Gardner fitness joy for O’Neill

gardgoal1.jpgCraig Gardner is set to boost Villa’s options by declaring himself fit for the Second City derby this Sunday.

The utility man has missed the last two games with a thigh problem suffered on England under-21s duty on March 25 against Poland at Molineux.

But he is fast regaining fitness and boss Martin O’Neill expects the 21-year-old to be available for Sunday’s high noon showdown.

“Craig trained on Monday which was pleasing and he’s champing at the bit, which is pleasing,” said O’Neill.

“He got the go-ahead to play in our golf day yesterday which was great for him because he’s a brilliant golfer - the best.

“He won’t do himself any harm by rushing back.

“Let’s see how he gets on this week but he will want to declare himself fit.”Yardley-born Gardner is a boyhood Villa fan and is relishing the prospect of facing Birmingham along with fellow Brummies and Villa supporters in the claret and blue camp, Zat Knight and Gabriel Agbonlahor.

But O’Neill insists Gardner won’t try to rush back too early just to face Blues and instead claimed the youngster’s positive approach is accelerating his recovery. “I’ll be guided by the doctor and Roddy McDonald is very pleased with him,” said O’Neill.

“Craig’s willingness to get out there helps greatly in his rehab. If you’re sitting around moping and moaning, you won’t be back as quickly as someone who’s champing at the bit.”

John Carew is also set to be fit despite almost pulling out of the 6-0 win at Derby with a leg injury.
