Ipswich is must-win game - Wayne

wd1636663heads-30-gd-31.jpgWayne Hennessey has turned up the heat on Saturday’s crunch clash against Ipswich after claiming it’s a ‘must-win’ if Wolves are to make the play-offs.

Last night’s sobering 1-0 defeat to arch rivals Albion left Mick McCarthy’s side three points off the top six with a game in hand against Cardiff next Tuesday.

“We’ve got to push on now and definitely get three points against Ipswich - that’s a massive game for us and we’ve just got to take the points,” said the keeper.

“It’s definitely a must-win game. It’s there for us and we’ve got to grab it.

“It’s still in our hands, but we’ve got to beat Ipswich. We’re going to be a bit devastated now after this but we will keep our heads high and hopefully get three points.

“You’d have to ask me after the Ipswich game whether I think we can make the play-offs.”Wolves have taken one point from six but Hennessey insists there is enough quality and spirit in the squad to get promoted.

“There are some great players here - we’ve definitely got the talent to go up to the Premier League,” he said.

“We’ll have to see if things start rolling for us.

“The lads have definitely got the spirit - we’ve got some great lads in the dressing room who remind us these are the games we have to be winning and these are the points we need to be gaining. We’ll be motivated. It’s about taking it easy and laying off the training for a couple of days so we can push on on Saturday.”

Striker Andy Keogh believes Wolves may have to win all four of their remaining games to clinch a play-off place.

“The next four games are massive, starting with Saturday,” said the striker. “We just have to get as many points as we can, four wins if possible. That’s all we can hope for.

“We just need to get this disappointment over with and focus on Ipswich because that’s an important game and they’re a team around us.

“It’s up to us to do the business.

“People might think ’same old, same old’ because we’re still talking about it being there for us, but it is.

“Anything can happen for the play-offs, it’s still wide open.”

Wolves fans lets put things into context, albion are still recieving parachute money they were in the premier league longer than us so they have had more resoureces over the past 5 seasons, due to this there squad is bigger and has better quality, beacause of that we are playing catch up! As much as I hate saying it they are a better side than us at present. Well done to them last night. Lets face it they should have had this league rapped up weeks ago.

Lets pick ourselves up and get ready for Ipswich on sat if we are to make the play offs we need to get behind the team, it still in our own hands.

Come on lads you can do it.

I just want to endorse what Unclefathand stated about Mick McCarthy. Yes, he did indeed make those comments on Radio WM, as anyone who tuned in on their way to work ths morning will have heard for themselves.

I accept that Mick’s playing things down for whatever reasons, but quite honestly, I don’t want to hear such insipid, passionless talk.

Mick, permit me the great privilege of educating your good self as to precisely what ‘The Black Country Derby’ means to the proud citizens of the great City of Wolverhampton:

JUST THE MENTION OF ALBI*N RAISES THE HACKLES. GOT IT???

BEATING THEM IS ALMOST MORE IMPORTANT THAN LIFE OR DEATH, BUT, IF IT AINT, BOY, IT COMES PRETTY CLOSE! GOT IT??

THERE MAY ONLY EVER BE 3PTS OR A CUP TIE IN THE NEXT ROUND OF A COMPETITION AT STAKE, BUT 99% OF WOLVES FANS CAN’T SEE PAST BEATING THEIR DESPISED NEIGHBOURS. GOT IT???

Yeah, “only” football it may be…but this fixture dates back to the beginning of time. It’s historic; it’s meaningful; it’s passionate. It’s more than “just a game”….this is tribal warfare at a very deep level, Mick.

If you can’t grasp the depth of feeling here; if you can’t understand the very individual nature of Black Country communities, bog off back to Barnsley! I want a boss who’s seriously offended at being beaten on their own patch by those Tesco muppets, irrespective of whether they’re a clearly superior side or not.

Oh, and if YOU think Wolves were WBA’s equals, well, you’re an even bigger muppet than I previously thought.

