Crews rescue dog from canal

Fire crews have rescued a dog from a canal in Wolverhampton.

The alsatian was stuck towards the edge of the waterway where there is no footpath near Smestow Street, Park Village.

Firefighters climbed across a lock and tied a rope around the animal which was then pulled to safety.

Crew commander Danny Hinds explained: “He was up to his neck in the water and was shivering and quite distressed. I have no idea how long he had been in the water but he was in quite a bad way.

“He would probably have died if we had not been able to get him out. We managed to get hold of his collar and put a line around him. He was quite aggressive but did not bite – I think he realised that we were there to help him.”

The alsatian had a tag with the contact number of a call centre on its collar but the phone line was not manned overnight. The animal had not suffered any injuries and was given a clean bill of health by a vet. The dog is being cared for while its owner is traced.

What would we do without our firefighters? Well done fellas, it’s nice to know you cared enough, and had skills enough to rescue that poor dog.

Very comendable. Let’s hope that as an alsation he hasn’t been saved to take a bite out of somebody.

Frank Jones, I didn’t realise that GERMAN SHEPHERDS (alsations to you) were the only breed to bite, I own a very loving and well behaved one myself (despite what his previous ‘humans’ had done to him) and let me tell you if trained correctly are a wonderful breed, which is far more than i can say about some Jack Russells.

Peoples generosity of spirit never fails to amaze me!!!

FRANK GO GET BITTEN, we do what we can do when others need us to do it even if they cant physically ask we will do, that includes dogs
