Mick McCarthy refused to be down after another Molineux disappointment in the derby story of the last two years.
The Wolves boss was adamant his side deserved a share of the spoils and was eager to keep the mood among his players and the supporters buoyant as they continue their challenge for a top six finish.
Two absolute crunch games in the same stadium are now fast approaching Wolves with Ipswich, right in the thick of the same battle, and Cardiff, still harbouring hopes of a challenge, are the visitors. And McCarthy was adamant that his team’s overall form level should leave them confident of retrieving the damage of a third defeat in the last four Molineux visits from the old enemy.
He said: “They took their chance and that proved to be the difference. It was a terrific football match with both sides going for it and I thought we both played very well. They’ve had good chances, we’ve had good chances and I’m immensely proud of how we played the game.
“I thought the players were terrific - they gave every last drop and yes, I thought we could have got something out of it, but we’ve not managed to pick the right pass at times. I know they’ve had other chances, but it could have been 4-4 as well as 1-0.
“I’m delighted with the way we played but no-one is interested in that when we have lost to West Brom. I know it hurts but we’ve lost to West Brom and we can’t do anything about it. But we can do something about Saturday’s game and that’s my job now.
“We can go into Saturday’s game buoyant and up-beat knowing everybody has given their all for the team and that we should have a belief about Saturday because of the way we are playing and the way we’ve played over recent weeks. We’ve been playing well and we’ve played well again in a good game.”But McCarthy admitted the pill was that much tougher for fans to swallow because of the fierce local rivalry and he aplogised to supporters who, he acknowledged, now had to suffer some “stick” off their neighbours. He added: “It doesn’t hurt me as much as it hurts the fans. It can’t do, can it? It can’t hurt me like it does that lad over there with his Wolves scarf on.
“But when Barnsley lost to Cardiff in the FA Cup semi-final, did it bother the Wolves fans? Of course not, they could not give a toss about it.”But I was gutted because I’m a Barnsley lad and a Barnsley fan.
“That’s the way it is. I’m hurting tonight, the players are hurting and I’m sorry for the fans and sorry that they have got to listen to some of their neighbours giving them stick now.
“The issue is that we have lost to West Bromwich Albion.”If we win the next four then the result won’t bother me because we will be in the play-offs, and if we get into the play-offs then no-one will care.
“We can go into Saturday quite buoyant because of the way we played. I am bullish because we have played well over the last few weeks. A top-six finish is definitely on the cards and I am not being down.”

Did only one hear MM on radio WM last night. I am sorry Wolves fans but it was cringing. He really does talk some dross. Not being funny but how can he motivate a team talking like that. Its all well and good seeing the effort as a positive but surely he needs to realise that you need more quality. I know you might think this is a biased opinion but if you were to make it through the play offs I cant help thinking you would do a Derby. Whereas with our style of football (plus several additions) I really feel that (if promoted) we could compete with anyone outside the top four. I will get slated for that but thats my opinion.

we lost to the better team. And again it sums us up being wolves. we are no further down the line in the last 20 years i have followed them. nearly there. not quite good enough. time and time again. we might give stick to al*ion for going to wembley and messing it up, but maybe we take a leaf from their book- up/dwn from prem in last 5years, FAcup semi, wembley twice… pains me to say it, dont get me wrong. morgan needs to invest this summer whatever happens. we bang on about loyal plyers etc, but gone are the days of a ”bully” that will stay through thick and thin regardless of offers. the geras etc- GET THE TEAM PROMOTED.
but boing to them for now. WE WILL HAVE OUR DAY….just dont know when, (we have been damn patient enough)

Yeh Mick it was really close.
We bossed the game , hit the woodwork twice , scored one , had loads of chances ( double what you had according to the stats today ) and you lot had 2 shots from outside the area.

P.S Was Mr Sylvain Elikes Cakes playing ? Only I thought he was going to hammer our dodgy defence ? If I were you I would file a missing persons report.

I agree we could have won but we were never going to with our midfield. The problem with playing wingers is that if you are doing so, you need bust centre midfielders otherwise huge gaps begin to appear. And this was the case last night. Greeneing exploited evry inch of that space.

