Rush-hour motorists were stuck in queues after a crash closed the M5 and three cars collided with a bus in Wolverhampton city centre.
Tailbacks stretched up to four miles long after the crash between a car and a van on the southbound carriageway of the M5 between Junction 1 for West Bromwich and Junction 2 for Oldbury. There were knock-on problems on the M6.
The accident happened at 8.40am and the M5 was closed for 15 minutes from 9.20am to allow the air ambulance to land.
Drivers trying to get into Wolverhampton faced a quarter-of-a-mile queues in all directions after three cars collided with a double decker National Express bus on the busy Chapel Ash island.
Ring Road St Andrew’s had to be closed as far as Waterloo Road after the crash just before 8am.
Cars were backed up all the way from Chapel Ash to the Penn Road.
One woman had suspected whiplash injuries.