Wake your ideas up, you clueless plank

Sorry Henners, it’s not in our hands.
if we win our game in hand and win all the games to go, and Palace win thiers, we’ll lose out on goal diff! we need to win all games and hope they fail to win all remaining games. sad but true. That said, it’s still possible so lets not give up!

Although we beat Ipswich 4-1 at home the scoreline vastly flattered us. Ipswich are a good footballing side but seem a little Jekyll and Hyde away from home. Getting the derby defeat out of their systems will be a key factor as to whether you can surge into the playoffs, if you can, then you will be inform and could go on to win it at Wembley. I would start by dropping Collins, did he just have a bad game Tuesday or has he been that poor all season????
Surely Breen or Ward are better???
    Anyway all the best.
Hopefully see you in the prem.

Funkster, be aware that Palace have to go to Watford and Hull before probably winning 3 points at home to Burnley on the last day. They are unlikely to win both those games so we can do it but of course we do have to win our games.

It certainy is. Get Olofinjana and Gibson out, bring Edwards and Henry (when fit) in. Thought George was coming back to his best but based on last night, he obviously cannot be counted on in the crucial games. SEB was talking us up for weeks and what did he do last night? Keogh played defence, midfield and upfront. Ran his socks off and won everything in the air. Him and Gray looked decent but Elokobi?? Thought he would only get better but…

Please ,Mr.Morgan, buy us a team that can beat the Albion.Please.

Yes, Collins really is that bad. He usually makes 1 or 2 absolute howlers in every game, leading to clear goalscoring opportunities for the opposition. McCarthy’s got to drop this liability.

WBA are the best side in the division, let’s be honest. We’re average. The league table says it all. I wouldn’t say Stoke, Bristol City or Watford are any better though. I’m afraid to say Palace have hit form and I fancy them to edge us to the playoffs, and to win them.

  12. Romsley Baggie said:

Chill out Justin you’ll give yourself a heart attack mate!!!!!! There’s still 4 games left. If you will all your games 8-0 between now and the end of the season you might make the playoff’s, don’t be so down hearted!!!

C’mon Wolves pick yourselves up and have a real good go at getting into the playoffs, after last nights game which was a nail biting thriller, would love it for WBA and Wolves in the Premiership along with B’Ham and Villa and hopefully another Midland team.

  14. wolfhound said:

I am afraid that 4 is right the playoffs are out of our hands now we must rely on other teams falling down.I was at the match last night and again suprised at MMs team selection of Gibson I think he lacked the passion and committment required for local derby games ,he was not the only one shirking tackles Oli was a culprit as well which ment our midfield was toothless.I think Eastwood made a difference when he came on but Collins again had a poor game. The day of judgement is now looming for McCarthy the playoffs were always a minimum requirement for this season.

  15. NRB said:

Must win game, thats another defeat then. How many must win games have we actually won!
I judge McCarthy on the season and basically this division was there for the taking. We have ended up miles short in a poor league. McCarthy do the right thing in 4 games time and leave.

Sorry mate, but heard it all before… “4 points minmum from City and Albion games” ring a bell ?

If you lot spent more time on the training ground and less time spouting horse manure to the media we’d probably be in a much stronger postion.

You can bet Collins and co will line up unchanged on sat, unless, dare we hope to believe, breeny is back.

heaven help us with this numpty in charge.

    PS
It isnt in our hands any more - if someone at the club ever looked at the table you would have known that.

bring on 08/09 and with a bit of luck we’ll still have WH Kights and Freddy

It’s beyond me how we’ve managed to get to this position, but it is still possible based on these fixtures.
    PALACE - Watford a, Hull a, Burnley h
    IPSWICH - Wolves a, Preston a, Hull h
    WOLVES - Ipswich h, Cardiff h, Coventry a, Plymouth h
    CHARLTON - QPR a, Barnsley a, Coventry h
    PLYMOUTH - Preston h, Blackpool h, Wolves a
    CARDIFF - Scunthorpe a, Wolves a, Burnley a, Barnsley h

