Captain Gareth Barry has backed Gabriel Agbonlahor to go on an end of season goals spree to keep Villa’s Euro challenge alive.
Agbonlahor scored for the first time in 12 games and grabbed his first of 2008 in Saturday’s 4-0 win over Bolton.
It was the young striker’s eighth goal of the season – putting his two behind last season’s topscoring tally – but only his second in 20 games after opening with seven in his first 15.
Barry said: “Gabby was delighted to finish it off because it’s been playing on his mind that he hadn’t scored for a while.
“People have been reminding him about that, but now he’s scored he’ll probably get three or four more before the end of the season.
“It was a very good team goal, too. It started in our own half and there were a couple of one-touch passes.”
Agbonlahor revealed he was determined to get on the end of Barry’s cross.
“Gareth broke down the left so I just knew I had to get myself in the box to get on the end of it,” he said.
“It was a good cross and I just wanted to make the right contact and flick it into the corner.
“Gareth took his header well and his second took a deflection, but he’ll probably tell you it was going in anyway!”
“It was a good day all round. We’ve had a few bad results lately and we just wanted to put that right with a result against Bolton.
“The early goal was important and gave us the confidence we needed to go on and win it.”
