Mowbray sure stars will stay

Tony MowbrayAlbion boss Tony Mowbray hopes derby match-winners Zoltan Gera and Kevin Phillips will stay at The Hawthorns because of the thrilling football that beat Wolves.

Albion’s out-of-contract duo applied the killer touch to clinch Black Country derby glory for Mowbray last night and send the Baggies to the top of the Championship.

And Mowbray believes the brand of football that proved too good for Wolves could also persuade goalscorer Gera and provider Phillips to sign up in the summer.

“We’re in the era of Bosman and if players want to let their contracts run out and go elsewhere then I’ve got no problems with that,” said Mowbray.

“I hope both Kevin and Zoltan recognise that this team plays a brand of football that accentuates their talents.

“If they want to stay then great, if they don’t then there’ll be no falling out with anyone. We’ll move on, bring other players in and hopefully progress their careers.

“I’m pretty hopeful and confident that will get things sorted out with Kevin. It is dragging on, but these things take time sometimes.”

Phillips’ contract talks have stalled, but fresh negotiations are planned in the next few weeks between the player’s advisors and Albion chairman Jeremy Peace.

Gera’s future is believed to hinge on the outcome of the promotion challenge with Albion hopeful Premier League status would persuade the Hungarian captain to stay.

Phillips last night laid on the only goal of the Molineux derby for Gera, earning the praise of Mowbray.

“Kevin gets lots of plaudits for the goals he’s scores,” said Mowbray. “But I see every day in training the quality he possesses.

“He took a 40-yard pass out of the air, skipped past his man and had the presence of mind to square for Zoltan for a tap-in.”

Games left: Sat, Apr 19: Norwich(A); Mon, Apr 28: Southampton (H); Sun, May 4: QPR (A).

Sad to say that if West Brom do go up then Phillips and Gera are unlikely to star for them in the Premiership.

Gera will be snapped up by one of the bigger clubs in the Premiership…i.e. Wigan, Middlesborough, Sunderland etc.

Phillips won’t have the legs to hack it back in the Premiership - fact

The truth from the other night was that Albion were marginally better, in that they passed it around in midfield well and too many of our players had an off day ie Elokobi, Collins, Gibson, Keogh.
The harsh reality for Albion fans is that they have only got as many players capable of playing at a good level as Wolves. We have Murray/Hennessey, Kightley, Ebanks-Blake, Olifinjana and Jarvis and others might adapt. As for Albion, they have Gera, Greening, Morrison and Phillips as a bit part player and possibly Miller.
If you go up, get signing or you will be straight back down!

Right southbank barmy army there’s a little button on the left hand side of the keyboard called caps lock, can you please turn it off, although if its too hard for you get your mother out of your bed and ask her to help you with it.

ANd as for the bitter, jealous Dingles who don’t agree that they were totally outplayed lets look at the stats:

Wolves: Shots on target - 5
    Shots off target - 3
    Total - 8

West Brom: Shots on target - 9
    Shots off target - 6
    Total - 15

So we had nearly twice as many shots as you not to mention having more possession.
You just have to be realistic and plan for trips to Swansea next year while we go to Chelsea, Arsenal and Man Utd. Now before you say we will lose all of them i’m not bothered because we have a squad capable of survivng in that league.

Lets hope we draw you in the cup because we won’t play you again in the league for a long time.

WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS..PLAY OFF FINAL WINNERS 2008..IN STYLE OF COURSE..OH YES.

Steve Bruce, Roy Keane, Steve Coppell and Co must be licking their lips looking at some of the dross that could be playing in the Premiership next season.

Stoke, Hull, Bristol City and Watford would be racing certainties to return immediately to the Championship.
West Brom could conceivably stay up one season, but probably only if they were lucky again and played someone like Portsmouth (last time they were up) who rolled over and died as a last match escape route.
Wolves can spend big-time but even £30 million is unlikely to guarantee survival.
Crystal Palace or Cardiff would give Derby’s dire season points total a run for their money.
If anyone could survive it would likely be Charlton (who won’t make it though) as they are still receiving Parachute payments.

Sadly the Premiership has moved on substantitally since Wolves and WBa were last in it

that could be your guys problem, has McCarthy never told them to play to the whistle, even if it was offside the ref, the linesmen, the 4th official, the FA, Old Mick or the media havent picked up on it, you must have great vision and reactions, are you part of the Matrix or just a sorry wolves fan scratching for an excuse for a loss.

    Weston WBA

what?? why would dedicated pro’s leave when they have just won promotion? would you walk away from a job you have just earnt for an entire year? NO

  31. Ryan said:

    Weston Wolf

If Stoke, Hull, Bristol City and Watford are dross and you are further down the league table than them I think you should look at your own team you fool.

if we go up realistically we do need a few players but not wholesale changes look the Dingles would need, we have a great chance of staying up when you look at teams already there and the other 2 teams that will come up this season, we have a superb young manager and chairman who both know what they are doing unlike our neighbours down the road, whatever happened to that £30mil investment?

  32. scott4wba said:

Anyone else think the dingles would love to have jealous “you’ll be straight back down” comments about their club, indicating they have a cats chance in hell of making it there in the 1st place? If only you could exchange sad comments for league points the table wouldn’t reflect who the REAL losers are this season. Neither dingles or Baggies gonna be in playoffs this year…..for very different reasons, Lovin it!

I understand that your club’s only association with the Premier was extremely fleeting, but you really should know how these things work.
If a team is re-promoted, the parachute payments cease - hence your comments about Charlton are as clueless as your manager.

30 Super - you didn’t go to the game and I can tell you now the highlights on sky did not do it justice! Your not even “one of them” fans who listen on the radio and then phone in, just leave it mate, your making yourself look silly(er).

We have had a bad season by our standards, but you I think have had only had a marginally better one !

In a very poor Championship you have struggled to climb to the top and it’s by no by no certain that you will come away from Carrow Road with promotion in the bag ?

My point was that all the teams chasing promotion are likely to struggle next season and face an immediate return to the Championship without heavy investment. Wolves do have an owner with barrel loads of money in the Bank and the desire to get to the Premiership. You sadly will be soon called
    West Bromwich Albion yoyo FC

Too many head hurting posts to respond to individually - although LCW claiming wolves fans never “say their gonna do this and that” needs special mention - a more inaccurate and ridiculous statement would be hard to find - just try reading the posts on this very page you mug.

Anyway, automatic promotion is now something to be laughed at cos its much better to be eigth in the league and lose to your bitterest rivals - at home.
