Mick McCarthy has moved to allay fears Jay Bothroyd could play against Wolves in the play-offs.
Fans feared the striker, currently on loan at promotion-chasing rivals Stoke, may be allowed to play against his parent club if they meet in the end of season showpiece.
But manager McCarthy laughed off any prospect of that scenario happening.
Bothroyd’s initial spell at the Britannia Stadium is due to expire on Friday, although Stoke have the option of extending it to 93 days.
“If Stoke end up in the play-offs and we played them it’s quite clear he wouldn’t be playing,” said McCarthy.”He’s on loan at Stoke but it’s indefinite - he’s gone for a month with the option of extending it because it was an emergency loan, so it can be for up to 93 days, which would cover the rest of the season.
“It depends on how Tony (Pulis) views it. We’ve got 24-hour recall on any loan player who leaves here after the first 28 days.”
Stoke remained second in the Championship despite last night’s surprise 2-1 home defeat by Crystal Palace, a result which saw the Eagles leapfrog Wolves into the top six by a point.
But McCarthy’s men have two games in hand on both sides, and trail Stoke by eight points.
Bothroyd came on as a 77th minute substitute for Stephen Pearson with Stoke 2-0 down, but athough Glenn Whelan reduced the arrears with five minutes left, the Potteries side couldn’t rescue a point.
The 25-year-old forward moved to Stoke on March 14 and has made four appearances for Tony Pulis’s side, but only one start and has so far failed to score.
Wolves reserve Elliott Bennett has had his loan to League Two club Bury extended for another three weeks.
Meanwhile, Kyle Bennett has been called up into the England under-18 squad for the friendly against Austria next week. The game is e a week tomorrow at Hartlepool FC.
Kyle said: “I was totally surprised when I heard the news, it was a tremendous thrill.
“I was on standby for the England under 16s 18 months ago, but this is the first time I’ve been actually named in a squad.
“There is no bigger honour than playing for your country.”

Let him play. I am certain his consistancy in front of goal of NOT scoring & laziness on the pitch will shine through!
what ya worried about that for, anyway you wont make the play offs boing boing stayin in the championship u r
STRIKER? remind me agen, how many as he scored boing boing
Shame, I wouldn’t mind him playing. Don’t think he’d do a lot anyway.
OH NO! Please let him play! Since hes been at Stoke, they havnt managed a decent performance or win!
Masterstroke by Mick McCarthy who knows what Bothroyd is really like and how he may destabilise the team.
Let him play, whats he gonna do?
Miss a few sitters?
Thats a shame.
If he did play that would mean Wolves would be playing against ten and not eleven Stoke players!!
We wouldn’t even know he was there until he got substituted.
Lets wait and see re:PLAY OFFS-why not let jay play?It maybe a good idea to let him play against us!!If you get my drift.
Get him back to rot in our reserves
i would let him play if we ended up in play-offs and playing each other, aint like is movement is fantastic, our centre-halves would possibly have their easiest game of the season!
“fans” soon forget that goal against the checkout girls at molineux last season. it baffles me why we get so many tesco bags on our blogs. i don’t even know where their’s are. i guess its a real thrill to be able to post jibes & thicko attempts at “humour” on our sites, if you are some sort of inadequate loser?
5. seems weird how we let him go, our performances pick up and stokes where he ends up at drop. perhaps he was huge pain in the a$$ and mick finally dealt with it!
I’d prefer him not to play by a long shot… he was lazy and inconsistent… but that left foot, i’d be nervous everytime he tried one from 20yrds as we’ve all seen what it can do!
Oh, Terrywantonbaggie, I do recall him score a goal at Molineux… the winner against some blue + white rivals if memory serves me correct
Is this terrywantonbaggie the same person as terrywembleybaggie, terrywalsallbaggie and terryproudbaggie?
If so, he might have a new name at the end of the season terrywemessedupintheplayoffsagainbaggie!
I don’t think Stoke want to extend his loan after Friday. Problem solved.
A conflict of interest would prevent him from playing
terrywantonbudgie, last week all we got out of you was were going to win the cup now its back to dreary attempts at humour. 1st team to lose twice at new wembley ha ha ha now thats a joke
I’d worry about making the playoffs first!!!
Boing Boing
Remember what he did against Charlton at home, best game of his career. And Terrywhateverbaggie, who was it who scored our winner against yu last season? Please remind me idiot
11) Check how many of your lot on our blogs before making that sort of comment.
Terrymoaningpompusboggie you moan about us on your board GET OFF OURS WOLVES FOR EVER
Would like to know where all those folks are now that were berating MM at the time he farmed Bothroyd out on loan… I think his goalscoring record at Stoke speaks for itself. ‘One bad apple’ and all that. Hope he never plays in a Wolves shirt again - his laziness would make Nathan Blake and Robert Taylor look lively!
i am a bit of a plank heheheh boing boing
I don’t think it’s any coincidence that Wolves form and team spirit have improved since Bothroyd left. I hope they extend his loan and if he played against the Wolves I would be delighted.
3. I think I recall him scoring the winner against you last season..
my god, Terry Baggies is an un-employable litte wretch of a man who is in his 50’s, has no friends, social life are sex life and his only joy is to come onto this messageboard and taken on all these aliases….
Terry please has some dignity and dont be a plank. I can give some advice if you like, why dont you log off your computer, jump in the bath and have a wash, then pop some clothes on and have a walk to your local pastry shop and buy your a pie. Come home with it and have a conversation with it, you might feel alot better if you did because its the level of intelligence you are accumstomed to.
Goodbye!
Terry your representing your fans in the exact way we’d expect. Keep up the good work.
Dont Knock Nathan Blake remember the play off final. That team/players are legends forever.Just like any wolves player that scores against the Baggies inc Boothroyd.
pye green wolf .get out of pye green ,theres only room for one of us here.
Off topic. I have lived outside the UK for many years, an honest question…
Why do most Albion posters, continually end their, usual, inane drivel with ‘boing boing’. Is that the name of the Special school, youth club, they all attend or are they all fans of Zebberdy, from magic roundabout.
It does seem very childish.
I’d just like to say to you Albion fans who have commented above, I’ve never even looked at any news about your club…..
Thanks for your interest though.
boy MM is something else.. isn’t there an enormous IF we get to the playoffs here?
I don’t think MM has to think about Jay meeting us, unless its a pie and a pint one day!
But still, he is one of those, a little bit of magic that he may decide to conjure up…
Let him play, Stoke, 1 win in 8 - when did he join them?
baggie fans go and cry !!
17-pye green wolf
i think you may be wrong about albion being the first team to lose at wembley twice….it was actually the English national team, against Germany and Croatia…correct me if i am wrong, but i dont think i am
26 stardwilf, and i just think your lovely, its nice to know you waited till id gone to blackpool when you put your post on,knowing that i wasent here to reply, cowards id call ya, boing boing we are top of the league