He’s right he has to pick em up for saturday now. Come on wolves fans I know it’s like being stuck with a knife this morning but we have to put it behind us and push on. A win against ipswich coupled with palace not winning at watfor would put us either a point behind them or if they lose level with a game in hand. Yes we would need major investment should we go up but if we got there would anyone care? Yes albion are better equipped to deal with the prem but worry about our inadequesies after. Question bar albion is there anyone in that mix you wouldnt fancy us against? I would not be bothered about any of the others so come on heads up.

WBA probably over 90 minutes did offer slightly more that Wolves, but that is to be expected with the money that has been spent on our team. Local derby’s are never nice to lose, but MM seemed to take the defeat in his usual manner, by whingehing saying “they took our chance and we didnt..not really a true reflection. Sometimes you just have to admit you were beaten by a better team and credit the opposition. Anyway good luck with the Play offs Wolves, but I believe MM aint the man goin forward for you guys.

Defence - Collins and Elokobi were pathetic. Not all their fault, they simply were up against better players. They are not good enough for this level.
Midfield - George was awful, Gibson worse. Well done Michael Gray, the best player Wolves had.
Strikers - Non existent.
Overall, its ok Mick saying they took their chance but come on, they should have taken 3,4 or maybe even 5 more great chances. How many clear cut chances did we have Mick?? How many saves did their keeper actually have to make??
You say you were proud of the performance, if this is as good as it gets then please leave so we can get Ince or Big Sam in.
On another note, thanks to the Police for the shambles for people leaving the Steve Bull upper……..

Thing is mick you don’t get points for playing well, you get points for winning. And we plainly haven’t been playing well enough, the goal difference is another lost point at this stage.
Albion deserve to go up and i hope they do…coz if we get into the play offs I don’t wanna have them wipe the floor with us again, two years running.
Cardiff is a must win that’s all there is to it…too little too late.
Its not good enough…given the size of this club, changes are required at senior level to put it right.

I missed Muppets interview last night, can somebody give me a rough idea of what drivel he came out with?
In my opinion the midfield was the difference last night and Gibson shouldn’t have been on the pitch.
As for making the play offs, as much as I’d love it I know Cardiff will beat us as they are managed by our most successful manager of recent times (who I personally think we should have kept on)and Ipswich will be a draw. We also need to score a shed load of goals if it comes down to goal difference and we haven’t got that capability unless there is a constant supply of quality balls from midfield.
One last thing, down the years I’ve got used to the banter taking the mick and receiving as well but why is there so much venom from so many morons on both sides on this website. I admit I would sacrifice my gran to see us maul the steptoes 10-0 as the derby means that much to me but I’ve never understood how the hatred seems to grow year after year

What on earth do some of you lot expect?!! I don’t watch you every week but given where your club was 2 years ago, some of the abuse McCarthy has been getting this season (so soon after so many of you were seemingly behind him) is astonishing.
Honest opinion, I look at your team sheet, and there is nothing to fear on there. Kightly when fit and Hennessey aside, I don’t see a side that’s immeasurably better than the likes of Sheffield Wednesday. Some of you rightly point out that it’s not immeasurably worse than Stoke, but Stoke are a physical side with experienced players. The average age of your team is 21.
Perhaps I’m wrong and I don’t wish to sound patronising, but my honest opinion is that getting to the play-offs last year was the worst thing you could’ve done, expectation has been too high on a young team and a small squad.
You gave us a decent game last night, but we rightly won, not because I’m being biased, but because, as some of the more sensible posts from your fans have pointed out, we’ve built this side over the best part of about 8 years with the help of Premiership and parachute money (spent well) that you lot just haven’t had.
I’ve seen fickle before but you lot defy belief.

I’m sorry Mick, but 2 wins in 17 derby games has got me reaching for the prozak. Yes, the best team won, but it pains me that throughout the 90s we had a supposed ‘best team’ only to surrender to Albion teams packed with unforgetables like Jason van Blerk, Micky Evans, Darryl Burgess and co.
They didn’t seem to display the same inferiroity complex we did last night. Whilst I’m not looking for a Matt Carbon crippler, I’d have loved just one ‘reducer’ to set the tone. All I saw was handshakes and noble gestures like kicking the ball out to all ‘Super Kev’ a bit of treatment. The tone was all wrong, and I’m amazed Mick openly glorifies in his ability to remove the needle from these games, as quoted on TV recently. It wasn’t a Black Country derby that Sean Flynn would associate with. And therein lies the tale…Stoke know how to do it (3-1 at Brittania). Mick has had 7 attempts and its still the same love-in with our nemises. And it hurts!

