The Government proposes to reduce the drink drive limit by almost half, so that just one pint of beer would put a driver over the limit.
Supported by road safety fanatics who spout the same meaningless statistics as the anti-smoking lobby, this is yet another attack on the law-abiding majority.
People who, for years, have taken pains to stick to the law, instead of being rewarded will be punished by these proposals.
There is not an epidemic of road accidents being caused by drivers who have consumed two pints of mild.
The problem, as everyone knows, is that class of drivers who totally disregard the law and continue to drive when blind drunk.
It is these people who should be targeted, even though we do have some of the safest roads in Europe.
Apart from being another nail in the coffin of the pub trade it is a further restriction on the freedom of the individual. Every day it seems there is a new ban on this or a crackdown on that.
Cigarettes in shop windows – ban them. Chip shops near to schools – ban them. Crisps and chocolate in hospitals – ban them. And that is just in recent weeks.
So it goes on, the zealots will never be appeased. They will continue to ratchet up their demands until we all conform to their peculiar ideas.
Yet there is no serious politician who is offering anything else, they all sing from the same politically correct hymnsheet.
Whatever your appetite or your hobby you can bet that some group of do-gooders or state-financed busybodies will have you in their sights.
With their justification being “if it saves one life” they will try to bully you into living forever. Or perhaps it will just seem that long.

Hear Hear!
It’s one of those, the list of things we can do is shorter than the one we can’t. Our children want to become adults to have the freedom to make decisions for themselves. How surprised they will be!

Karen , haven’t you realised that all the other countries are putting their do gooders on an island ? its called Gt. Britain .
We are the world leaders in reducing carbon footprints ? lol no we aren’t its just that no one else has bothered to do anything .. they just say ” get rid of our big fancy cars ? no get stuffed ” pay more tax on causing industrial fumes to make things cost more … no thanks .
WE are the island of do gooders , and those of us slowly starting to realise it emigrate to Canada or Australia and become their ” immigrants who take our jobs and homes ” lol
Come the revolution lets shoot em all and live how we wanna live .

Ever noticed these do-gooders are always looking to stop other people.
Its never ‘please ban this as I do it and its bad for my health’.
Its always ‘ban this as I don’t want you to have a choice about your health, you’ll have things my way only’.

I agree with all of the above, and I am sure that this country has gone mad!
Have you noticed that they never actually ban the production of these things that are so bad for us all. Cigarettes, booze, gas-guzzling cars. Couldn’t possibly do that, could they, there is too much money to be made in the form of tax. They tell us all of these things are bad for us, but its our government who is benefitting from our ‘bad habits’. Too many do-gooders lacking common sense who must be so bored in their own lives that their only form of pleasure is to take away everyone elses pleasures in life.

I completeley agree with all the above, especially the immigration part hence I now live in OZ. No bloody do-gooders here Mate! I Had enough of the UK 2 1/2 years ago, with its nanny state bloody politically correct crap so packed up and left. It’s very nice down here with true freedom of speech and not living how someone elses says I have to ! G’Day

Have you ever noticed how quiet do-gooders and the ban it brigade are? They never admit to it in front of your face. They are a faceless and gutless bunch.

In some respects, I agree with the above letter, however, I’m a little unsure about the “law abiding majority” bit. Are you referring just to motorists, or society in general?
If it is motorists, then I would challenge the “law abiding majority” sentiment as I see everyday people driving with impunity, whether it be speeding or using a mobile phone, to name a just a few illegal actions. I’d say a lot if it is down to sheer luck that there are not more accidents on our roads rather than Britain having safe drivers.
Besides, is it really essential that you have to drink - even one pint - and drive at all?

If the do-gooders are really serious about reducing the statistics for road deaths they would much better results if they legislated to keep all drivers off the road that hadn’t been drinking.

Maybe instead of shooting down this new legislation, maybe we should all be thinking that this is a good idea! If i had the choice i would ban driving after alcohol!

Ozpat.. You are a lucky man, agree with everything you say….

Don’t you think that reducing the drink drive limit is pointless. The people who don’t take any notice of it now won’t take any notice of it when its reduced…

JT - spot on. Ozpat - I’m with you (in the US though). I just read about some guy in Cumbria who now has a criminal record after being fined because his wheelie-bin lid was open by four inches when it came to collection time. The local council even went to the trouble, and cost no doubt, to photograph the “scene of the crime”. To think that someone is being paid to think up these rules and make the decision to persec…er, prosecute etc. How do they get these jobs and what makes them think they’re contributing to the well-being of society? There seem to be a lot of inadequately supervised egos out there and until someone with some common sense and a degree of conviction emerges to shout down the PC brigade, we’ll continue to have these “you are joking!” kind of stories.

Well said, Steve!

Why is ‘do-gooder’ a term of abuse? Do we prefer ‘do-badders’? Actually, this may shock some people, but drinking alcohol isn’t compulsory.

Doogooders are a group o people who want to make the world a better place in their image only. They would ban anything they don’t like or agree with and not give a toss what anyone thought!

You don’t realise it’s the freedom to choose that’s at stake. My Mother, who is in her 60’s, totally spat her dummy out a few years ago about some new gun or knife law, I can’t remember which. She doesn’t like the nanny state making decisions on our behalf that we are more than capable of making for ourselves. She doesn’t want to carry a knife and those that do don’t give a rats ass about the law, so it’s pointless! Although it does amuse me the image of all those oaps armed up to the hilt!
