Blitz on tyre fly-tipping

Steve Shilvock, head of environmental health, by the rubbish dumped on a Cannock Chase car parkMore than 70 companies which handle tyres in Cannock Chase are to be visited by environmental officers after a spate of fly-tipping across the district.

In recent months Cannock Chase Council has seen a sudden rise in the amount of tyres being dumped at beauty spots around the area.

In one incident at Stile Cop car park on Cannock Chase more than a hundred tyres were dumped overnight on Friday last week along with a caravan which was set alight.

Firefighters were able to prevent the tyres catching fire but the council says the incident is one of many.

In a bid to halt the illegal practice the council has begun visiting every company in the district that handles tyres and will demand those companies prove they have disposed of tyres properly. Any company who fails to show they have the evidence could be served with legal notices and fixed penalty fines.

The guilty firm or firms should be forced out of the market. We all pay a disposal fee when we replace our tyres so the company is guilty of theft as well as fly tipping.