Stu & raffo what planet are you on??? - ‘destroy our club’??? ‘play Eastwood from the start’?? - oh for crying out loud, grow up!
Wolves have made progress this year thanks to Mick - last nights performance (were you two actually there?) was full of energy, endeavor and guts. This from a side made up of non-leaguers and other people’s cast offs. Last night they were up against an equally well motivated side – WHO WERE IN THE PREMIER LEAGUE a short time ago – and our boy’s were very close to them. Take no notice of Tony Butler on Radio WM – he hasn’t got a clue either – albion were not in ‘a different class’ – just a bit better in a few positions and a bit luckier – all the loose balls in the box fell to albion players, on another day we could have had a goal or two.
And as for Freddy Eastwood, last night we had ‘Freddy the full back’, ‘Freddy the left sided midfielder’ etc etc. The bloke is constantly out of position, and is a liability. No wonder Mick won’t give him a start. Kevin Kyle always looks a better bet when he comes on.
The players are 100% behind Mick – you would have to be a complete Muppet not to realise that. So get off his back, stop moaning, and in time he will get us up – and keep us there.

I’m sorry I have to respond to E&SWolf. I am a Wolves supporter through and through but our season is over, it was over when we only drew at Bristol. I don’t think this team has the consistency or ability to win 3 out of the last 4 games and that is what it will take for us to get into the playoffs. It’s also okay to slate the manager because he doesn’t read these comments or the press reports, his words not mine, perhaps he would be a better manager if he did. I hope that MM is released to graze at the funny farm where he obviously belongs. What Wolves need is a leader on the pitch, a Paul Ince, an Emlyn Hughes or a Mike Bailey the present team don’t have one and when the going gets tough they crumble.

We nearly matched the Albion. Is that good enough for this club? Fact is we remain a team trying to claw on to a play off place and we remain the 2nd best team in the black country. How much progress have we really made in the last 12 months? How much time will McCarthy be allowed to take the club forward? I suspect in a years time we will either be in the same position, or things will go well enough over the next month for us to win the play offs and then we will be trying to avoid breaking Derby’s record for lowest points in the Premier League.
Last night was not just painful because of who we lost to, it was painful cause we showed that we deserve to be where we are, 8th in the league.

When I saw the Wolves team I knew the Albion would win because we did not have a mid-field. Gibson is a disgrace and should be sent back to United and Oli has got no bottle. Whilst Grey runs around the pitch, he does not contribute anything positive to the game. Keogh thinks he’s a king-pin but fails to feed off EB because he’s not a goal scorer.
MM bite the bullet and play Eastwood from the start so that we have a predator that will score goals. It is no good bringing a man on with 15 minutes to go whenn we are a lost cause.
MM, you and your training staff are responsible for the poor showing of the Wolves this Season and despite the fact that you think we are playing well, you must watch different games to what I watch every week - but there again, I havce to pay for the privilege.

When I saw the Wolves team announced last night I knew that we would not beat the Albion because on paper our mid field was non-existant and this proved to be the case once we started playing.
Gibson is one of the worst mid field players we have and you loan out Gleason and others. Oli is lazy and does not put his foot in where it hurts. Grey, whilst full of endeavour does not construct any positive moves for the forwards. Keogh, playing alonmgside EB is a joke as he is nor a goal scorer so EB has to forrage alone.
MM, you must play Eastwood alongside EB from the start and then we will score goals because he is a predator and a goal scorer, but you are stubborn and will not play him because you would be proven wrong.
Congratulations Albion you are the best team in the League and we did not have an answer to the commitment and skill of your team.
MM you are responsible for the poor showing of the Wolves this Season. Despite you trying to be upbeat about our poor performance, which is undestandable, you have continually picked players who are not good enough and left better players out of the team.

