Campaigners furious at multi-million proposals for thousands of new homes near Walsall town centre have delivered a vote of no confidence in the council’s handling of the project.
The move followed the failure of property consultants to attend a meeting last night with a revised submission after worried residents criticised the lack of extra school and health facilities in the plans to develop numerous plots in Birchills.
Birchills Agenda 21 group chairman Chris Jones said 50 residents were left disappointed after the consultants from GVA Grimley failed to turn up.
Today Walsall Council’s assistant director for regeneration Michael Tichford apologised for the no show and said there had been a “misunderstanding”.
He said amended plans would be presented in May by Grimley.
Mr Jones said the mood of the meeting worsened after a letter from Walsall Council’s chief executive Paul Sheenan stated Reedswood Golf Course was not exempt from development. The group claims under an agreement made 15 years ago the derelict green in Rayboulds Bridge Road, off the A34 Green Lane, must be retained as open space.
“We were wrong to trust the council then and we don’t trust them now,” said Mr Jones.
