Hennessey: We lost to league best

West Bromwich Albion’s Ishmael Miller sees his shot saved by Wolves goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey during the Coca-Cola Championship match at Molineux, Wolverhampton.Wayne Hennessey reckoned Wolves were “tremendous” - but admits Albion are “probably the best team in the Championship”.

Wolves were beaten by Zoltan Gera’s 59th-minute tap-in, but the margin could have been greater as the Baggies played the better football and created the greater number of chances, hitting post and bar and forcing Hennessey into a smart tip-over.

“It was disappointing because the lads played tremendously well - it hit us really hard because it was probably the best I’ve seen us play for a while,” said the Welsh keeper.”The lads were quality in front of me and it was one of my quietest games, to be honest.

“You would have thought I’d have been worked a lot harder in a game like that, but the lads were tremendous.

“We just can’t put it in the net at the moment - things aren’t rolling for us in front of goal.”But the 21-year-old maintained Albion deserve to be top of the pile after their victory - and believes some of their players should be in the Premier League.

“Albion are a fantastic team and they played very well,” he said. “They defended really well and Dean Kiely didn’t have much to do.

“Of the teams we’ve faced, they are definitely up there - probably the best we’ve played. Some of their football was fantastic, and the way they kept the ball, some of their passing was tremendous.

“You have to question whether players such as Jonathan Greening and Zoltan Gera should be here or in the Premier League.

“They’re on form all the time at the moment and I’ve never seen them put in a poor performance.

“They’re tremendous players who work really hard and Albion are lucky to have them.”

While full of praise for Albion’s quality, Hennessey was disappointed with the goal conceded and believes it will prompt plenty of soul-searching on the training ground.

“Their goal came from a long ball over the top and Kevin Phillips just teed Gera up across the goal which punished us,” he said.

“We’ll have a look at the marking again on the video and see what we could change.”

Striker Andy Keogh said he felt sick at losing to the club’s biggest rivals.

“It was solid from them, but disappointing from us, and you just feel that little bit more sick because it was a local derby,” he said.

Keogh also believed Wolves could have defended better for the strike.

“We weren’t happy with their goal,” he said. “It was a good cross and a good finish, but it came from a straight ball over the top.”

Sadly i have to agree with Wayne being a season ticket holder and having been to a few away games this season too, seeing us play against most of the teams this year Albion are the best team i have seen us play against, putting it simply and as hard as it is for me to say or write Albion were the better team on the night and have a little bit more quality than us in certain areas of the pitch

i think you will go up as champions and if we can win our remaining games maybe we can go up via the play offs an all premiership black country derby would be nice

    Dear Mr Hennessey,

When you take goal kicks try kicking the ball straight down the centre of the pitch. That way you won’t have to keep throwing your arms up in the air and tutting every time the ball sails straight out of play on the touchline. Its not rocket science.

ok we lost to “the best team in the championship” but face facts that it’s like that being a wolves fan, none of us realistically believe that we’re good enough to go up. On the other hand any boggie fan that thinks that their team is built to STAY up needs a reality check - if your full backs shake so much when Jarvo runs at them what the hell will they do when Ronaldo turns up. Best of luck to you boggies just hope your chairman is ready to dip into those long pockets with his short arms because championship quality players(greening, morrison etc)have already proved they can’t cut the mustard with the big boys!

Come on mate, theres no need for that. He is right, we were outclassed and if you went to the match, I thought you would have witnessed that. Wayne is a quality ‘keeper and kept the score low last night, so I dont think its right to spout off at him. But I understand your anger cos I’m really down today

If you read some of last nights postings you will see that many wolves fans actually paid your team compliments. Do you baggies fans only look for the C***P that’s written and forget to read those postings that actually say something useful or complimentary ? Why does a Wolves fan paying you a compliment frighten you so much? I asked the same question last night and never got an answer from anybody!!

And as for you No. 3 well I’m just lost for words!! We lost to a better team on the night and there’s no point crying over spilt milk. We just need to re-group, the board needs to spend some big money on strengthening the side and we need to hope that we either make the play offs or come back stronger next season.

You were not that much better than us last night. That was more or less your strongest team. It certainly was not ours ie Murray, Kightly, Edwards were missing and we had Collins in defence.
Anyway with the fixture list, I am saying Stoke top, Albion 2nd, Wolves v Hull in the play offs and it might be Coventry to go down!

    10) It was sold out as far as Wolves are concerned unlike the Hawthorns. Are you working on the basis that our capacity is 28,500? That will not happen as the club allow for at least a row to be free in the away part.
Anyway I was in the North Bank and there were most definitely spare seats in your end!

Whats so good about loosing to the best team in the Championship stupid comment from a good goalkeeper

  33. 53 years, man & boy said:

We should be the best team in the Championship. At the start of the season, when flogging season tickets Moxey and McCarthy promised us that we would get automatic promotion this season.

They failed and the time is approaching for them to pay the consequences of this abject failure. The most dire season of football in 53 years of watching Wolves, only made bearable by a few recent performances, that have been blown up out of all proportion!

We have a mid-league team, who are occupying a mid-league position.

I think that the answer lies in Paul Ince, and I just hope that Morgan has made the necessary arrangements, as I have no intention of watching the same dross again next season.