I see on this thread there are more reasonable Wolves fans than on others. I know it is a big deal to admit that we were the better side…and to be honest you do yourselves proud for saying that. I actually thought that mick mcarthy was a great appointment.I think he is a very good manager and did well last season.Thing is his comments today are concerning and I can see why Wolves fans are a little worried. Problem is, do you get rid of Mccarthy and then will things get better, or worse?Look at what happened to Bolton. I will be honest I dont pay much attention to the Wolves anymore so I cant say if you guys are moaning or being objective but from the comments of the fans on here who appear to be reasonable, football loving individuals, I think that you guys are justified in being concerned.
In all honesty I would love the wolves to get promoted.I think it is tough enough in the prem these days and in the league as a whole for the teams to survive I would rather the wolves do well than Sheff utd!Not too well mind…we dont want to lose to you lot!
Good luck for the playoffs.I think you just have to back the manager in the run in and if he doesnt deliver then bye bye mick. Being negative will not help you now. You are not out of the mix yet.

58 I think you need to change your name judging by your posts it does not suit you, guy maybe but wise??

Oh and just for the benefit of a couple of posters on here.We bought almost a whole new team this summer.I did not think that we would be top this season…just in the playoffs.I think it illustrates what a great manager we have.
We are not missing the players that “deserted a sinking ship” last season. All of which have gone on to struggle in the prem. The wolves have the players to do it.

Warren (30) - Spot on mate. The problem is that we have an element of idiots who are up there amongst the worst fans in the country. I was as gutted as anyone last night - however like you say we are a young team and are building for the future. We have scouted some quality talent from the lower leagues, have a great youth set-up and could add even more quality when we expand the scouting to a European network. A bit more time to gel and develop together and good things will happen. Personally, think Mick should be honest, however when you get a bunch of thick idiots barracking your teams every mistake, he probably thinks that he could do with instilling some confidence.

Some of these post match comments scare me.
Yes we lost and whatever excuses anybody makes, it was to a better team. But if ever we need to show support for our team it’s now. If you can’t give everybody at the club, players, manager and owner, 100%, then please stay away on Saturday.
McCarthy has succeeded in taking the team backwards this season despite spending millions in the transfer market. Lack of quality signings, along with the unbelievable treatment of Freddy Eastwood show the manager has no future with the club.
Mick they took one of their chances and hit the woodwork three times. They were by far the better side, we never really threatened.
The Manager has to remain positive while there is still a chance of making the play offs, but it’s looking unlikely now that we will make it.
We really have to go for it so hopefully Kites might make some kind of impact and you will play Freddie who even if he didn’t score, used the ball intelligently.
Jarvis, SEB, Freddy and Kites up front as one last gamble.
Have some guts and actually give us a chance of winning the last four games rather than finishing the season as also rans.

#88, totally agree, that’s the ticket to the Premiership, wanna tell Moxey and Morgan that? Yes you have a great manager, wanna swap him for ours and we can toss in SEB?

Where are all those who chanted “super super Mick……”
We played well last season, but after watching this lot again a few teams, it’s all hype. Eastwod:turkey, Ebanks-Blake: turkey, Keogh:turkey - we may have loyal support but you just look at how many managers that we have had who were good enough to lead clubs through to the quarter finals of the world cup (2) led countries (3). Don’t just blame Mick, the whole club is a shambles, which in recent years has promised of glories to come.
We were very luck to get to where we did last year, lucky again this year and watch out, we might just be where Leicester are next year.
Well done Baggies, now where is my carrier bag

When he was at Both Ireland and Sunderland McCarthy used to come out with rubbish like this article.
In the end this serial failure was kicked out of both jobs. Took years to put the damage right. It always ends in tears for him. It will end with tears here as well!

Personally I think we gave your sttrike force too much respect, failed to play our game and allowed SEB to be isolated.
Could have and should have done better with the chances near the end.

The favourites for the final playoff place are now Crystal Palace.
I believe they will win 2 of their last 3 games to achieve a total of 71 points.
Therefore(because of our inferior goal difference)we need 72 points which equates to 3 wins & a draw from our last 4 games.
A big ask. Remember “When the going gets tough, the tough get going”.
Keep the Faith.

