

You may not be a bigger club, but i conceed that you are a longer one.

    Hennessey also deserves credit

Elokobi great attitude, hope he can contine to improve, time on his side