PALACE 65 Points and maximum 9 to play for = 74
IPSWICH 64 Points and maximum 9 to play for - 73
WOLVES 62 Points and 12 to play for = 74
CHARLTON 61 Points and 9 to play for = 70
PLYMOUTH 60 Points and 9 to play for = 69
CARDIFF 60 Points and 12 to play for = 72

Palace can surely not win at Watford and Hull. If they do they deserve final play-off place
Ipswich simply have to win at Wolves and we cannot afford to lose that match
Wolves must win possibly every match to get to play-offs
Charlton have tricky match at QPR Saturday which could finally finish them off
Plymouth - 2 easy home matches and then crunch last match at Molineux
Cardiff - 3 away matches incl Wolves and potentially easy last match at home

Phew……..We can just do it, but no slip ups allowed !!

    2. In responce to your post about parachute money and resources available to each club. Yes we have had the parachute money to spend wisely, but we never have had a sugar daddy like Sir Jack, we have just got a better set up all round from youth setup to scouting . Also a chairman that runs the club as a business and not a hobby. Just accept the wolves glory days are over and start rebuilding.

Another ‘must wine game’ eh? We needed four points from the last two games, we got one. How many did we get over the Christmas period?

Let’s not forget about Crystal Palace, if they win their last fixtures they will claim the sixth spot, it is out of our hands now.

Apologies for the negativity, I just want this dire season to finish. I want Morgan to step forward and explain what his plans are for this great club, if not, bugger off back up the M6. I want ‘Mick the Clueless’ out. I want this club to stop treating its fan base as cash-cows and show some ambition.

Is that too much to ask?

Keep the faith, up the wolves.

9 Eddie Wolf - Seyi was made to look bad last night because he was playing in central midfield on his own, did gibson touch the ball apart from that 1 shot in the 2nd half? He was doing the work of 2 people, with henry there he is able to play much more as Henry does the “donkey” work which is so vital, he was sorely missed last night!
    Elikobi should be dropped
    Collins should be dropped
    Gibson should be dropped
Eastwood should be ommited from the squad and then sold!

The albion manager organised his team to deal with the problem of the long ball to Blake and the threat from Jarvis at half time. M.M. left it untill 15 minutes to go to work out albion were now controlling our threat. Keoghs form was getting back to his best but our defence wants to stop playing themselves into trouble due to poor passing.

Well said 2. West Brom are a very good side with alot more experience than us. I think last night we played the best side in this league, last night’s performance makes you wonder how they haven’t run away with the title. We now have to play four teams of a lesser quality than last night’s opponents. We only lost one-nil, we created chances, we can beat all of our next four opponents. Let’s go for one more big push. Let’s hope the players feel like they owe the club and the fans. Last night’s game could be a blessing in disguise.

I see we are back to the usual inane comments from players stating the obvious and delivering little.

You lot coming on here mouthing off the team and players are out of order, yeah we lost to sandwell, but face facts, they are the better team at the moment. I know its a hard thing to accept, but it is the truth. Crying on here about how bad we are only shows their fans how easy we are to wind up.

And I know its dissapointing to see that we haven’t progressed as far as we’d like to of from last season, but it has been a difficult one for one reason or another

All we should be concentrating on now is one last push for the play offs

They are all must win games! The reason that you fail year in year out despite some of the biggest crowds and best facilities in the division is that you are quick to get on your players and managers backs. We’ve backed Megson and Mowbray and got success. We were very quickly on the back of Bryan Robson and we struggled (by our standards). Learn from it - get behind your lads or stay at home.

For the rest of this season our options are ltd. I,E. signing any new blood.
The last 12 to 15 games have brought a decent pts haul.
However, Foley should be dropped as should collins.Gibsons days in the gold and black are at an end. Its Potter / henry holding, or Oli holding and Edwards ATTACKING. Keogh ang Gray were awesome last night, final ball excluded.
McCarthy must stay, i believe he can take us forward, in what is and will be next year an average league.
We have a young team, that with weeding out, and nurturing, and building can achieve Automatic promotion next year.I’m still praying 10 pts could get us a top 6 finish.Hold your nerve lads, no one around us is any better.Keep the faith.