Well said 90 - absolutely spot on. It’s scarey indeed. Speaking of which…
92 - if you had half a brain you’d be dangerous. I’d rather listen to MM than your mindless ramblings any day. Keogh is a good player - not an out and out centre forward but a good creative foil. So get off his back and go and look up he word ’support’ in a dictionary. It’s under ‘S’ by the way.

Just like to put my bit in for Freddy,,MM gave him about 15 minits last night and he never put a foot wrong,he is class,,iff he is let go in the summer there will be no shortage of takers.Stop dreaming lads we have no chance of premiership football,,look at Sunderland, Keene has spent 30 million and hes asking for 50 million can anyone honestly see us getting a fraction of that kind of money,,we would be lucky to get five million..No lets get behind the lads and keep buying the tickets,West Brom,Ipswich, and Cardiff will cost me 180 quid, and thers twenty odd thousand like me.Iff the Albion can run their ship with smaller crowds, what are we doing wrong, and dont tell me its premiership money, remember we were in the premiership but we never had no money, any money we had we had to sell players,,,final thought,,honestly who is going to score goals against Ipswich and Cardiff, our lot havnt a clue infront of goal…

if we can keep matt murray, kites, elokobi, dave edwards, seb, keogh, eastwood, jarvis, olofinajana, mickey grey, craddock (who was superb the other night) bothroyd (who needs a firework up his arse). If we sell hennessey 6million, get 2 quick centre halfs, a ball winning midfielder and play karl henry at right back (we missed him the other night). and out gibson(send him back hes done nothing impressive or even above average since hes been here) foley(good first 3 games but is not good enough) collins (like his attitude but defintely not good enough) s ward (same applies) r edwards (sick of his injuries and is average anyway) apparently we have a done deal for collins from westham and joe ledley regardless of division for next season.

Agree with your line of thought but…
Will Craddock play enough games to be useful?
Eastwood, Keogh and Bothroyd need to move on, they just don’t cut it, if they did we would have seen it by now!
Haven’t seen enough of Edwards yet and I think you will see an improvement in Foley when Kightly finally returns. I agree about Henry though, his best position is right back but McCarthy will never play him there!
Olofinjana should be sold too for the right price, he’s good but drifts in and out too much.
The dead wood for me is:
Collins
Breen
Edwards R.
Ward x 2
Potter
Gibson
Eastwood
Bothroyd
Keogh
Craddock
Oh and McCarthy!

I have to say that the majority of Wolves fans have been gracious in defeat, which is hard to do when you are hurting.
From a Wolves point of view I don’t think MM is your man. I remember when WBA beat Sunderland in 2004 to go up, we had one chance in the entire match and scored. We tactically out thought him that day, we did the same to him on Tuesday.
Though he is a genuine bloke he is tactically naive (have I spelt that right?!). He didn’t exploit our weakness on set pieces like stoke did when they beat us 3-1.
The black country derby should be played in the premiership. It’s not over for wolves yet, get behind your manager as now is not the time to be calling for MM’s head. Win your matches now, get in the play offs and let’s have the black country derby in premiership!!

Is the idiot still not looking at the table ?
4 wins and we are in the play offs he says, are Palace not already 3 points ahead with 3 to play and a 9 goal advantage in the goal difference column ?
Seems that figures are not his strongest suit, leaving the subs until the final minutes instead of 30 from the end on Tuesday night, another fine mess he got us into.

The Wolves have been so second rate from the start of the season, that it was obvious that we were not going to make it up this season. However, for the Derby game we had to get some adrenelin going, so we blagged it up a bit.
SEB is better than he looked last Tuesday, but the Throstles (how respectful can you get to the Tescos?) have been the better team all season, and I just hope that you get up there automatically, it would be well deserved.
But were going up next season to help get you demoted!

McCarthy talks a load of male cow excrement! He just makes it up as he goes along and there’s enough dimwits around to agree with his Irish blarney.
His track record is extinguished! Failure everywhere he goes, and years to put the damage right.
This is the moron who organized an Irish training session, but forget to organize any footballs for them to train with! One of the reasons why Roy Keane walked away in disgust. It has taken him over a year to put right the damage McCarthy did to Sunderland. The same applies to Ireland!
Time we did a sanity check and do the same thing. I’ve had enough bulls*it!
